Remote Desktop Connection attempted with 2 users already connected no longer gets dialog showing who is connected and option to force user off

$

On Windows 2008 Server R2, when the maximum number of users are connected via Remote Desktop (2) and another user attempts to connect via Remote Desktop, the user is prompted with a login dialog. Upon login, a dialog is shown with the User Id's of the users who are connected, their current state (active or idle for x minutes) and it gives you the option to request access from a user or to force a user off. Recently our server stopped displaying this message and now only gives an error message that it cannot connect. It does not show the login dialog, just an immediate connection error message. So now we don't know who is logged into the server. This presents a problem with many users who need to deploy software or manage server resources. What setting could have changed that would stop displaying the login and the current users dialog? Thanks!

I purchased a per device CAL and was wondering about this because we have more than 5 devices. If one device is signed on and is using a licence then signs off does that licence become available for a new device then? Or am I stuck with the same 5 devices even if they are not still signed on.

Is is possible to set everything on just one single server? the broker, web, pool?

I'm using windows server 2012 r2 in the server and windows 7 in the low-end laptop

Thanks in advance :)

License Problem

Hi!

Is it possible to let a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server release a device license when the user logs off from Terminal Server? We have device licenses and not user licenses for terminal server. The users are unable to login if all the device licenses are taken even if the pcs who are taking the licenses are not connected to the Terminal Server.

Thanks.

RDP from Windows 7 to Server 2012 Terminal Server - Unable to save credentials

$

My office has 20 Windows 7 Pro desktops running and they all RDP to a Server 2008 using Term Serv and can save user credentials just fine.

We are moving to a new Server 2012 Term Server we'll be connecting to and we can connect to it as long as we don't have the RDP client set to save credentials.  If we have it set to save credentials, we get this error:

"The specified user name does not exist.  Verify the username and try logging in again.  If the problem continues, contact your system administrator or technical support."

The odd thing is that I do have a single Windows 8.1 desktop PC and that one works just fine with saved credentials.  I checked my Win7 PC's and the version of mstec.exe and they are nearly all different ranging from version 6.1 to 6.3 but they all have the same problem.  I checked the version of mstec.exe on the Win8.1 machine and it is version 6.3.

Anyone have this problem and a potential resolution for it?

Thanks.

Gateway Loses the Certificate with Every Reboot

Helpful Friends:

I have had Remote Desktop Gateway running on my domain controller on Server 2012 successfully for a year or more.  But recently I have begun experiencing a problem where the certificate is lost every time the server reboots.

I have downloaded and reinstalled my certificate and installed the new intermediate certificate, but the problem continues.  I've looked at other threads but none have helped.

This is enormously disruptive to our workplace because we are entirely virtualized with lots of access from outside our LAN.

Can anyone help?

RemoteFX Scanner Redirection Driver Issue

Hi All,

Attempting to test/setup scanner redirection to a 2012 R2 RDS.

I have RDP v7+, and have enabled the gpedit setting to allow for RemoteFX device passthrough.

My problem is - The device passes through fine, 'HP ScanJet 1000', along with the dreaded yellow exclamation stating the drivers for this device are not installed.

It is my understanding the hardware drivers do not need to be installed on the server for RemoteFX scanning to function? In any case, i installed the drivers on the server as well as an additional measure to no avail.

If i manually force the driver install on the device, i receive the following message;

"An error occured during the installation of the device;

The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor."

I have tried 3 different scanners, all with the same result.

Optimize Start Menu Cache Files

Hi,

We have setup a brand new Remote Desktop Services farm with 10 Session Hosts for 200 users.

Now we see the Task 'Optimize Start Menu Cache Files xxx(SID)' for about 200 times on every Session Host server.

These can be deleted but they return whenever a user logs onto a specific Session Host server.

How can this be prevented?

This has been addressed in another thread (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/how-do-i-permanently-delete-this-task-scheduler/0fd8f7a0-c182-45c1-ad42-f02d768cb295), but the solution there would be to stop the Tasks individually of stop the Task Scheduler. Both are obviously not what I, or anyone else, want.

SERVER CONFIGURATION - PROBLEM SETTING UP LICENSE SERVER

$

I HAVE SETUP WINDOWS SERVER 2012 IN A PC AND MADE IT MEMBER OF THE DOMAIN. I HAVE INSTALLED RD LICENSE SERVER AND RD GATEWAY SERVER TO THE SAME SERVER. I ALSO CONFIGURED THE LICENSING MODE TO 'PER USER' AND HAVE INSTALLED USER CAL (FOR 50 USERS). STILL IT DISPLAYS A MESSAGE ON STARTUP THAT REMOTE DESKTOP LICENSING MODE IS NOT CONFIGURED.

IS THIS COULD BE AN ISSUE OF CERTIFICATES OR TRUSTS?

RD farm in High Availability

Hi all,

I am in the process of bilding a RD farm using 3 Server 2008 VMs as RDSH.

This is a temp and may only be used for max. 3 months.

Can Session Broker and NLB installed on RDSH servers?

MS article regarding NLB states that

The Windows Server 2008-based server where you install the TS Session Broker role service does not have to be a terminal server or have Remote Desktop enabled.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771300(v=ws.10).aspx

I'm assuming this means RDSH can bea Session Broker as well?

But not sure whether we need dedicated NLB or we can use one of the RDSH's?

Please advise.

Thanks!

How can a user that uses a Remote Deskop Gateway reset their password if it expired?

Right now when a Remote Desktop Gateway user's password expires, the gateway server does not prompt them to change it. Instead, it just doesn't allow them to connect to their machine.

How can a remote user reset their expired password if they use a Remote Desktop Gateway to initiate the remote session?

SPLA licencing, reduce the number of users

Hello,

I want to ask about Remote desktop services and SPLA licencing. We have Windows server 2008 r2 with remote desktop services installed. Where are installed 17 terminal server user cals and we using SPLA licencing. But in next month, we will have only 14 users. So question would be, we must pay for 17 or for 14 users? And if we must pay for 17 users, how reduce the number of users in remote desktop services? How uninstall cals? We must reinstall remote desktop services and reinstall cals, or where is another way?

RDS 2012 RemoteApp Deployment Issues

$

I'm wondering if anyone would be able to help please?

Current Setup:

We have 4 servers in total.

1 server (call it gateway) hosting the following roles: Gateway, Connection Broker, Web Access

1 server (call it app1) with the Session Host Role

1 server (call it app2) with the Session Host Role

1 server (call is licsrv) acting as RDS licence server

Internal Domain Name: domain.local

External Domain Name: domain.com

Certificate owned: *.domain.com (wildcard)

Scenario

Initially, it was our intention to have multiple single server RDS deployments, that is app1 and app2 would have all roles enabled, including the gateway role on both servers. After starting down this route, we decided that the setup listed above would be more appropriate.

I have gone through the deployment again, when prompted, I configured the FQDN of the Gateway server to be gateway.domain.com and assigned the wildcard certificate *.domain.com to all roles. All certificates show as trusted.

In the deployment properties I have the gateway.domain.com url specified, logon methodPasswod Authentication and Use RD Gateway Credentials for Remote computers selected.

The license server is configured and reporting no error in the licencing diagnostic tool.

I added the two session host servers to the deployment, and created two new collections, one from each session host. CollectionA and CollectionB. I have published two Apps in each collection.

I ran the PowerShell command Set-RDPublishedName "gateway.domain.com"because we are using a .local domain internally

All gateway policies are currently set to default, which allows all authenticated users to connect to any resource, and I have explicitly given myself permission to access both collections.

I am running Windows 7 SP1, and have installed

DTLS hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2574819 and RDP 8.0 Client Update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2592687

Issue

I can navigate to https://gateway.domain.com/rdweb, I can log in and view Apps from both collections, however I can run Apps fromApp2 but I cannot run Apps from App1. After clicking on an app I get...

An Authentication Error Has Occurred (Code 0x607); Remote computer: App1.domain.local.

This only happens with App1, and in fact about 1% of the time it works, but gives me a certificate error, and lists an old self signed certificate I temporarily used when setting up the single server deployment. It obviously is still using this certificate for some reason.

Does anyone know how I can fix this. The problem I have now is that due to time constraints these server are now in production use, and I don't really want to start removing and re-installing roles, due to server reboots etc. I did a bit of digging and found the following command ...

Get-WMIObject -class "Win32_TSGeneralSetting" -Namespace root\cimv2\terminalservices -Filter "TerminalName='RDP-tcp'"

The thumbprint  confirms that the old self signed cert (which I called RDSSSO.cert) is being used. This cert is located within the personal certificate store ofAPP1. When I compare this to APP2 which works,I can see that the thumbprint relates to a certificate called App2.domain.local that's located within the Remote Desktop Certificate store onAPP2.

Does anyone know if I'm on the right track here, and whether if I changed the thumbprint to point to the corresponding RemoteDesktop certificate on App1 it would start working?

Sorry for the very lengthy post. I'd appreciate any help anyone could offer with this.

Thanks

Richard

Basic theme corrupt, black boxes in apps when connected

Hi....

On one of our Windows 2012 Remote Desktop Host servers we have the following problem.

--Not working example:

THE PROBLEM

-- Working example:

WORKING

---

So black boxes all over the place. When I troubleshooted this as admin I found that switching the theme to "Windows" under Windows standard theme  made the black boxes go away. But switching to the "Windows Basic" them makes them appear again.

So:

-- How do I fix the basic theme? As this is the theme regular users uses and they have no option of changing theme. RemoteApp technology is used.

-- Or possibly, as I think it works fine with the "Windows" theme, how do I apply this to all users logging in to the server?

Also, I have tried to find a solution on this on the forum, the internet and be general troubleshooting. No errors in the event log in Windows......

Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you in advance.

hi friends

to provide using RemoteApp for non-admin users, we must also add them into “remote desktop users” group in LSD in RDP server.
This cause a problem, these non-admin users can establish normal remote desktop to that server & can Login & see desktop & drives & control panel &…

So how to allow non-admin users to connect to RDP server via RDP or Msi shortcuts but prevent them from login to that server via normal remote desktop session?
please give me multiple solutions to achieve this goal

thanks in advance

Citrix Receiver on RDS Server 2008 R2

$

We currently run a Windows Server 2008 R2 remote desktop services server for around 100 users.  Some of these users (circa 10) will be working with another company on a project where they need to access a Citrix server (unsure of exact details) and we have been asked by this other company (and our management) to install the Citrix Receiver onto the remote desktop services server to facilitate this.

Does anyone know if a) this is supported and b) at all possible?

Many thanks
