Only 2 users can connect to 2012 RDS despite CALs being installed

Hi there,

I have setup a client site with a Server 2012 RDS with 5 CALs. They are being hit with the 2 users limit and a third connection is required to 'select a user to disconnect so you can logon'. 5 valid device CALs are installed. Event logs are clear, TS Licence Manager reports 5 CALS are active, any suggestions?

Screenshots attached of the installed licensing server and CALS.

Thank you

I am trying to install Java on my RD Host Server and have tried several times to install both the 32 and 64 bit clients.  Both complete but when I try to verify, I think the 32-bit version launches, but never fully resolves the applet.  I get a grey box, but  nothing more.  I have tried several method of installs but nothing seems to work.

Locked out of Admin Account (Windows 7 Professional)

Hi, the person who set up our computer systems on Windows 7 Professional did it incorrectly. We are trying to use Logmein Pro so we can access our computers remotely; however, one of our computers called "Tracy" does not have an administrative password; therefore, we are locked out of the admin account. Is there a way to reset "Tracy's" admin account so we can set up logmein Pro on her computer?

Cant Create VDI collection in server 2012 r2 Transfer location failure

I'm setting up a 2012 R2 VDI install and having problems creating the VDI collection. No matter what target folder I specify as the transfer location, it says "VDI collection failed with the following errors: Unable to copy the virtual desktop to the export location. Check if the export location exists and if it is configured with the correct permissions."

That has to be an erroneous error because when I type the share location into the Deployment properties, it checks for the share an won't let me specify an invalid location.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling RDS as completely as I can but I cant seem to get rid of this problem. Where are these deployment properties stored and how can I delete them so they get recreated by the install?

Please help!

One Broker for Multiple Fams

I'm getting ready to deploy Terminal Services into a new environment and I've got a question regarding the TS Broker service.  I'm going to be deploying multiple Farms, with unrelated users and applications, and I'm curious if I need one TS broker per farm, or if I can install the Broker Service on a separate server, and point multiple, unrelated, Farms to it.

the RDS deployment has one collection with 3 browsers IE, chrome and Firefox. Problem detected memory usage by the clientes sessions when browser decides to consume a huge amount of memory from the RDS session host server.

Certificate won't renew

I am unable to connect to a server running Windows Server 2012 (not R2).  I was originally receiving two error messages in the System event log:

Source: Schannel  Event ID: 36870
"A fatal error occurred when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key.  The error code returned from the cryptographic module is 0x8009030D.  The internal error state is 10001."

Source: TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager  Event ID: 1058
"The RD Session Host Server has failed to replace the expired self signed certificate used for RD Session Host Server authentication on SSL connections.  The relevant status code was Access is denied."

These two errors were always next to each other.

I resolved the Schannel error, 36870, by giving the Network Service read access to the key in personal store for the machine:

1. I got the Unique container name by running: certutil -store My
2. I then ran icacls c:\programdata\microsoft\crypto\RSA\<Unique container name>

I am still not able to access remote desktop.  I've tried deleting the certificate in the machine store, and restarted the Remote Desktop Configuration Service.  Most articles say to just launch Remote Desktop Services Manager, however that is no longer an option in 2012.

The only other thing I can think of is importing a 3rd party signed certificate, however we don't have a CA on site, and I don't really want to have to spend money to get this to work otherwise.

Secure RDP access on Windows Server 2012 R2 with certificates

Hello. I've noticed that RDP certificates on all of our production boxes have self-signed certificates located in their respective "Remote Desktop" certificate store.

I would like all of our servers to use signed, trusted certificates from our internal PKI instead of self-signed certs Windows servers automatically generate.

I found these two articles that pretty much outline the same process but I get an error when I try to connect:

http://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0000944.htm

http://www.derekseaman.com/2013/01/creating-custom-remote-desktop-services.html

"This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator"

I'm using my Windows 8.1 workstation to RDP into a Windows 2012 R2 box. I created the RDP cert template and GPO in accordance to articles and placed the R2 box in a test OU that has that GPO applied. I'm testing it on a particular R2 box before releasing it production-wide. Also, I can confirm via PortQry and NMAP that the R2 box is listening on port 3389.

Any thoughts????? Thanks!

"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"

I have a server 2012 machine running RDP and a PDC running SBS 2007. Every once a while all my users get an error saying "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted". After waiting ~5-10 minutes the issue resolves itself. I believe it has something to do with the syncing between the two but am not 100% sure. Anyone know a fix or what I should look at?

Printer is listed as Unspecified device on Terminal Server

Hello, dear collegues!

I need your help.

Case.

On server side we have - Windows Server 2012 R2 Terminal Service (Remote Desktop Service).

On client side we have - Windows 7 Entherprise.

Print server is also on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Problem.

We have problem, that appears from time to time after user logon or after session reconnection (change working place, for example) with local printers (not redirected, they shared and connected to user session as network printer) and network printers. The problem is that printers that worked fine yesterday, now moves in "Unspecified devices".

(Screenshot I found in Internet just for evidentness).

But, if delete this "printer" and connect again - it appers in "Printer list". This happens with different printers (some of them new and officially support WS2012) with different users on different terminal servers from time to time.

Driver re-installation, I think, not a decision, because the same printer, listed as uncpecified at one user session in works fine at other user session.

Thanks for help.

RemoteApp flicker on W2k12R2 RDS platform

We have a simple w2k12r2 RDS Farm with three hosts and two rds gateway servers. One of the key applications flashes and flickers like crazy. I have used GPO to optimize the Remote Session Environment and I have also set the servers for Best Performance in Advanced Settings. All three hosts are completely up to date with Windows updates. Is there a hotfix or something else available to correct this behavior? I have a 10mb point to point connection to the RDS Hosts so bandwidth is not an issue.

Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Licensing Server

Hello

I am tasked with setting up 2 Windows 2012 R2 servers. These servers will be used for only 1 purpose each, managing Active Directory. I work for the government and regulations say that dedicated machines must be used. As the enterprise admin, I am covered because I simply log into our Domain Controllers and work there.

But these new server need to be built for other admins throughout the sub domain of ours. Each one of them own their own OU and have admin priv's to everything in those OUs. Before this, admins just used the windows admin pack and managed their ADUC through their desktop. Now these servers need to take that role, whereas the admins connect via remote desktop and manage their OU's.

I have the servers built and ready to go but I am trying to figure out how to setup the remote access. I know that out of the box Windows Server allow for 2 concurrent RDP connections. This is fine for most of what we do, except for this. We have about 2k users and maybe half that in devices.

I have never setup a RDP licensing server and cannot seem to find anything like this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd983943%28v=ws.10%29.aspx except for 2012 R2

Can anyone point me to a guide like this for 2012? Like I said, in my experience the 2 out of the box available per server have always been enough. But with the 1k+ users and devices, that wont cut it.

I know I need to purchase licensing etc, and if anyone can help me with that as well, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Windows 2000 Server - Built-in TS Per Device CALs

$

Hi,

We have a windows server 2008 installed, and server is already running, we can access the server via remote desktop access. However, we're still having problems with terminal services. License server has been activated already, but we were getting also "The licensing mode for the terminal server is not configured" message every time we logged in to server. So i assumed we just need to configure the licensing mode. And so, from Terminal Services Configuration, i clicked "terminal services licensing mode" and i set it to "Per User". Now the message "Licensing mode still not configured.." is now gone when i logged in to server. However, i get this warning on Terminal Services Configuration window:
"Terminal server is in Per User licensing mode, but license server does not have any Windows Server 2008 Per User TS CALs installed."

And when i checked from the TS Licensing Manager, and selected the server name, the details are:
TS CAL Version and type: Windows 2000 Server - Built-in TS Per Device CALs
License Program: Built-in
Total TS CALs: Unlimited
Available: Unlimited
Issued: 0

What does this mean? Should we set the TS licensing mode to Per Device instead of Per User?

Thank you.

Vanessa

RDS and RemoteApps without Active Directory

$

Hi,

I'm attempting to set up RDS on Windows 2012 R2. I'm getting all sorts of errors trying to set it up, and I think it may be because we run a Unix DC (and not Active Directory).

The terminal server/rds server will not use VDI. Just session based connections. Also want to use RemoteApps.

This is the setup
DC - Unix
RDS Server - Windows 2012 R2 running in a Hyper-V machine. The physical machine that hosts the virtual machine also runs Win 2012 R2. Both the host and virtual machine are on the same network as the DC.

Errors encountered:

  1. When setting up RDS through "Add or Remove Roles > Remote Desktop Services Installation", I receive:
"Unable to connect to the server by using Windows Powershell remoting"
  2. In RD Licensing Manager, it says:
"The system cannot determine if the license server is a member of TSLS Group on Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) because the AD DS cannot be contacted."
"The system cannot determine if the license server is registered as service connection point (SCP) in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) because the AD DS cannot be contacted."

Any suggestions?
(I've tried a lot of things....lost track of what I've done)

How will the license work? do i need to purchase 50 license or do i need to purchase 20 and 30 licenses for each server?

Thank you

Windows Server 2012

Not really a question but over the past 24hours had issues with Remote Desktop Connections locally and externally to a Windows Server 2012 R2.

Went through so many forums and nothing suggested the simple idea of uninstalling remote desktop services from the Server and then attempt to connect again locally.

If you rename a server AFTER you have installed remote desktop services on the server - then the connection will fail without errors. It will get to the 'Establishing remote desktop' part and then disconnected.

What you have to do is - uninstall the remote desktop services and then test RDP again. If it works then install the RD services via add/remove roles and then continue installing CALS if you have any.

Simple as that!

Cannot Logon with Smartcard over WAN connection

Hello everyone,

I recently installed a Win 2008 R2 server and a Win XP SP3 workstation.

I use a smartcard to login from the workstation to the server via RDP and it works great in LAN condition.

If I try the same thing over WAN connection (150/200 ms latency), it does not work.

After the "Reading Smart Card..." screen I do not receive the PIN screen and the RDP session close itself.

There are no errors or logs.

I guess there is a timeout problem.

Any idea ?

The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Hi Guys,

I am experiencing a problem with Remote Desktop Services running on Windows Server 2008 R2.  The RDS deployment is setup as a server farm with the following servers:

  • RD-SH-01 (Session Host)
  • RD-SH-02 (Session Host)
  • RD-SH-03 (Session Host)
  • RD-BROKER (Connection Broker and RD Licensing Server)
  • RD-REMOTEACCESS (RD Web Access and RD Gateway)

All servers in the farm are operating as normal however sometimes when a RD Session Host reboots or has no logged in users for a period of time, the User Profile Service starts rejecting login requests and returns the following error message:

The User Profile Service service failed the logon.

User profile cannot be loaded.

Due to the way the Connection Broker works in 2008 R2, a server failing to take logon requests correctly has the ability to take down the entire farm which is what my customer is experiencing in their environment.

The RD Farm is setup to use folder redirection and roaming profiles to ensure the user gets a consistant experience regardless what server in the farm they connect to. All servers in the farm are identical in system configuration, lockdown policies and RDS configuration which is mostly administered through Group Policy.

To resolve a failed session host a simple server reboot of the effected host is required.  Sometimes up to 3 or 4 reboots are required before the host starts taking connections normally again.  Also rebooting a session host for maintenance during for Windows Updates or other purposes may also introduce the problem.

This morning I had a call from my customer and the issue was occurring to RD-SH-01 - the server needed to be rebooted 4 times before it started processing user logons as normal.

I don't understand how multiple reboots magically resolve the issue, perhaps a system service is starting before another service which it is dependent upon?  Has anyone else out there had a similar problem?

Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
