MUltiple Remove Desktop Connections, what's the best cost-benefit option?

Hi All

We are looking to allow our remote employees to access data on our Server. This Server should allow multiple remote desktop logins, currently we need 15.

*Note, that this server is just a software repository, and we are not willing to have this server managing the Internal Network such as having Activity Directory or any other service.

What is the best option in terms of Operational System and Licensing?

Un Revoke a Revoked RDS Device Cal

I am an IT contractor whose company policy is to revoke Remote Desktop Device Cals for Execs when they leave our org.  As it turns out the information was wrong (an off the cuff comment) and the exec is still with the company, and now I need to figure out to un revoke his Device Cal so that he can connect with his laptop.  How do I do this

Hi All.

I've been roaming the net for an answer for this, but I've come up short. :(

What it the recommended/required CPU and RAM for:

session based users?

pooled machine based users?

personal machine based users?

And why did the fontsize change?? :)

The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship

This problems exists in the below Environment

ForestA, has been around awhile, has one domain Called DomainQ

ForestC, is new, has one domain called DomainR

ForestC has a one way transitive trust to ForestA and shares a namespace. Dns connectivity is in place, NTP is working correctly where ForestC pulls its time from ForestA and users in ForestA have been permissioned on devices in ForestC.

Below is the netlogon dump and log files that look relevant, it's odd because I get a successfully logged on message but the users is prompted with "The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship" and when the click on they are back at the logon prompt. Nothing related to that error message that I have tried has helped.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee849847%28WS.10%29.aspx

The above was not any help as this is a one way transitive forest trust so the trust level is already 2.

"Remember my credentials" in Internet Explorer doesn't remember the password

$

Hello,

I've been wondering why Internet Explorer won't remember any password in a Server 2012 Session Host.  Here's our situation: all Windows Servers 2012, all servers joined to a AD domain;  the servers are RD Session Host, RD Connection Broker and RD Web Access.   We have User Profile Disk enabled.

The first time a user logs on to a remote session and access our internal Sharepoint portal, IE will always ask for a username and password. The user enters the domain credentials, checks the option "remember my credentials" and everything goes fine for a while.   When he closes IE and re-opens it,  it will ask for the password again.    It's like the option "remember my credentials" wouldn't be working.  This problem doesn't happen with a regular physical PC.  Whatsmore, if the user logs out of the remote session, and logs in again, IE will ask again for BOTH username and password.   This is not a single Sharepoint problem, it happens with all Web applications that use AD authentication.

Could this problem be related with the use of User Profile Disk?  Since this is enabled, maybe IE doesn't know where to store the saved credentials.

Please, any help will be greatly appreciatted.

Hello,

I encounter an error message on 2008 R2 servers and i don't find the source .

We have 3 RDS servers, and 1 print server.

The 3 RDS servers encounter this error message :

Detection of interactive services
The program may need information or permission to complete a task

One or more programs or devices require your attention:
Title of the message: C: \ Windows \ System32 \ spoolsv.exe
Path to the program: C: \ Windows \ System32 \ spoolsv.exe
Received: July 15, 2013 Yesterday 14:52:50

This problem occurs when a program is not fully compatible with Windows.

This message comes up regularly.
I searched in windows logs but i find nothing ... anyone has already encountered and solved this?

Thank you by advance,

Setnnnn.tmp files accumulating in System32 folder

$

Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1; Citrix Xenapp 6

Files with names in the form SETnnnn.tmp are accumulating every day on Citrix farm servers in the C:\Windows\System32 directory. The nnnn is a 4-digit hex number in the name of each file. (such as SETB14A.tmp or SET1A02.tmp)

Each file has the same date (2/25/2009 7:01 PM) and size (497 KB). The files are owned by SYSTEM.  Opened a couple of them with Wordpad and I can make out the filename of DIFxAPI.

These farm servers have been online about 6 months, with SP1 installed about 2 months ago. The first time I found them each server had about 15,000 of these .tmp files. At night, with users sessions logged off, I deleted these. Next day, a couple of hundred more were created.

Since these files are only accumulating on these servers and no others with Windows 2008 R2 SP1, it’s pretty clear that it’s related to sessions. In searching on this, I’ve seen others mention these files but no specific reason as to why they are created or why they aren’t being deleted automatically. But this would seem to indicate that it’s related somehow to Terminal Services rather than Citrix software.

Does anyone have any information as to why these tmp files are created in the System32 folder and why they aren’t being deleted automatically when the process finishes?

TIA

Rick

COM port redirection

Hi,

I have a huge problem connecting serial devices to the Windows server 2008R2, through RDC. Two servers running, one does enable us to redirect local serial ports (COM) to the server, the other doesn't. All settings are the same (Local Resources, Ports checked), also security settings are the same (user groups have same permissions).
Does anybody have a clue, what to review? Anybody knows, what is causing this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Miha

Audio redirection randomly stops working on RDS servers

$

Hi - we have 3 RDS/Terminal Servers (Windows 2008 R2) configured for RemoteApp publishing and setup in a server farm via the RDS Connection Broker. All servers are connection load-balanced equally on the Connection Broker.

Everything works fine EXCEPT... the RDS servers just randomly lose their audio redirection functionality and users stop getting audio on their applications.

The only workaround solution we've found to restore the RDS audio redirection is to reboot the server (restarting the Windows Audio and/or Audio Endpoint services doesn't fix).

Issue is random and doesn't always effect the same RDS server... so for example audio will be working fine on all servers and then just stop working on server 1, we reboot server 1 and then later or the next day audio stops working on server 3... and so on.

I was hoping this MS hotfix KB2538047 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2538047/en-us - would have been the fix but it didn't make any difference - issue still happens.

The only audio related event I can see in the logs is a System log event 7011 - "timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AudioEndpointBuilder service."

Has anyone else experienced this same issue or does anyone have any troubleshooting advice? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Error Copying Large File or Folder via clipboard with Remote Desktop Session

I have noticed that Server 2012 has a bug where copying large files via clipboard between Remote Desktop sessions/and from local computer to Remote computer fails:

Anything over a few gig and I get an "Error Copying File or Folder." I have been able to recreate this consistently on multiple server 2012 standard installations including freshly spawned virtual machines with no custom config. I have been getting around this issue by opening up windows firewall and using UNC paths: \\servname\c$ to copy the files, but I was just curious if there was a patch in the works, or if anyone else had another solution rather than my workaround?

Can't get roaming or mandatory profiles to work in 2008 R2 RDS

$

I am going nuts trying to get profiles set up for RDS users.  It used to be easy in W2K3.

I have a couple of Windows 2008 R2 servers that I have published applications on.  I need some specific registry settings in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover\RedirectServers].  Since this is in HKCU, it has to be set for each user that logs in.

I thought I could use a mandatory profile for that, but in 2008 R2, the only profile that can be copied out is the Default Profile, and that does not contain the registry settings I need.  I tried copying it out without putting the .MAN on it to use it as a roaming profile, and I set it to allow Domain Users to use it.  I thought that I could make the changes, then put the .MAN on the profile folder name and change the ntuser.dat to ntuser.man.  When I try to log using what I thought would be a roaming profile, I get the error: "The Group Policy Client service failed the logon.  Access is denied."  The session then closes.

How in blazes can I create a mandatory profile (or a roaming profile for that matter) configured the way I want it in Windows 2008 R2?  This was no problem in 2003, where you could copy out ANY profile; I'm not sure why Microsoft changed that aspect of it.

Thank you for your help.

RDS Licensing - 'error code 800' error

I am trying to generate a CAL pack ID at <a href="https://activate.microsoft.com/">https://activate.microsoft.com/</a> but keep getting a 'error code 800' error. The product ID of the Windows Server 2012 server RDS license server is 00184-90000-00001-AT620. I called up the Microsoft Clearinghouse number and I was advised that they are getting the same error and that I should call up Microsoft Support. Any ideas about this error and a possible solution? (The Microsoft Support number of 13 20 58 in Australia is clogged and they are not taking any calls).

Your desktop Services Session has ended - possibly due to network connectivity problems

$

Hello,

I'm trying to connect from a workstation in China running Windows 7 with all the updates to a 2012 server in Arizona that has all the latest updates.    The RD client is 6.2.9200.
They are trying to connect at 1024 by 16 bit color, no sound redirect, only clipboard for local resources, experience set for 56kbps, reconnect if connection is dropped.

They attempt to login and during the welcome screen with remote it will say

Your remote desktop services session has ended.

The connection to the remote computer was lost, possibly due to network connectivity problems.    Try connecting to the remote computer again.   If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support.

If that same computer attempts to connect to a number of 2008 R2 servers in Arizona on the same network switch - they can connect without issue.   This only occurs connecting to 2012 servers.   I can log in as that same user from another workstation anywhere in the US and RD works fine.   I've tried from an XP machine with the latest RD client, a Windows 7 PC and Windows 2008 R2 all running the latest client and they all have the same issue from our China office but only to 2012 RD servers, not to 2008 RD servers on the same subnet.

I can remote to it from other places within the US, but it seems very sensitive and only works 20% of the time when connecting from computers in China - sometimes they work the next day the same computer may not. We have about a 2mbit throughput between locations when copying files. The latency is high but it is in China so I'm not expecting instantaneous connectivity.    Our connection to the US is as optimized by China Telecom as we can get for routing.

Remoteapp and VM Query

$

Hi All - Any Assistance with the following would be appreciated.

I understand that the requirements for remotapp services to clients are as follows:

Scenario 10 users to access an application (application can run multiple instances simultaneously on one host (instance of server 2012)) via remoteapp over the internet.

1x Server 2012 License (Standard)
10x CAL's
10x RDS CAL's

What I would like to know is the following:

If I decide to install a bare metal framework such as vmware vshpere ESXI and then install Server 2012 Standard VM as well as a Windows 7 Ultimate VM and then install the app on the VM Windows 7 OS will my clients be able to remoteapp via the windows 7 VM?

Or

Is the remoteapp feature only available to the server 2012 package there fore the app must be installed on server 2012.?

If it is possible for my clients to remoteapp via the VM windows 7 will I require any additional licenses or requirements for the number of clients accessing the VM windows 7 via remoteapp?

Are there limitations regarding RAM/CPU capacity if I decide to take this route?

I understand that per instance of Server 2012 Standard only 2 cpus are allowed per server. Does this mean that if I have a 16 core cpu server I can only dedicate 2 cpus to a single instance of windows server 2012?

If so as a scenario if I want the windows server 2012 to make full use of the 16 cores what licensing requirements will have to be met?

Can I install any application for remoteapp purposes (if the application allows multiple instance to be executed simultaneously on one host ie instance of windows server 2012) on a Windows Server 2012 instance, similarly as if the app was installed on a Windows 7 Ultimate instance?

Will the licenses as stated in the above scenario allow my clients access to the remoteapp feature only?

Or

Will they be able to access a full virtualized desktop (with user policies and restrictions) if need be?

Thank you once again for the assistance
