Black spots with RemoteApps using the Microsoft Remote Desktop on a mac

Hi, I'm dealing with a very strange problem with black spots while using a remoteapp. See the picture for the black spots. It's only happening when I use the MS Remote Desktop App on a mac (version 8.0.12, latest version of the appstore).

The RDS enviroment that we're using is Server 2012 R2 based with all the RD roles installed on several servers. Has someone any idea where to look? I've tried several things, LAN experience on the RD Web access disabled, new user without roaming profile, nothing works. Sorry for the big picture...

Farm member not using 3rd party certificate

I have a Microsoft server 2008 R2 RDS farm using a broker and NLB farm nodes.

In the farm member node ( not the broker ), I open  “Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration” tool I selected “member of farm RD Connection Broker” and in the “general” tab under the “certificate” section I clicked “select” and picked the 3rd party Certificate.

This is a Farm member. When I use a rdp client to go to farmName.domain.com I get a pop up with a certificate error and it shows the certificate as serverName.domain.com and not the name in the “farm” certificate.

How can I troubleshoot this issue.

Apple IOS stuck at evaluating connection

I have VDI lab on Hyper-V and connections to VDI desktops works fine on Windows and Android - clients, but not on Apple IOS (8.1.2). Apple tablet hangs on "evaluating connection type/bandwidth" and after a while returns claiming to check connection or VDI instance. Same user name and VDI works fine on other client platforms. In IOS I installed MS´s official RDS client.

Did anyone tried this? My hyper-v&RDS platform is on 2012 R2.

Hi all,

I am working on securing our windows server 2012 R2 remote desktop servers and I think this is the only piece that's left behind. is there a way to hide all these folders from windows explorer, including Libraries?

All that users need is the mapped network drive that you see below.

Thanks in advance.

GPO NOT WORKING ON ADDITIONAL TERMINAL SERVER

I have a GPO with setting to use a fake proxy and settings to gray out the proxy settings for some users on a terminal server that worked fine. Having added an additional terminal server to replace the original, I cannot get the same GPO to work. Somehow I am not getting the GPO applied correctly or linked so that it is effecting the newly added terminal server. Can I get some clarification on this procedure?

Windows Server 2003 AD server.  Original TS is server 2008 R2.  Replacement TS is also server 2008 R2. The replacement is already up and running and properly joined to the same domain as the original TS.

I am running Windows 2012 R2 servers and my goal is: - connection broker should load balance the connections and the gateway server should allow remoteapp connections.

Server rdbl  -    remote desktop connection broker and licensing server
Server rdgw -   remote desktop gateway server
Server rds01 -  remote desktop host
Server rds02  -  remote desktop host

I am following

I am not able to find Session Broker Computers group on the RDBL Broker server.

Could some one please suggest what am I doing wrong?

Best practice for licence server for RDS Farm & Certificate errors

$

Hello,

I am in the process of creating an RDS farm using Server 2008 R2.  I have three Session Hosts and a Connection Broker.

I have a set of 10 user CALs available and also another 20 on our current RDS server which will need migrating once we go live with the farm.

I understand the User CALs need to be installed on another Server 2008 R2 and I am wondering what is best practice.  We are running on an entirely virtual environment and it would be simple enough to create another server and install the CALs on there.  The only issue with that is that I would need to create a replica of this new machine for DR purposes, but this would take up valuable space which may not be necessary.

We are planning on creating replicas of one of the Session hosts and the broker for DR, so I am guessing I would need to install some CALs on the Session Host which is going to be replicated.

There are a few options and I am just wondering what is the best way to go about things.

Also, as an aside, I am getting an annoying certificate error each time I log a test user onto the RDS farm - I think this is because I am using the DNS alias of the RDS Farm to log on. Is there an easy way to get around this, other than the 'Do not show this message again'. I have been doing some research and the world of Certificates is very confusing!!

Thanks,

Caroline

Licensing Office for use via RDS

$

The Volume License brief entitled "Licensing Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services and Microsoft Desktop Applications for Use with RDS" states that, to use desktop apps in an RDS environment, it "requires that the suite/edition, components, language, and version of the license acquired for the desktops from which the desktop application is remotely accessed matches that of the copy of the application being accessed." One of the examples given is that a desktop licensed for Office Standard may not remotely access and use Office Professional Plus. That makes perfect sense to me. However, I'm pretty sure that, in the past, it was permissible for a desktop that was license for Office Professional Plus to remotely access and use Office Standard (assuming both suites are, e.g., Office 2013). When did that change?

And, on a similar note, although a desktop licensed for Office 2010 is not permitted to remotely access and use Office 2013, is it no longer permissible for a desktop licensed for Office 2013 to remotely access and use Office 2010? Because I'm pretty sure that used to be OK as well.

Full screen with different resolution from local screen

Hi,

Sitting here with a new laptop with a screen resolution by 3200x1800 running windows 8.1 pro.

Locally icons and text looks normal but connecting to a 2008 or 2012 RDS server with full screen, all icons and text get so small, it is not usable. Setting rdp screen resolution lower does not help as the window just gets smaller and unreadable.

Any way to run rdp in full screen mode with a lower resolution than the local resolution?

Free: 0-40 MB

what is causing termsvcs process to take so much memory ?

Best practice for RDGW placement in RDS 2012 R2 deployment

$

Hi,

I have been setting up a RDS 2012 R2 farm deployment and the time has come for setting up the RDGW servers. I have a farm with 4 SH servers, 2 WA servers, 2 CB servers and 1 LS.

Farm works great for LAN and VPN users.

Now i want to add two domain joined RDGW servers.

The question is; I've read a lot on technet and different sites about how to set the thing up, but no one mentions any best practices for where to place them.

Should i:

- set up WAP in my DMZ with ADFS in LAN, then place the RDGW in the LAN and reverse proxy in

- place RDGW in the DMZ, opening all those required ports into the LAN

- place the RDGW in the LAN, then port forward port 443 into it from internet

Any help is greatly appreciated.

RemoteApp Windows not staying on top

Running Dynamics GP 2013 as a RemoteApp hosted on Server 2012R2 with Windows 7 clients.  Everything that requires a new window to pen in the RemoteApp will initially flash open the disappear behind everything else.  Has anyone found a solution to this?  I've tried the registry fix and various hotfixes.

How to define a background for a remote desktop session that is locked in a program - server 2012 R2?

$

We have Remote Desktop configured on Windows Server 2012 R2 to “start a program on connection” (via Group Policy). It is a “standard” deployment of Remote Desktop Services with session-based connections. Desktop Experience is also installed on the server.

Everything works as expected, however we are unable to set a background color for the desktop behind the program that is started on connection.

In previous versions of remote desktop, we could log on to the console (or to a session that was not locked into the application) and set a background color, and then that color would then be displayed behind the program that is started on connection.  With 2012 R2, we cannot change the black screen that is displayed behind the program. We have tried personalizing the desktop, group policy settings for background, registry settings, etc.  We can display a background using any of those methods when the user is not locked into the application, but as soon as we apply the “Start a program on connection” setting, the background turns black. Is there a way to make the background some other color when the user is locked into an application? We have tried this with (Group Policy, User Configuration, Policies, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Remote Desktop Services, Remote Desktop Session Host, Remote Session Environment) “Remove remote desktop wallpaper” both “Disabled” and “Not configured”, telling the client to allow “Desktop background” and “Desktop composition”. Our goal is not to bring along a background, but simply to have an option to display something with less contrast that the plain black background screen.

Thanks in advance for your response!

RDS 2012 CAL Users on Win 2012 R2 to server license for 2008

Hi

I have installed and activated 50 RDS Per User CALs on Windows 2012 R2 with installed Remote Desktop Licensing role:

But as you can see this server is not serving the CAL for Windows 2008. What need to be done to make it work?

RDP incorectly using 2008-r2 compatible mode (VDI on 2012 r2 / 8.1 enterpise)

$

I have set up a VDI solution for testing, but I am having an issue getting a connection using the new features added in 2012-r2 and 8.1

When connecting from a Windows computer using the RDP client, I am getting a message logged on the server that session is using 2008-r2 compatible mode. My whole reason for setting this up was to test the improvements in 2012-r2, then make a decision about what to put into testing and then production.

The relevant log entries:

RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS - EventID 165
RemoteFX Encoding for RemoteFX Clients designed for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is enabled and a compatible session was created.

RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS - EventID 162
The client supports version 0x80105 of the RDP graphics protocol, client mode: 0, H264 enabled: 0

The logs above show a compatibility mode session is being made and the new H264 encoding is not being used.
I have spent some time going through all the RDS group policy settings, but nothing seems to have any effect.
How can I get the RDP client to connect using the RDP 8.1 features?

Note. I have tried the ServerTechnical Preview/Windows 10 Enterprise Preview, and The new features all worked straight away with no extra configuration, on the same hardware.

System Setup is:
Server 2012 r2 standard (this is running all the RDS roles on one server, its just for testing)
8.1 Enterprise Pooled VMs
8.1 Enterprise RDP Client

Hardware setup for the server is:
Intel i7-5820k
X99 chipset board
32GB DDR4
2x Geforce GT730 (I have also tried a Gefore GTX670 and a Radeon 6870)

Basic theme corrupt, black boxes in apps when connected

$

Hi....

On one of our Windows 2012 Remote Desktop Host servers we have the following problem.

--Not working example:

THE PROBLEM

-- Working example:

WORKING

---

So black boxes all over the place. When I troubleshooted this as admin I found that switching the theme to "Windows" under Windows standard theme  made the black boxes go away. But switching to the "Windows Basic" them makes them appear again.

So:

-- How do I fix the basic theme? As this is the theme regular users uses and they have no option of changing theme. RemoteApp technology is used.

-- Or possibly, as I think it works fine with the "Windows" theme, how do I apply this to all users logging in to the server?

Also, I have tried to find a solution on this on the forum, the internet and be general troubleshooting. No errors in the event log in Windows......

Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you in advance.
