How to determine RDP version used in the remote session on the server?

Hi!

I need to determine the version of RDP used by connected client in the terminal session on Windows Server 2012 R2.

For Windows Server 2008 I found this solution:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8863a44e-9393-43f8-8c1f-6180eff08495/how-can-you-tell-what-version-of-the-remote-desktop-protocol-an-rdp-session-is-using?forum=winserverTS

But there is no RDS Manager where I can see session Status in Windows Server 2012 R2. How can I determine RDP version? With PowerShell maybe or something else?

Copy/paste of CF_HTML formatted content not working

$

Hello,

I did post this issue in a reply in another thread, but though best to create a new post for this issue.

I have a RemoteApp that uses CF_HTML formatted content and the only way this content can be copy/pasted from the app to the local user's computer is if drive redirection is disabled.

This issue affects Windows 7 machines but does work on Windows 10. So seems to point to a bug/limitation in the older RDP protocol.

RDS farm is Windows Server 2016.

Only info I can find online is: https://www.spicelogic.com/docs/WinHTMLEditorControl/KnownIssues/150

and this which only relates to Citrix: https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX221798

Is anyone able to shed any light on this issue and if there is any solution (other than just disabling drive redirection, which is far from ideal)?

Thanks,

One RD Licensing Manager for all servers

Hello,

I have several servers in my company and there is a need to connect remotely more users with multiple servers.
Example:
Server1.net.local has an offica installed
Server2.net.local has SQL SMS installed
The server3.net.local has Chrome installed
The server4.net.local is DC and wants to have an RDP license management server installed on it and on servers 1,2,3 to use the RDP license which is installed on the server 4 ( 20 RDP CAL User)
For example, as the first server logs in 3 users, on the second server 2 users, on the third server 4 users, on the fourth server 3 users and Additionally one user caller No. 1 has a simultaneous connection to server no. 1, 2 and 4, user of no. 2 has an open connection to server 1.3 and user no. 3 has an open connection to servers 1,2,3,4.
I still have 5 licenses on the main server for the available licenses.
The remaining servers connect only to the server managing the licenses and check whether they can allow the user to connect or the number of licenses has been used.

The point is that on each of the servers I have installed other software and needs each user to be able to simultaneously connect to more than one server.
However, the SH and Collections configuration consists in creating server farms including High availability (has one DNS entry to different IP addresses and unilaterally separates connections) so that you can connect to servers but you can not connect simultaneously to more than one server which is SH because when you try to connect to the other server, when you are connected to one of the servers, you get the message that the connection has been redirected to the first one and the next connection can not be opened.
I supported this movie:

I will be grateful for the help because I can not find out how it can be configured.

Launching an application in an RDS session automatically

I want to be able to launch an application inside an RDS session when the session launches while still being able to see the desktop. Is this possible?

I edited the remote desktop icon I downloaded from the Work Resources\RemoteApp and Desktops in RDWeb so only a desktop would show:

remoteapplicationmode:i:1 to i:0
...
alternate shell:s:||epds
remoteapplicationprogram:s:||epds
...
remoteapplicationname:s:EPDS

and removed EPDS from the last three

I would rather be able to launch the EPDS application and be able to expose the desktop simultaneously. Is this possible

If I have to reconfigure the Remote Desktop Connection icon, what are the steps to do this?

Add local users to Windows 2016 RDS collection

I have set up a 2016 Datacenter server (VM) and joined to an Azure AD domain, then set up RDS.  I've deployed an application as a RemoteApp and created a local user that I want to be able to run the RemoteApp.

Although I can add domain users and groups to the session collection, I cannot add local accounts - the only available location is the domain.

Is there any way to add local users and groups to the session collection?  If not (and I have to set up domain users for this) can I allow login without having the user enter the domain prefix to their login.  The Azure domain name is cryptic and was not intended for external use.

RD virtualization - Assigning IP addresses if IPpool exhausted

$

Hi all,

I have set "per session" IP virtualization on the windows 2012-R2 server.

My question is aboutthe behavior of IP virtualization if the range of IP addresses in the pool is exhausted.

Experiment description:

  1. Virtualization parameters used (3 addresses in the pool):
  2. 4 users are logged-in (last logged user1 has NIC address, because pool is exhausted):
  3. Logoff user with 104.0.2.51
  4. Login other (Administrator) user

As you can see - Administrator has obtained Nic IP address (192.168.56.1), although 104.0.2.51 was released in step c). I supposed that released address should be reused. But it is not. From this point only Nic address is assigned to the new users.

Q: Can server reuse the released virtual IP address for the next logged user instead of using Nic address?

Thanks for your answers

RDP logon takes 5 minutes

Hello,

I have a problem on several 2k8 servers: since a few days, when I get my hands on it in RDP the logon lasts 5 minutes. In the eventviewer I have: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the  ShellHWDetection service. And the same with the processes: Dnscache, CryptSvc, NlaSvc. the server reboot solves the problem but only for a few days. After that starts again, I tried among other things:
- Testing from another workstation
- Disabling the print spooler
- Disabled smart card printers, etc. in connection settings
- Disable antivirus software
- GPO : System\Logon\Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon (Turns off Fast Logon Optimization)
- No Active directory replication problems
- No DNS problem
- The servers are in the OU computers and my user in the OU users (so no GPO)

without success, not against when I connect directly to it (without going through an RDP connection) I have no problem.
Do you have any idea?

Thansk in advance,

C.

Hi,

We have a server 2016 With remote Desktop services. The server is live and everybody can login.

After installing the roles for terminal server everything was great till i update the server.

We get a message that the licence server is given and we have a grace period of 118 days left.

The licence server is activated with client cals.

When we add a collection and add the hostserver we get the error:

Property page: Update RD licensing failed: due to exception The licensing settings can not be set: "Invalid operation"

Has anyone a idea how to solve this ?

Thanks in advanced,

Start Menu Not Working Frequently for Users (RDS 2016)

$

Windows Server 2016 RDS setup with one DC and 3 session host servers, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer. This is a session-based deployment for RDP sessions.

On 2 of these servers, the Start menu does not work most of the time. Users logged in to RDS cannot use it. You click and nothing happens, not even after many minutes. Search function does not seem to work either at this time, so it might be a general UWP app problem.

Seems that it does work for a short time after a session host server has been rebooted but latest the next day it doesn't work.

I find lots of posts, mostly years old, on Windows 10 start menu not working but cannot necessarily apply the "fixes" in a RDS scenario. And most of them seem to say (years ago) that the latest Windows Updates fixed the issue. But it isn't fixed as of right now, July 2018.

What is the reason for this and is there any fix or handling for it?

RD License Server Not Issuing Licenses

$

Hi there,

I'm using Server 2016 and have built two Remote Desktop Services Servers.  I just was using the temporary grace period license and I was able to see my users through the RD License Manager.

I then added User CAL's to the RD License Server.  I made a mistake and returned these CALs and reborrowed them again from Clearinghouse.  Now the license server shows 60 CALs available and none issued.  It seems that all the users can log in and there are no issues from that end, but I want to be able to keep track of the CALs.

When I do an export of the report it says no CALs issued.  I tried to:

- Return the licenses
- Disable the RD License Server
- Remove the RD License Role
- Reboot
- Add Role
- Enable RD License Server
- Get license

and I run into the same issue.  I was hoping that I did not have to rebuilt the RDS role but I also don't want to run into the issue where somehow after a period of time (coinciding with the grace period) that this system stops working.

I also tried Local Group Policy to specify the RD LIcense Server and the Per User CAL setting and that still doesn't show the issued CALs changing....

Any ideas??

Hi, I've a 2012 R2 server in cloud, due to costs fees the server is a DC and have a RDS role on it. About 20 RDS licenses installed. The server is working fine since about 1 year. Simple rdp sessions not Remoteapps.

Yesterday i find a message "grace period of rds ts 2008 licenses is expired"...there aren't 2008 licenses...it is a 2012...all is working actually but this message make me a bit in alarm...

have you had that problem before? have i to check something??

thank you.

RDP stuck at "Configuring Remote Session" WS2016

$

Hi. We have a new WS2016 RDS deployment (VMs on Hyper-V):

 - 2x WS2016 RDGW in NLB

 - 2x RDCB in HA configuration

 - couple RDSH servers

The problem is that in 30-50% of the connection attempts via these gateways, the connection is stuck at the "Configuring remote session" message. The connection is never successfully estabilished when this happens and it is closed without any error couple minutes later. When you try again (or just immediatelly cancel the connection and reconnect), the connection may or may not go through.

When this problem happens, I can see there's single HTTP connection on the RDGW that accepted the connection with 0 bytes transferred in either direction. There are no related errors at this time.

Can anyone help? Btw. this problem also happens when connecting to a different single-host RDS deployment through these gateways.

I suspected the problem might be in the NLB, but removing either of the gateways from the NLB configuration (and from RDS farm) doesn't help, the issue is still there.

Rebooting the gateways helps for a short while (hours), but then the issue is back.

There are some other errors on the gateways, but these don't correlate to the connection attempts (event 210, source terminalservices-gateway: "Http transport: IN channel could not find a corresponding OUT channel" with no other details).

RDP clients are various ... W8.1, W10, Mac...

RDS 2016 Desktop icons flickers / refreshes

h all this is a re-post from spriceworks as I am truly desperate... :*(
https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1978620-rds-2016-desktop-icons-flickers-refreshes?page=1#entry-6779185

im having a bit of an issue with Server 2016 as RDSH. when user logs in the desktop icons keeps refreshing (the flicker).
the easiest way to recreate it is to create some text files (10-15) on the desktop then open a windows explorer window (to any folder it doesnt matter) and drag it around to different locations a bit. the flickering occurs when you release the mouse button.

ive downloaded the newest available ISO from MS and the server is fully updated.

the funny thing is that if the user opens folder options and re-applies the folder options settings (without changing anything) - the flickering stops!
unfortunately i could not find a way to trigger this upon user login...

some more info...

* i ruled out roaming profile as a cause - happens with local accounts as well.
* i switched storage to NetApp AFF8040 (AllFlash) to eliminate any network or storage related latency.
* roaming profiles are directly on a share on the NetApp (no DFS)

desktop still refreshing, but the funny thing is, if you open a notepad from the "run" and save your file to the desktop - the file does not appear unless you "trigger" a refresh as described in the first post

so its refreshing and flickering but not when the user saves files on the desk"Apple-converted-space">
now how messed up is that :D

fixes that didn't work for me:

files: delete %AppDataDir%\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer upon login (thumbs cache folder)
reg: NoRemoteChangeNotify - didnt work, flicker continues and desktop not refreshing
reg: delete bags (trying to force recreation of folder options)
Reg Delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU" /F
Reg Delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags" /F
Reg Delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags" /F
Reg Delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU" /F
Reg Delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU" /F
Reg Delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags" /F
Reg Delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags" /F
Reg Delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU" /F
gpo: user and computer:

App: i ran shexview.exe and disabled all non-MS extensions
AV: MS defender OFF

RDS 2016 - Start Menu freeze

$

Hi all,

We're currently experiencing issues at a random interval with regards to freezing start menu's on Server 2016 RDS Hosts.
When the freeze happens we can see the following items in the eventlog: Event ID 5973

Seems to be related on a per user base, as multiple users can connect to the RDS server but only a few of them are experiencing issues.

We are using User Profile Disks and Start Menu redirection. Any thoughts?

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: The RPC server is unavailable. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

RDS 2016 HA and SQL

$

Looking to add HA to an existing RDS 2016 environment for about 50 users. Obviously, for RDS HA, he SQL database becomes a single point of failure.

My question has to do with setting up SQL as a cluster as simply as possible, as this is a fairly small RDS environment.  Creating a SQL cluster requires shared storage, so I would like to use SQL 2016 Standard and the SMB shared storage option (avoiding SANs, iSCSI volumes, or even Windows Shared Storage Space.  To keep the network as simple as possible, I'd like to have the cluster nodes for SQL also be the SMB file share for the data.

I haven't specifically read that you cannot have a 2 node windows cluster with SQL Standard and an SMB file share installed simultaneously, and the SQL use that SMB share for the databases.  However, I would like confirmation on such a configuration before I spend time on it.

It just seems nutty and a resource overkill, not to mention only adds to the network complexity, to need to create yet another 2 node cluster just for the SMB file share for SQL to use.

Please advise, and thank you in advance.

Windows Server 2012 R2 - lost RD "Installed RDS Per Device CAL" licenses.

$

Greetings.

I work in an industrial facility, where we have several devices connected via RDS to a VM running Server 2012 R2.

This Monday (7/30/2018) a technician had to cycle power on one of the devices (a thin client) and when it rebooted it would not reconnect as normal.  This failure stopped production for nearly three shifts - which is pretty significant.

The Event Log entry said "RDP: No valid license available".  I logged on to the server and found that ALL of the licenses in the "Installed RDS Per Device CAL" group were gone - the group was empty - and that all the devices were now showing up in the "Temporary RDS Per Device CAL" group.  All the devices licensing in the temporary group were also expired.

After working with MS clearinghouse folks, I was able to figure out how to deactivate and reactivate the license server - and install new licensing - but I am now obligated to tell my management how we can prevent this from happening again.

So, my problem statement is something like: "At some point in early April (or late March", we 'lost' the retail purchase "Installed RDS Per Device CAL" licenses - and so, all the devices switch to temporary licenses.  When those temporary licenses expired, we were vulnerable to losing connection - should power be cycled on one of the devices.  We did, eventually cycle power on one of the devices - which shut the system down.

So, I am reaching out to Microsoft to help determine why the licenses just "disappeared".

Thank you!!!!
