server 2016 hang after installing RDS Role.

Windows 2016 std x64 10.0.14393

license server component is installed on domain controllers.

I installed the RDS role on this server, selected to install 'remote desktop session host'.

On the required reboot, server hung on please wait for the system event notification service' screen. After giving it about 20 minutes, had to reset the vm from the vmware console. When it finally came back online,  I could rdp into the server, but could not jump out to other servers. It would attempt to connect, request my password, then return to the rdp screen.  After removing the remote desktop session host from the server (also hung on restart again), I was able to successfully connect. Also, a restart also completes without hanging.

Ran thru this twice, and second time, the behavior was the same.  I'm not seeing any clues in the event viewer about what might be going on here.

suggestions appreciated -

Measure memory usage per process per user

We utilize a Remote Desktop deployment to provide a unified browsing experience for our libraries.  There are 115 clients involved hosted over 3 host servers.

While numbers per server are balanced workload is not. The presentation to the customer is via a browser which is in a kiosk mode.  I am wanting to even out the distribution of workload by balancing the "users" who generate the greatest activity wore uniformly across the host servers.  I can do this based upon the memory usage for the kiosk app process, which I can get a breakdown for but nothing I have found includes the "user" name.

Any help appreciated

rds per device

dears,

I need your assistance with the below, i was deploying rds server.

Configured rds hosts and rds brokers and rds licenses servers. I issued from the license server licenses per cal and per devices.

In the collection, i added a group that contains the users who are able to connect to the host.

After testing, more than one user were able to connect to the rds host therefore the testing was successful.

however when i went to test the per device cal, i did the following i added the server from where i want to access the rds host to the collection group created earlier. then i logged in to this device using anonymous user and tried to rdp the rds host from that server, however it returned an error : the connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login which is true, the anonymous user is not added to any rds group but the server from where he tries to access the host is added to the group.

I need to understand the per device scenario, can anyone help me with how it its tested?

best regards

RemoteApp keeps saying "Your credentials did not work"

Hi all,

I wonder if you could help me. I have deployed a new RDS server and everything seem to be in place. Its based on Windows Server 2016, and all licences applied, and certificate added.

Internally I can access it through the browser fine, but not externally (outside our LAN). Also everytime i try to add the server to Access RemoteApp and desktops, internally or externally, i get the message "Your credentials did not work".

This is a big project that i am working on and i find my self stuck.

So far i have tried:

  • GPOs to add TERMSRV/* and thumbprint
  • Bypass RD Gateway credentials for local addresses
  • SSL Certificate for RD Connection Broker Enable SSO, RD connection broker Publishing, RD Web Access and RD Gateway is the same.
  • Checked IIS for redirections and SSL (all off, tried on too)...all i could think of, but no luck.
  • Authentication policy is set via GPO as: allow delegating default credentials with NTLM-only server authentication and Allow delegating saved credentials with NTLM-only server authentication.

I am struggling to find a reason why it's not working.

Any help is much appreciated.

RDS 2016 Remote Desktop Services is currently busy

I am running a Server 2016 with RDS and it's mainly used for remote apps. Our users are getting the "The task you are trying to do can't be completed because RDS is currently busy" and looking at the task manager, there appears to be a stuck login which I cannot disconnect. When I attempt to end all processes for that stuck user, it still does not go away and I need to reboot the VM which kicks everyone off.

I am running the latest patches but I find that I have to restart the VM at least 3-4 times a week to allow our users to use their remote app when they work from home.

What could be causing this issue?

Enhanced Video Renderer - render failure in RDP session

$

Enhanced Video Renderer is used in my application.  It displays fine on Windows 7 thick client.  When this application runs on a Citrix server (Server 2016), EVR will not render at all, if the render window is on monitor 2 (right monitor).

Because Citrix runs on top of Terminal Services, we tried to check over RDP.  See the same symptom over an RDP connection.  Testing EVR capabilities using GraphEdit: EVR will render fine on Monitor 1 but not Monitor 2 (black window appears).  Without RDP, connecting over UltraVNC, there is no problem with EVR rendering on Monitor 2.  Another curious thing, is that if the graph is stopped, and the render window is dragged from one screen to the other, the window will render fine after the graph is restarted, so long as the window is at least 50% on the left monitor.  Seems like a rendering problem as the source filter is definitely not the issue.

Is there some reason for this to fail?  Is there any RDP configuration (or omission) that contributes to this problem.  Many thanks in advance for any knowledge on this.

RDP SSO on reconnect fails due to Network Location Awareness Identifying

$

I have found that when a RDP session that connects with Seamless SSO is interrupted, if the Network Location Awareness service decides to go into 'identifying' for even a half second, when the RDP connection goes to resume, SSO credentials do not work. However I have found that the times that the NlaSvc does not go into 'Identifying' then the connection will resume just fine. It appears that when its 'Identifying' even if I have the local policy set to 'Private' for Identifying connections, then SSO does not work. Is there a fix for this? Can RDP be made to wait or reattempt SSO credentials again automatically? The NlaSvc always goes back to DomainAuthenticated properly, even after half a second, but its still too late as RDP appears to have already tried reconnecting and fails to pass credentials at which point it prompts for a password.

I really need the reconnecting feature to work. Anyone have any ideas to solve this?

Publishing Remote Apps from Multiple Session Hosts

Hi guys, I'm coming from the Citrix world so I need to re-learn how this works, but I have a RDS server which is also a session host, and an additional session host. Both are in a collection called Test.

I have some software installed on both servers which I can publish. I have some software just on the main RDS/session host which I can publish, and some software just on the second session host which I can not publish.

I don't necessarily want to have to install the software on both. How can I accomplish this? I tried to create another collection and just add the second host but I can't because its already part of the first one I suppose. What do I need to be doing in this regard?

Thanks for any feedback.

RDS 2012 R2 / Session timeouts reset each time a new user log in

$

Hi,

We have set up ( with GPO) session timeout for RDS users :
- IDLE session : 1 hour
- disconnected session : 1 hour
- close session when timeouts are reached

But sessions never hit timeout because each time a new user logs in or an IDLE user reconnects, all IDLE session counter are reset to 0.

I am not able to figure out what is happening...

Does anyone have an idea ?

Read-Only Profile - Best Practice ?

$

Hi,

What is the best practice to configure "Read-Only" User Profiles ?

I used to configure Mandatory Roaming profiles and then change the source folder NTFS rights to Read-Only.

That way, each logon starts with the profile I had set. I mean I  don't want to retain whatever is in various Temporay / Downloads / Documents etc.. folders.

This does not seems to be the best approach :

- Using Windows 2016, I had to keep the cached profile because the default browser was not retained.

- In Windows 2019 server the entire  "Mandatory" profile feature seems currently broken to me  :

Long story short, my current workaround with Windows 2019 RDSH server is

- Make the mandatory profile folder Read-Only except for MandatoryProfiles\%username%\profile.V6\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Search which is set to Full Control

- Add AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications;AppData\Local\Microsoft;AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft to ExcludeProfileDirs (Windows Search is not compliant with Mandatory profile feature, hence the exclusion. Some software are misusing Appdata\local and localLow, hence the narrowing to local\Microsoft and localLow\Microsoft subfolders, because Microsoft is  cough supposed cough to be compliant with a feature it has designed...)

- DON'T rename USER.DAT to USER.MAN.

And live with the ugly message at logout "Your roaming user profile was not entirely synchronized"

So this is perhaps time to change for another approach....

Default printer changes randomly to Sybase DataWindow PS at RDS logon

Hi all,

Our users are experiencing random default printer changes after logging into our RemoteApp.

The default printer is randomly changed into Sybase DataWindow PS. Even though the default printer is set correctly at the client side.

Our setup is as follows:

8 x Windows Server 2012R2 RDS Session Host

RDS farm with a connection broker and Remote Desktop Gateway (on the same server)

Users connect to a RemoteApp session.

We are not using a printserver on our systems.

Any help that would point us into the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,

Mervin

Access denied rds farm

Best regard.

I have the following inconvenience, when trying to connect remotely to a server belonging to a farm. I receive this message.

"Cannot verify that the two remote computers belong to the same farm"

When trying to enter the server using the mstsc.exe / admin option I get the following error.

"The access to the requested resource has been denied"

The servers in the farm are server 2012 R2, the group of users who wish to allow remote access to these servers and are added to the local remote access permissions, if the user is an administrator, they can enter correctly. Also with permissions in the "collection"

Request your help to verify that users who belong to this group cannot access the server.

Thank you.

Two RDS Desktop collections on one rdbroker

$

I am in the process of migrating users off upd’s to fslogix profile containers in our RDS environment. It’s a standard RDS setup with one connection broker, 25 sessions hosts, rdweb and rdgateway servers. Users connect via wyse thin clients that pull the connection information from the wyse portal. All Servers are Server 2016.

I would like to publish another collection alongside the existing collection on the same broker, but this will not work due to having the DefaultTSVUrl pointing to the existing collection.

Is there a way to host two session host desktop collections on the same broker for internal access? I know this can be done for external access via rdweb and rdgateway. I have googled this for days and am getting nowhere

Installing RDS automatically using local credentials : Authentication issue : New-RDSessionDeployment : Validation failed for the "RD Connection Broker" parameter.

Hi all

I would like to setup RDS Session on new servers automatically.

The first step to join the server to the Active directory domain is ok

Now I would like to install RDS Roles Session automatically

When the server reboot, it runs a script using local admin account.

I know one need an Active directory account to deploy.

So I tried this :

    $user = "AD\User"    $pwd  = ConvertTo-SecureString "xxxxx" -AsPlainText -Force    $cred = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential($user,$pwd)    Add-LocalGroupMember    -Group "Administrators" -Member $user  | Out-File -Append $LogFile    Import-Module RemoteDesktop    #Enable-PSRemoting -Force    Invoke-Command -ComputerName $Env:Computername -ScriptBlock {                   $RDSSrvName = $Env:Computername + ".xxx.yyy.com"                   $LogFile = "$Env:ProgramFiles\Renault\RDS_Roles_setup.log"                   New-RDSessionDeployment -ConnectionBroker $RDSSrvName -WebAccessServer $RDSSrvName -SessionHost $RDSSrvName | Out-File -Append $LogFile    }     -Credential $cred # -Authentication CredSSP    $null = install-windowsfeature  -Credential $cred  RSAT-RDS-Licensing-Diagnosis-UI -LogPath $LogFile    Remove-LocalGroupMember -Group "Administrators" -Member $user  | Out-File -Append $LogFile

It returns

RDS 2016 second prompt for remoteapp

HI

I have deployed new RDS 2016 and share remote apps. After login through RDWeb I try to start any app and I get second prompt for credentials but there is information: The server's authentication policy does not allow connection requests using saved credentials.

I can start remote apps from another RDS on 2012 R2 from this computer without second prompt so I assume that something wrong on the RDS 2016 server. But what?

Cheers

Issues with RD Gateway and MFA

$

Hi All,

I am trying to configure multifactor authentication with Azure MFA on my remote desktop gateway. I followed this article:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/authentication/howto-mfa-nps-extension-rdg

All seems ok but it is not working as expected. When I try to access a remote desktop I get the notification on my phone. When I approve, the remote desktop keeps trying to connect and I get the notification on my phone 2 more times. Eventually the RDP just times out.

On my NPS server with the NPS extension I can see in the eventlog that access has been granted. On my remote desktop gateway in the NPS logs I can see this:

The RADIUS Proxy received a response from server X.X.X.X with an invalid authenticator.

Where X.X.X.X is my NPS server.

All servers are windows server 2019. My testuser has an Azure AD Premium P1 license (and an office365 business premium).

Any ideas on what could be wrong with my setup?

Remote Desktop Services has stopped working. (64-bit) ok on 32-bit?

Hello, having an issue where a user suddenly is experiencing the RDP program throwing an error and closing out. The last time this happened to a user, this was resolved by clearing out stale Windows credentials on the client.

I've done that, however still experiencing this issue.

I was able to connect through forcing 32-bit mstsc.exe and this stayed connected. However, we have a printer service that requires 64-bit so we need the 64-bit version of RDP to work.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Disconnecting RDP Session Causing Excel C++ Macro to Pause

$

Hi,

I'm kicking off an extensive Excel macro on a network machine via Remote Desktop Connection that takes roughly 50 hours to complete. The macro VB calls a DLL file to execute a chunk of code in C++ (I did not build it and am not well versed).  Running the macro in an active session works fine, but if I disconnect and return a good time later, I can tell the macro has made zero progress since when I disconnected from the session--I can tell from status bar communication in Excel.  Once I reconnect my session, the macro continues running like I'd never left and no error messages or code execution breaks messages to be found.

It gets weirder--I have 4 options of VMs to choose from, all of which have identical specs (Windows 10, 64-bit Office, 64-bit OS).  The macro will continue to run when I'm disconnected on only ONE machine. The only difference I can see on the one machine that's successfully running the macro, is that it's the least recent to have been rebooted (and therefore updated) of the lot.

I do not have local admin rights on any of the machines. Any incite would be greatly appreciated.

I'll caveat that I'm kind of a layman in tech speak; I apologize if I chose the wrong categories to post on.
