RDS 2012 weird printing problem

$

Hello All,

We have a very strange issue with 1 of our users. She can crash the print spooler very frequently. The problems almost always occurs when she need to print an excel file. Due to the frequency we needed to make sure the print spooler would always restart otherwise making all of our users unable to print. The excel file she's trying to print isn't that large (90kb) and contains data from column A - AB. It consist of 684 rows of data. She then goes to file --> Print selects a printer and *boom* the spooler crashes. It than display a message. The message usually lists:

1) Cannot connect to the printer
2) No printers installed

This also makes the event viewer fill up with the following events:

While testing we came across a strange phenomena. When she logs onto a RDS server using RemoteApp we see that automatically a group of printers gets created. Those are not displayed in excel/word/outlook/etc. and are only visable trough Control Panel. If we delete those and she relogs the automatically get recreated. Which printers are added differs from the server she is logged on by our load balancer.

Background of our RDS

Our RDS environment consist of a connection broker and 2 application servers. All of which are running Server 2012 (non R2). All applications are started as a remoteapp from a Windows 7 or 8(.1) update 1)) or axel zero client. User have Remote Roaming Profiles (RRP) and a User Profile Disk (UPD). These are cached onto the RDS server, so creating a new profile is almost impossible by our knowledge.

The odd part of all this is that we cannot reproduce this issue, and only this 1 user has this issue. Even removing all printers and leaving just the XPS and one note printer from Microsoft is enough to let the spooler crash. Because of this (and the fact that no one else has this problem) makes me very certain this isn't an issue with our Print server;RDS server or Drivers.

So my question basically come down to:

1) Can i easily give the user a new profile even though the profiles are cached? (since this is a production environment a reboot can only happen on maintenance periods)

2) Where are these extra printers coming from? And how do i get rid of them?

General troubleshooting tips on this issue are welcome. As i'd like to know how this started or how i can find more helpfull information.

Thanks guys and have a happy x-mas.

Office 2013 over Windows Server 2012 RDP World Add-On Macro/Template Error

I have a new Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop environment for about ten users (not R2) with the latest Office 2013 Pro installed.

The users all have an add-on word template in Word for Office 2013.  That add-on was installed as administrator and ONLY works as administrator.

When any other user (even if they are local administrators, domain admins, etc.) opens Word, they are immediately prompted with the following message:

"Could not load some objects because they are not available on this machine."

If a user "runs as administrator" it runs fine.  Obviously, I don't want that.  I have been searching and searching and thought maybe there was a group policy or Office setting someone may know that I just can't find.

Any help would be awesome!  Thank you.

Windows Server 2012 RDS server Session time limits using group policy

HI Team,

Configured Windows Server 2012 RDS server Session time limits using group policy.

I need to kill the disconnected session in 1 minute and Session time limit for active but idle remote desktop service seession configured to 30 minutes.

Also enable the Set time limit for active Remote desktop service session and End session when time limits are reached policies.

Disconnected session are getting disconnected after 1 minutes if user clicks disconnected on my RDS server.

Some users not closing the RDP session just leaving idle before they leave the office.

The other policies enabled are working for me.

Please advise if i still need to configure anything .

Regards,

Varma.

RemoteApp Disconnecting Constantly

We seem to be having a werid issue where Remoteapp's are disconnecting and then reconnecting with a split second. The problem is that when it does then (roughly every 5 to 15 minutes) it will flash back onto your screen as a new window.

The problem does not happen when the remote app is minimised but happens when the remoteapp is just one of the background apps with other windows in front of it.

Looking at the logs I can see Event ID 40 and where the user disconnects with error 0 and then reconnects 3 seconds later with Event ID 40.

If I am RDP'd onto the machine - I do not seem to have the same problem, it only appears to be through all our of Remote Applications that the drop out occurs.

This issue is happening internally and externally, users are on different switches. Issue only looks to have occured since windows updates were installed last week. But I cannot find any known issues with this particular problem.

Hi,

please provide a link to the solution for automating Remote App icon placement on Windows 7 desktop.

I saw once a TechNet article with a script.

I am using RDS 2012 R2 Remote App with webfeed on Windows 7 machines.

Thx.

need instructions/script for automating webfeed insertion forRemote APP on Windows 7 clients.

As known Windows 8.1 has a straight forward solution. But for 7 it should be inserted for each user profile.

Thx

For test purpose and potentially production purpose i like to install this in a virtual machine.

For the time being i checking which hypervisor can support this deployment:

- VMware ESX

- Microsoft Hyper-V

- other ??

Can you advise on the best deployement for using RDS with VDI service ?

Is it mandatory to have a physical server or can i use a VM ?

Question concerning the state of licenses of a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server after disolving the Domain, the DC, and the AD.

$

Background: - several months back a Windows 2008 r2 domain existed with a DC, and an AD.  Windows servers where apart of this domain.  One of the servers being a Windows 2008 R2 server with Remote Desktop Services loaded.  The server was properly licensed for 8 User CALS.  All was operating correctly.  Since that time the domain has been removed, the DC removed and the AD removed.  What is left are Windows 2008 R2 servers in a workgroup.  Again, one being the Remote Desktop Server.

Q1. Can the functioning Per User CALs (totaling 8) remain as Per User CALs?

Q2. Am I required to switch them to 8 Per Device CALs?

Referencing: "Best practices for setting up Remote Desktop Licensing...." - Article 2473823

In the above article it states under "RDS HOST and RDS Licensing servers are in the same Workgroup" that "We can use ONLY Per Device CALs in a workgroup environment. So, you should install only Per Device CALs on RDS licensing server." ( Which in my case they are both the same server.

Any information regarding what licensing options that can be used on a workgroup RDS server would be appreciated.

Access Denied trying to Remote Control a user session

$

Brand new Win2k8 SP2 server that is also a domain controller. From an administrator session or any user who is a domain admin I can right click any other users session in the Terminal Services Manager and the Remote Control menu item is available however, no matter what state they are in, the icon shows a little red arrow pointing down. Once I click on Remote Control I get the Remote Control hot key assignment box. When I click on the OK button I get a dialog box with a header of Terminal Services Manager, in the body of the dialog box it says "Access is denied" and you have an OK button. There are no messages in the event logs. The session I am trying to remote control is a RemoteApp sitting on another workstation 3 feet away. The login it is using works fine with RemoteApp or a full RDP session either way. I currently am having NO problems connecting from any client to the server. Only from a remote session trying to remote control any other session.

I can do CMD, shadow (id number), and take control of any valid session that way but since this will be used by managers to train others that's not an option for them.

In the Default Domain Policy GPO and the Default Domain Controllers Policy I have enabled:

Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Terminal Services/Terminal Server/Connections
Policy: Set rules for remote control of Terminal Services user sessions
Setting: Full Control without user's permission

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Terminal Services/Terminal Server/Connections
Policy: Set rules for remote control of Terminal Services user sessions
Setting: Full Control without user's permission

In the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) I enabled:

Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Terminal Services/Terminal Server/Connections
Policy: Set rules for remote control of Terminal Services user sessions
Setting: Full Control without user's permission

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Terminal Services/Terminal Server/Connections
Policy: Set rules for remote control of Terminal Services user sessions
Setting: Full Control without user's permission

In Terminal Services Configuration (properties for RDP-Tcp) I have permissions set on the Security tab for Domain Admins and Remote Dekstop Users. The users in question are all in the Remote Desktop Users group. The Remote Control tab shows the proper group policy setting of full control without user's permission.

Local Security Policy user rights assignments are all good for actually connecting as users. Nothing there that I can tell that allows or disallows the remote control sessions.

Each user I have tried this with I have edited their ADUC properties to be sure that Enable remote control is checked, require user's permission is not checked, and interact with the sesson is checked.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I have a problem with a RD Gateway 2012 R2, that domain users can't log on over the RD Gateway to the RD Sessionhost. I get an error message in the eventlog on the RD Gateway.

The domain administrator can log on successfully over the RD Gateway. When i log on a domain user on the RD Gateway server console first and then log on over the RD Gateway, the authentication works fine.

The RD Gateway 2012 R2 has been installed as well as the instructions (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754191.aspx). I have tried a lots of things, but without a result.

e.g.

  • register NPS in the AD
  • all ports in the Firewall between LAN and DMZ are opened
  • set the "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" to "Send NTLMv2 response only"
  • re-install of the RD Gateway 2012 R2

Environment:

All machines have Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows 8/8.1 with the latest updates. All servers are virtualized with Hyper-V.

  • Domaincontroller (LAN)
  • RD Sessionhost (LAN)
  • RD Gateway (DMZ)
  • Clients (DMZ/WAN)
  • Hardware-Firewall (3-zone)

Does anyone have an idea, what might be the problem?

What is the criteria for a local network with RDS Gateway 2012?

$

I have a hard time finding out what the criteria are how RDS 2012 detemines that the network the client is on is a local network or an external one.  I have one subnet within our network that isn't recognised as a local network and all RDS traffic is passed to the gateway server. This is something we don't want for internal addresses. Can anyone enlighten me how RDS determines whether you are on an internal or external network?

Thanks!

RemoteApps crashes on initial connection when profile is built

$

I have an all Server 2012 RDS deployment that I've built and I've run into an issue.  When a user attempts to launch a remote app for the first time, the app crashed every time.  However, the app will successfully launch from the second attempt on.

From what I can tell, the app is crashing because the Session Host is building the user's profile but because of the delay from building the profile the app doesn't launch and crashes.  If the user waits a few minutes (presumably enough time for the profile to finish) then relaunches the app works fine.

I have 1 Connection Broker, 2 Session Hosts, and 2 RD Web Access servers.  All the permissions are working correctly and the CB is redirecting correctly.  The issue only occurs on the initial login.  Any ideas?

GPO NOT WORKING ON ADDITIONAL TERMINAL SERVER

I have a GPO with setting to use a fake proxy and settings to gray out the proxy settings for some users on a terminal server that worked fine. Having added an additional terminal server to replace the original, I cannot get the same GPO to work. Somehow I am not getting the GPO applied correctly or linked so that it is effecting the newly added terminal server. Can I get some clarification on this procedure?

Windows Server 2003 AD server.  Original TS is server 2008 R2.  Replacement TS is also server 2008 R2. The replacement is already up and running and properly joined to the same domain as the original TS.

Licensing Office for use via RDS

$

0

The Volume License brief entitled "Licensing Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services and Microsoft Desktop Applications for Use with RDS" states that, to use desktop apps in an RDS environment, it "requires that the suite/edition, components, language, and version of the license acquired for the desktops from which the desktop application is remotely accessed matches that of the copy of the application being accessed." One of the examples given is that a desktop licensed for Office Standard may not remotely access and use Office Professional Plus. That makes perfect sense to me. However, I'm pretty sure that, in the past, it was permissible for a desktop that was license for Office Professional Plus to remotely access and use Office Standard (assuming both suites are, e.g., Office 2013). When did that change?

And, on a similar note, although a desktop licensed for Office 2010 is not permitted to remotely access and use Office 2013, is it no longer permissible for a desktop licensed for Office 2013 to remotely access and use Office 2010? Because I'm pretty sure that used to be OK as well.

Farm member not using 3rd party certificate

I have a Microsoft server 2008 R2 RDS farm using a broker and NLB farm nodes.

In the farm member node ( not the broker ), I open  “Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration” tool I selected “member of farm RD Connection Broker” and in the “general” tab under the “certificate” section I clicked “select” and picked the 3rd party Certificate.

This is a Farm member. When I use a rdp client to go to farmName.domain.com I get a pop up with a certificate error and it shows the certificate as serverName.domain.com and not the name in the “farm” certificate.

How can I troubleshoot this issue.

Black spots with RemoteApps using the Microsoft Remote Desktop on a mac

Hi, I'm dealing with a very strange problem with black spots while using a remoteapp. See the picture for the black spots. It's only happening when I use the MS Remote Desktop App on a mac (version 8.0.12, latest version of the appstore).

The RDS enviroment that we're using is Server 2012 R2 based with all the RD roles installed on several servers. Has someone any idea where to look? I've tried several things, LAN experience on the RD Web access disabled, new user without roaming profile, nothing works. Sorry for the big picture...

Michiel
