Windows Server 2012 - and /rpc

$

Hi all,

I have the following question:

Seems like if a client is Windows 8 and a server is Windows Server 2012 and RDGateway is used then traffic goes through HTTPS port (443) sharing it with HTTP. Before, in Windows Server 2008 traffic also went through this port but it was available for IIS i.e. RPC over HTTPs was used. However, with the latest version IIS does not get the traffic at all.

So, is it possible to force the traffic to flow through IIS (/rpc) site in (Windows Server 2012 + Windows 8 environment)

Thx in advance

I want to decomission a domain controller with Windows 2003 Terminal Licensing Server installed to a member server.  Will this affect the Terminal Licensing Server?  I need it to function the way it is now.

Server 2012 printing with RDP clients.

I have built a Windows Server 2012 system on a virtual server. The Host Os is Centos 6, update 4 64 bit.
I've put together firewall rules that forward port 389 on the host system to the guest.
Inbound users are all RDP and they get in, log in, and run applications with no difficulties.
I've followed guidelines for setting up print drivers. The RDP client permits printer sharing and works and prints well with an old Server 2003 box.
Every time I try and print test to a local printer using RDP a dialog comes up. "The printer <fill in name of queue here> is in an error state" The print job itself just sits in the queue never moving.
I've followed correct windows procedures for setting up print queues. I set them up using driver software for the client OS and the queues, look good and show up on the RDP sessions as available printers.
As A Unix gearhead, I believe the firewall is NOT the problem. In similar setups all I've needed to do to get printing work is forward port 389 to the windows box.
I'm wondering if there is some kind of setup wizard I need to run to enable printing to get back to the RDP clients local printer.

Cannot connect to Virtual Desktops in unmanaged pool

Hi there,
for testing purposes we recently configured RemoteDesktopServices on Windows Server 2012.
We installed:

- 1 RD-Gateway-Server,
- 1 Lizencing-Server,
- 1 Virtualization-Host and
- 1 RD-ConnectionBroker that is also hosting the RD-WebAccess-role.

In the next step we set up 2 syspreped VD "Gold-Images", one with Windows 7 x64 SP1, one with Windows 8 x64, created two managed collections with 5 VMs in each an connected to both collections using RD-WebAccess successfully.

Next we successfully created an "unmanaged collection" containing 5 identically configured VMs with Windows 8 x64, butcould not connect to this Virtual Desktops using RD-WebAccess.
(To create these "unmanaged" VMs we uses the product "vDesktops" from QUEST-Software, which we successfully used to create unmanaged pools on Windows Server 2008R2 RDS-ConnectionBroker/WebAccess without any connection problems).

The Events logged on RD-ConnectionBroker 2012 are the following:
In TS-SessionBroker Operational: 800 (OK) but then 819 (instead of 801 - 787 - 818)
In TS-SessionBroker Admin: 802
In TS-SessionBroker-Client Operational: 1301 (OK) but then 1296 and1306 (instead of 1307)

Has anyone any solution to this Problem?

Thanks in advance, Peter

We have a central server we use to remote into all of our server externally. This server is running server 2003 SP2. But it is unable to remote into any of our new servers running Server 2012. Does anyone know how to fix this at all?

Thanks,

How to allow users to acces RDS internally, but not externally

Hello,

Currently we have set up an RDS 2012 Infrastructure where it is accesible either internally and externally.

The thing is that, for a particular set of users, we need them to access RDS internally, but we can't allow them to access it externally.

Is there a way to achieve this?

Thanks.

Remote Desktop to Windows 2012 fails to connect with black screen

I have a significant number of my new installations of Windows 2012 that I cannot access through RDP.

All of these servers exhibit the same symptoms.

I use the RDP client to connect to the server and after a moment I am asked form my credentials.  After entering them successfully I get a black screen window in which I expect the desktop to initialize.  It simply stays there for more than 20 seconds (I think much longer) and then disconnects.

Every time that happens I get an event ID Winlogon 4005.  I am also receiving but not all the time event ID 6000 and 6003 referring to being unable to handle critical or normal events from AUinstallAgent.

I am not having any luck finding any cause.  This happens on one of my new HP Bladeservers and on several Hyper-V guests running under 2K8R2.  One of this has had nothing more than my antivirus (McAfee epo and virusscan 8.8) installed and already has this issue.  Yet I have others that have NOT experienced this issue.  On the one that works, it still gets the 6000 and 6003 errors.

Of three brand new installed windows 2012 servers on my hyper-v cluster, two of them exhibit this behavior and one does not.  All three of these have the exact same minimally installed software.

Your desktop Services Session has ended - possibly due to network connectivity problems

Hello,

I'm trying to connect from a workstation in China running Windows 7 with all the updates to a 2012 server in Arizona that has all the latest updates.    The RD client is 6.2.9200.
They are trying to connect at 1024 by 16 bit color, no sound redirect, only clipboard for local resources, experience set for 56kbps, reconnect if connection is dropped.

They attempt to login and during the welcome screen with remote it will say

Your remote desktop services session has ended.

The connection to the remote computer was lost, possibly due to network connectivity problems.    Try connecting to the remote computer again.   If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support.

If that same computer attempts to connect to a number of 2008 R2 servers in Arizona on the same network switch - they can connect without issue.   This only occurs connecting to 2012 servers.   I can log in as that same user from another workstation anywhere in the US and RD works fine.   I've tried from an XP machine with the latest RD client, a Windows 7 PC and Windows 2008 R2 all running the latest client and they all have the same issue from our China office but only to 2012 RD servers, not to 2008 RD servers on the same subnet.

I can remote to it from other places within the US, but it seems very sensitive and only works 20% of the time when connecting from computers in China - sometimes they work the next day the same computer may not. We have about a 2mbit throughput between locations when copying files. The latency is high but it is in China so I'm not expecting instantaneous connectivity.    Our connection to the US is as optimized by China Telecom as we can get for routing.

Remote desktop services User CALS

Hi, I have a question about RDS User CALs. If we setup a licensing server with 20 user CALS. Does that mean that this will work for al the servers in our environment or do we need some extra RDS licenses per server?

Also, do you have to define each server where you want to logon with more then 2 users at once after installing the RDS User CALs?

%homeshare% variable not defined on 2008 R2 RDS

I have 4 2008 R2 RDS servers.  2 of these servers correctly set the %homeshare% variable to what is defined in the user properties in AD.  Two of them however do not even set the variable.  When I look in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Volatile Environment, there isn't even a string value defined as HOMESHARE, where in the registry of the two that work properly the value of HOMEPATH is set to\\fileserver\usershare\username.  What would cause these two servers not define %homeshare%?  Thanks

Slow login with RDWeb applications and RemoteApps

$

Hello,

I'm having a problem with a newly created 2008 R2 RDS Farm. Full desktop logins are fast for remote users (under 10 seconds), but RemoteApps and RDWeb apps take about 30 seconds to load (once loaded, subsequent apps load in 2-3 seconds). The details button is greyed out for about 25 seconds while waiting for the app to load and then when it is finally becomes enabled, the app loads in about 3 seconds.

The RDS setup consists of:

1 Gateway server
1 Connection Broker/License server
2 Session Host/RDWeb servers

I have tried the following:

-Unchecking "Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses" under the session host settings in RemoteApps manager on both session host servers
-Disabling UAC on all servers (oddly enough this seemed to increase the login time)
-Disabling client device redirection

Nothing has improved the speed. Any other suggestions? Thanks

unable to launch resource 0x800705b4

This use to work just hours ago but now, when using the web feed, you get:

unable to launch resource 0x800705b4

And when trying to access rdweb, the browser just times out. I have restarted the server. I also can launch the resources from the server desktop so all the programs are working. I haven't done any updates lately to this server. I have updated the resource connection and removed and recreated the resource (it publishes the resources fine just can not open them). Any ideas?

Server 2012 RDS - Will this work?

$

Hello, I am new to RDS (TS) and I was wondering if this proposed scenario was viable,( in the sense that the performance would be acceptable).

Max of 25 users (on thin clients) connecting simultaneously to a RDS server with:

32 GB RAM

E5-2407 CPU

2 RAID 1- 10K SAS drives

Gigabit Network  (Assuming a 100 Mbps connection be a bottleneck)

Running Server 2012 Standard as the OS

Running these apps:

Internet browsing

Email

MS Office 2010

Extra info:

I am planning to PXE boot the thin clients (they are diskless) with a Linux distro like Thinstation to establish a session with the RDS server.

Remote Desktop - IDLE Timeout Disconnect - CHANGE LENGTH OF IDLE TIME

$

When I connect to a server running Windows Server 2003 via RDP, the connection is disconnected after 15 minutes of idle timeout.

I want to lengthen the amount of idle time before a RDP session is disconnected.

Where can I change that value?

I have seen references to running gpedit.msc, and then "In Computer Configuration,Administrative Templates, Windows Components,Terminal Services, Sessions, enable the settings you want to configure."

Sounds nice, in theory, except that I HAVE NO "Terminal Services" line item in this location. Under Windows Components, I have "Event Forwarding, Windows Remote Management, Windows Remote Shell, Windows Media Player, Windows Update".

I would appreciate commentary from someone who understands the question I am asking. If you don't understand my question, then please don't respond with more questions.

Unable to start a DCOM Server

Hello

Very often when our users want to open an Office document in SAP GUI, the document does not show up and they receive an information, that no document has been opened. After this they have to shutdown and restart SAP GUI.

At the same time the following error message is logged in the system log:

Unable to start a DCOM Server: {00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}. The error:
"1260"
Happened while starting this command:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE" -Embedding

This happens on Remote Desktop enabled Servers 2008 R2 with all patches and Citrix XenApp 6.0 installed. I can confirm, that our systems are not short of any resources and that the users have the current Citrix client software installed. Unfortunately I did not find an other reason for this problem on the web.

Any help is necessary as soon as possible, because our users are very short of time.

Thanks in advance

Our custom application with handwriting is very choppy over RDS RemoteApp

$

Hi,

I'm using Windows Server 2008 with Remote Desktop Services to publish an application using RemoteApp. I create an RDP file for the App and distribute that to my users.

We have our own custom app. This app is designed for a tablet so the input method is a stylus on any tablet running windows OS.

The hand writing is very blocky and choppy. anyone who writes quickly, loses pieces of the stroke.

The application is using the Microsoft Ink framework.

Its like the refresh rate is not fast enough to keep up with the ink strokes of hand writing.

Does anyone know of any other tweaks I can make to the RDP session to improve performance with the hand writing?

From the parameters below, I do need bidirectional audio and to share the local drives. I'm not sure there are any other parameters that can help this situation.

I have Allow font smoothing off.

I have Smart Cards off because we do not use them.

I have the color at the lowest of High Color(15bit).

WIndows 2012 RDS Connection Broker setup

$

Here is the current scenario:

I have 1  active Windows 2012 RDS server running sessions.

I want to add a second Windows 2012 RDS server.

I want to add a 3rd Windows 2012 server that will be the Connection Broker  server.

I want to add both RDS servers to the Connection Broker server.

I do not need HA now.

Does the connection broker service need to be installed on all RDS servers or just the Connection Broker server that will be doing the load balancing?

How to I configure the two RDS servers to be part of the farm?

How do I configure the clients to connect to the broker?

I cannot find any documentation on how to configure this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Off to the lab to try it out.
