Managing user sessions in RDS on Server 2012 R2

I'm planning on deploying Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services, and I'm finding I'm going to have to go to a training class!  Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do that before deploying. I've figured out how to use policy editor to configure what I used to accomplish in "Terminal Services Configuration". What tool do I use to manage Remote Apps, and what tool do I use to view session details? I know I can remote control user sessions from Task Manager, but that doesn't give visibility to view session idle time, logon time, etc.

Strange network bandwidth management

Hi,

I've noticed some strange behaviour of Remote Desktop Services.

I have remote Windows Server 2012 R2 running in data center. There is 100 Mb/s download / 100 Mb/s upload internet link tested with speedtest.net. I have also two laptops with Windows 8.1 in my office running on 25 Mb/s donwload / 3 Mb/s upload link. One of the laptops has 1280 x 800 screen resolution and the second one has 2880 x 1620 pixels.

I tested the connection speed by downloading 2 GB file from Windows Server to my laptop. File was downloaded with 25 Mb/s speed as expected. So the connection is perfectly OK.

I've configured our application as RemoteApp on Windows Server and have been testing this environment on my laptops. Some modules of our application are "rendering intensive" - they change some big portion of screen 10 times per second.  And here the problem starts.

When I test RemoteApp only on my low resolution laptop all work great. RDP protocol utilizes about 1 Mb/s of bandwidth.

When I test application on my high resolution laptop RDP protocol utilizes about 5 Mb/s of bandwidth and application presents very low frame rate (1 frame per second maybe). I don't know why this happens. I have 20 Mb/s link and only 5 Mb/s is being used by RDP.

And magic happens...

When I start my RemoteApp on both laptops frame rate is perfect on both of them! Windows Server is uploading 14 Mb/s (1 Mb/s to low resolution laptop and 13 Mb/s to high resolution one). It streams 6 Mb/s more to high resolution laptop than in "single laptop" scenario! When I close or even minimize (!) application on low resolution laptop the frame rate on second laptop degrades. When the application is resumed, frame rate goes up.

The same behaviour is observed when I run RemoteApp on high resolution laptop only but I connect through RDP to my Windows Server and turn on session shadowing. I observe my laptop's session through shadowing and frame rate magically goes up.

It's strange that streaming RDP sessions to two laptops produces better experience than doing it only for one client. I'm able to reproduce this behaviour every day, every time in two locations with different internet service providers.

I turned off all magic fair sharing (disk, CPU, network) on Windows Server but without any success. The same about turning off UDP connections or connecting with and without RD Gateway. I think that there is some magic algorithm for resources management that is causing it. I've been searching internet and testing different scenarios for week but without any luck.

Have anybody seen something like this? I would be very grateful for your help.

RDS 2012 R2: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the (name-of-service) service

Hi guys,

On a random base (daily, weekly) we're experiencing major log-in problems on our Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services farm. The VM's are hosted on Hyper-V 2008 hosts and we're not using Citrix techniques etc.

Users are reporting that they cannot log-in, the log-in sessions hangs with a blank screen when loading their user profile (e.g. Please Wait For The User Profile Service).

In the System event log of the server on which the user is logging on the following errors are shown:

Source:        Service Control Manager
Date:          23-12-2014 7:28:01
Event ID:      7011
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Description:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after 30 (or sometimes 60) seconds, the same error only another service (in random order):

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after exactly 30 seconds, the same error only another service:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UxmSms service.

etcetera, with the following errors:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AudioEndPointBuilder service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the WPDBusEnum service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service.

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrkWks service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

These errors are logged continuously.

An administrator cannot solve this since he isn't able to login in as well (console or remotely), only a hard reset of the VM is possible to use the affected server again.

I took different steps to solve this problem without any success, like:

- Installing the latest Windows updates
- Removed unnecessary printer drivers, print monitors and print processors (no local printers/drivers are installed, only Remote Desktop Easy Printer driver is used)
- Searched different forum posts, but found only hotfixes for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Can someone please help me with this annoying problem?

Many thanks!!

EDIT:
Of course is increasing the time-out not really an option here... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13765.event-id-7011-service-timeout.aspx

Best practice for licence server for RDS Farm & Certificate errors

$

Hello,

I am in the process of creating an RDS farm using Server 2008 R2.  I have three Session Hosts and a Connection Broker.

I have a set of 10 user CALs available and also another 20 on our current RDS server which will need migrating once we go live with the farm.

I understand the User CALs need to be installed on another Server 2008 R2 and I am wondering what is best practice.  We are running on an entirely virtual environment and it would be simple enough to create another server and install the CALs on there.  The only issue with that is that I would need to create a replica of this new machine for DR purposes, but this would take up valuable space which may not be necessary.

We are planning on creating replicas of one of the Session hosts and the broker for DR, so I am guessing I would need to install some CALs on the Session Host which is going to be replicated.

There are a few options and I am just wondering what is the best way to go about things.

Also, as an aside, I am getting an annoying certificate error each time I log a test user onto the RDS farm - I think this is because I am using the DNS alias of the RDS Farm to log on. Is there an easy way to get around this, other than the 'Do not show this message again'. I have been doing some research and the world of Certificates is very confusing!!

Thanks,

Caroline

Running Dynamics GP 2013 as a RemoteApp hosted on Server 2012R2 with Windows 7 clients.  Everything that requires a new window to pen in the RemoteApp will initially flash open the disappear behind everything else.  Has anyone found a solution to this?  I've tried the registry fix and various hotfixes.

Cannot use Remote Desktop on public ip

Hi all,

I have a server running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation. The server has 2 NIC. One local, one public.

The problem is that I cannot connect to the server using RemoteDesktop on the public IP. If I telnet 3389 it's not even opened.

If I connect to the local IP it works just fine.

I ran netstat -a and noticed that the port is opened only on 10.10.1.102:3398 (that is the local IP ) and didn't see any 0.0.0.0:3389  . I even disabled the firewall and tried that way but still can't connect.

Basically I can't open 3398 on the public. Any clues why this is happening'??

Thank you!

RDP incorectly using 2008-r2 compatible mode (VDI on 2012 r2 / 8.1 enterpise)

I have set up a VDI solution for testing, but I am having an issue getting a connection using the new features added in 2012-r2 and 8.1

When connecting from a Windows computer using the RDP client, I am getting a message logged on the server that session is using 2008-r2 compatible mode. My whole reason for setting this up was to test the improvements in 2012-r2, then make a decision about what to put into testing and then production.

The relevant log entries:

RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS - EventID 165
RemoteFX Encoding for RemoteFX Clients designed for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is enabled and a compatible session was created.

RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS - EventID 162
The client supports version 0x80105 of the RDP graphics protocol, client mode: 0, H264 enabled: 0

The logs above show a compatibility mode session is being made and the new H264 encoding is not being used.
I have spent some time going through all the RDS group policy settings, but nothing seems to have any effect.
How can I get the RDP client to connect using the RDP 8.1 features?

Note. I have tried the ServerTechnical Preview/Windows 10 Enterprise Preview, and The new features all worked straight away with no extra configuration, on the same hardware.

System Setup is:
Server 2012 r2 standard (this is running all the RDS roles on one server, its just for testing)
8.1 Enterprise Pooled VMs
8.1 Enterprise RDP Client

Hardware setup for the server is:
Intel i7-5820k
X99 chipset board
32GB DDR4
2x Geforce GT730 (I have also tried a Gefore GTX670 and a Radeon 6870)

need instructions/script for automating webfeed insertion forRemote APP on Windows 7 clients.

As known Windows 8.1 has a straight forward solution. But for 7 it should be inserted for each user profile.

Thx

UPD, Black Screen, and Securing connection

$

Hello All,

I have configured a Server 2012 R2 RDS setup. I have the RDCB's in HA and have allowed access to the collection (Pooled Desktop) via the RDWA server. All of the connections come from Windows 8.1 to windows 8.1 stations in the pool. UPD's are configured and hosted on a share on a secondary server. Most of the time everything works correctly; however, when I do have issues it is one of the following 3.

1. The user logs in and gets a temporary profile. The cause is that the UPD is locked from the last log on. There is no way to remove the lock without restarting the UPD server; however, this causes every now log on to get a temp profile until the server is back on line.

2. The user logs into the system and instead of the desktop are presented with a black screen and a mouse pointer. I found a reference to this being linked to the loading of the UPD as well but I have not been able to prove this yet. (http://jjstellato.blogspot.ca/2014/06/are-you-thinking-of-using-user-profile.html)

3. The last issue is when a user clicks the collection icon on the RDWA page it starts to load the rdp connection and it gets stuck at securing connection. It will just sit a securing connection forever. I am using a wildcard certificate for this setup that we have purchased.

All of these issue are intermittent and usually hard to reproduce on a consistent basis, so if anyone has any ideas on any of these please let me know.

Thanks,

Scott

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

RDS Licensing

I installed/activated 5 RDS licenses a little while back and all was good. I then purchased an additional 5 licenses, and followed the same steps to install those, thinking I would now have a total of 10 licenses available. However, when I look at the "RD Licensing Diagnoser", it reports that I only have 5 licenses available for clients. Shouldn't it be reporting that I have 10 licenses? Or am I wrongly interpreting the "number of licenses available for clients"?

RDS Licensing Problem

Hello,

I installed a retail license pack on my RDS License server. Right now it shows Total Licenses = 10, Available 0, Issued =0. The following is from the CAL Usage report I ran a few minutes ago.

CAL Usage Report
RD License Server:,"UDSTX2O"
Report Date:,"Friday, January 9, 2015 2:29:35 PM"

CAL Version,CAL Type,Installed CALs,CALs in Use,CAL Availability
Windows Server 2012,RDS Per Device CAL,10,0,Available

No Per User License has been Issued

No Per User License Issuance has failed

No Per Device License has been issued

Can you please tell me why there are 0 available and what I can do to fix this? I can't find any solution on any of the blogs.

Thank you in advance.

RDP8+, "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred"

$

Ok, I have racked my brain trying to figure this out and I'm out of ideas.

Issue - Random Windows 7 PC that has updated to RDP 8.0 gets this error when they try to connect to a server we have set up for them through a gateway.  Only happens when the computer is updated to RDP8.  Downgrading to RDP7.1 fixes the issue and they can connect just fine.

The issue only affect a very small number of computers.  Most Windows 7 computers with RDP 8.0 can connect just fine.  But right now, I am working with a client that has their own computers and domain (I have no control over) that are affected by this issue.  This is not the only client I have run into with this issue as well.

This problem is essentially what is described here - http://www.examiner.com/article/fixing-an-error-occurred-on-the-remote-computer-with-remote-desktop-connection  Except I would really like to know if there is a fix other than uninstalling RDP 8.

migrate windows 2008 RDS licensing to Window 2012 server

I want to migrate w2k8 RDS user cal licenses that I want to split in half and migrate to two new w2k12r2 servers.  Do you know if the User cals purchased from Microsoft can be split up and move to two separate servers?  Also, if I migrate the RDS licenses from the w2k8 server to the w2k12 r2 box, will it deactivate the licenses that are on the w2k8r server?  The reason I ask is because I want of backout plan in case the new license server migration fails.  If not, I can always just install the licensing role on another server and use the grace period.  so if something goes wrong with the w2k12r2 server, will the licenses on the old w2k8 server still work? I see mixed results on the different forums I read so wanted to see if I could get a definite answer based on everyone's experience on this forum.

Thanks in advance!
