How do I create a test user who will log on with a temporary profile?
We want to show others how to fix a profile when an RD user with a roaming profile and folder redirection is logged on with a temporary profile: delete the SID.bak registry key from the ProfileList. I figure full hands on is the best way for the training to take, since this isn't a problem we see every day, but often enough that we want to be able to show the problem and the fix.
So I created a test user, logged on as the test user, and logged off (I did not just disconnect). Then I logged on as admin, and added .bak to the test user's registry key. When I log in again as the test user, it's still normal. I gather there is more to this than meets the eye; that when there is no registry key, other housekeeping resets something perhaps?
I have not seen how to do this properly.
What is best practice.
*EDIT*
This is in Server 2012
When I allocate a RemoteFX virtual display adapter to virtual machine, the screen resolution that I can select is 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 or 1920x1200. all these resolutions are in scale of 4:3, however, all our displayers are in scale of 16:9.
So, the problem is, How can I make the thin clients work in full screen mode by RDP to the virtual machines? as you know, the resolution should be 1280x720,1366x768,1920×1080,etc. which is not support by RemoteFX default.
Hi all,
We've implemented a windows server 2012 as domain controller. For some reason, we install the Remote Desktop service on this DC. The RDS service: gateway, license can install without any error; however, we cannot install the Remote Desktop Connection Broker, every time we install this role, the error message display: The request to add or remove feature on the specified server failed. Then we try to install the Windows Internal Database first (required when install Remote Desktop Connection Broker), but the error also same. After I do the research, add the accounts IIS_IUSRS, NETWORK, NETWORK SERVICE, SERVICE to the Log on as a service policy, but still cannot install. And we check on the Event Log, the error message as:

Dear Sir,<o:p></o:p>
We would create a RDS Servers in 2 sites (US and HK) and point those servers to one RDS Licensing server in US. <o:p></o:p>
For example: If we would get 20 open licenses of RDS users CALs for users in different overseas offices, should we only get it in US? or we have to get a duplicated set of license in HK even our RDS Licensing server is located in US?
<o:p></o:p>
Besides, Should the RDS User CALs be purchased on the same country of the licensing server location right? If we would setup a RDS Licensing Server in HK for backup purpose, should we need to get a same set of license in HK? Or we can reuse the license we purchased in US?<o:p></o:p>
Many thanks in advance<o:p></o:p>
I've got a single server running 2008 R2 Standard, with Remote Desktop Services installed (no active directory installed). We are a small company so I don't have a lot of help in getting all this up and running. So right now I do a bare metal backup each night (actually around 1 am) to an external hard drive and in the case were the server dies, I get another server, and using the bare metal backup and my Server 2008 R2 DVD, restore the image. My question is: Is this the best way to do this? Is there a better way? Is the bare metal I run each night just copying the difference from the night before or is it completely replacing the whole image each night? Should I create a single "master" bare metal backup once and then do another kind of backup to make things quicker?
Thanks
Kevin
Hello, I am new to RDS (TS) and I was wondering if this proposed scenario was viable,( in the sense that the performance would be acceptable).
Max of 25 users (on thin clients) connecting simultaneously to a RDS server with:
32 GB RAM
E5-2407 CPU
2 RAID 1- 10K SAS drives
Gigabit Network (Assuming a 100 Mbps connection be a bottleneck)
Running Server 2012 Standard as the OS
Running these apps:
Internet browsing
MS Office 2010
Extra info:
I am planning to PXE boot the thin clients (they are diskless) with a Linux distro like Thinstation to establish a session with the RDS server.
Hi
We have several vlans in hour Company, and we have not yet determined where to install all the terminal server hosts. If we install a Broker and the terminal server host on the same vlan. Is it possible to move the broker to another Vlan an leave the terminal server hosts ? (The Vlan is secured)
We have been getting this error at about the same time for 2 days now:
Event Type: Error

Description:
General database error occurred, Can't open ESE database file C:\WINNT\System32\LServer\TLSLic.edb - error -550 JET_errDatabaseInconsistent, Database is in inconsistent state.
.
I was able to get an older version of TLSLIC.EDB from the LServer\Export directory and restart the TS Licensing service each time, but we seem to be running out of available licenses (we have more than enough licenses to make us legal).
My concern is that if we reboot the server, all of the thin clients will try to access licenses that are already allocated and noone will be able to connect. I am hoping someone out there knows how to get us connected until the new server is on line.
The real problem is the Microsoft can (or won't) activate server 2000 licenses - They insist the only option is to upgrade the server.
This is a production server and we can not take it down for an upgrade, and we have consultants working on a server 2012/2008 solution but are a few weeks from putting that into service.

Fighting this one for a few weeks. Google only answers for 2008r2. Microsoft search never helps, but I digress.
Turned every knob in the group policy for remote printing, made sure all o/s's patched and up to date. Even xp has all required patches.
I can print through the the Easy Print driver on some occasions to each of the above versions of windows. But then it just stops working. At first we thought restarting the workstation reset something, then we thought restarting the server was fixing something, but now I think we are missing something critical. Maybe we are missing 2012r2 (or 2014).
Does anyone have a good experience with 2012 rds, remoteaps and printers?
We were even hoping to connect a debit card machine to the serial/usb port of a remote destop and see it in remoteapp, but that may need a third-party solution.
Thanks,
Gerald.

Hello,
I have installed RDS within Windows 2012. I have installed the license manager locally on the server (Installed RDS Per User Cal) and have successfully activated the license server. However , I am unable to configure Remote Desktop services to utilize the license server residing locally on the server. For some unexplained reason, I am unable to install the Connection Broker (fails about 50% of the way during the install) and have spent a considerable amount of time attempting to locate a doc that outlines the procedures for successfully configure RD services to utilize the locally configured license server. The doc referenced below looked promising. Unfortunately, the command on Step 4 errors out when I attempt to enter the command as directed.
"Guidelines for installing the Remote Desktop Session Host role service on a computer running Windows Server 2012 without the Remote Desktop Connection Broker role service"
4. Run the following command to replace the machine name with License Server:
$obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList("LicServer")
Any help/guidance would be appreciated.
Hi
I noticed the other day we have had a few crashes since the 29th of May at various, random (so it seems) times on differing servers. We have a 6 server farm (Virtualised) and each of the servers have crashed at some point, some more than others. Typically it will happen twice or 3 times on the one day (as if the one user is trying the same thing over and over) and then not again for days or weeks.
Just prior to May 29th we did have some new MFD's rollout with new drivers and I'm thinking it could be the issue. I have had a look at the mini dump files and they all come back with win32k as the module but the process name is either winword.exe, excel.exe or powerpnt.exe.
I can upload the dumps somewhere if someone could take a look or have a look at the one inserted below.
Any further info required, just let me know. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Setup:
2 x 2012 Datacenter Hyper V Virtual Hosts
2 x 2012 Standard RDS Connection Broker Virtual
2 x 2012 Standard RDS Web Access Virtual
4 x 2012 Standard RDS Session Host Virtual
1 x 2008 R2 Enterprise SQL Server 2008 R2 - virtual
All setup on the same network subnet (/24).
2 x Windows 8 desktops for testing Web Access and SSO - Virtual
2012 domain/forest current functional level – came from a 2000 domain initially
Functional:
Prior to configuring the connections brokers in HA mode, the RDS environment works very well. I have SSO functioning so that our users do not need to enter credentials. This was a key factor in our deployment.
Also functional is allowing the single connection broker to be in HA mode. SSO works perfectly, no prompts for security.
Non-Functional:
After adding CB2 & the required DNS records, windows security prompts would show for 1 connection broker, but not for the other. I would switch from CB to CB by flushing dns. I would also pause CB2 by using hyper v and not receive security prompts. Un-pause CB2, pause cb1, and the security prompts would happen every time.
Things that I have tried in order:
Scenario 1(functional)
Scenario 2(nonfunctional)
Scenario 3(nonfunctional)
Summary:
Immediately after adding another connection broker server to the deployment and setting another DNS resource record to HARDCB.domain.local, I began to notice random windows security prompts. What I found is that after doing a flushdns from cmd that the windows security prompt would show every time. Then again, another flushdns and the applications, like calculator, show up perfectly. I would then log off the test user from server managers remote connections on the RDS session host server. Another flushdns, and the windows security prompts would show each and every time. Now, if I were to put the credentials for the test user in, the application would successfully launch. If I did not put the credentials in and hit cancel, nothing would happen. The user would not login. I have 3 test users, and several other IT personnel trying this, all with the same results.
When I realized that it was just one server doing this, I decided to flatten and reload. So I removed the connection broker from the RDS deployment. Created a new virtual machine and added the newly created virtual to the RDS connection brokers HA. Same issue.
Thanks for any help given !
I have configured my server 2008 r2 box with AD and Dns etc to enable rd web access and remote app running.
My users can login to the RD Web access screen through IE using the credentials I gave them in AD but when the select the app and connect they get 'The remote computer could not be found. please contact your helpdesk about this error.'
what I find really strange is I have 3 other box's the exact same that all offer different apps to users but this one will not play ball. I also have ports 88, 135, 139, 389, 445, 464 and 593 disabled to give a clearer picture
Thanks again
I've successfully backed up my virtual machines and test restore them using Windows Server Backup. However, I'm a little confused as to what to do about the VDI machines.. I have set up two personal VDI virtual machines that the two users save information to.
I can see these RDP-0 and RDP-1 in the list of machines to be backed up in Windows Server Backup, and I can select them to be backed up with the other virtual machines. But I'm a bit confused as to what I should do when I restore them.. After a system fail, when you have reinstall the host and Hyper-V, can I import these when I'm re-setting up VDI on the host?
Hi,
Can some please recommend a cost effective Antivirus solution for a 5 user license Remote Desktop Services Server?
Something simple to deploy and for a single server running Server 2008 R2.
Thanks.
Hi, I have a terminal server accessed by many users. Some users need to have access to more than one connection and some users should not have more than one connection at the same time, for example:
- user A need to be allowed to have 2 connections
- user B cannot have more that 1 connection.
Is there a way I can do it?
Thanks
