VDI Shadowing of Windows 10 collection from Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi,

I have deployed VDI personalized collection of Windows 10 machines (Enterprise edition, x64, 1607 build) on Windows Server 2012 R2. But when I'm trying to use a shadow feature for a remote connection to one of the VDI VMs, I'm getting "Shadow Error: This computer name is invalid".

After a little of research, I found an article

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askperf/2013/10/22/windows-8-1-windows-server-2012-r2-rds-shadowing-is-back/

By using PowerShell command Get-RDUserSession | Format-List found from thereSessionID and ServerName, that I later injected in this command:

mstsc /shadow:SessionID /v:ServerName /control

After some testing, PowerShell doesn't recognizeGet-RDUserSession anymore, and gives an error:

Get-RDUserSession : The term 'Get-RDUserSession' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or
operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try
again.

+ Get-RDUserSession

    + CategoryInfo          : ObjectNotFound: (Get-RDUserSession:String) [], CommandNotFoundException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CommandNotFoundException

Server reboot doesn't fix the issue. Can anybody help how to resolve shadowing feature from the server?

Thanks

Why we dont have access to the RDS Listener and its properties in Windows Server 2016 / 2012 as we found its ease of manage terminal server properties in Windows Server 2008 RDS?

In Windows Server 2008 / R2 we had access to RDS Listener properties by choosing administration tools -> remote desktop services -> remote desktop session host configuration -> right click -> properties on the RDP-tcp connection. This help us in many way while we are in troubleshooting issues related to RDS service like recreate the listener, managing RDS configuration from one place. However in Windows Server 2012 / R2 / 2016 version those settings were scattered into different places and in case if i like to recreate the listener then the only feasible solution is to merge the registry key from a good machine. I used to recreate it easily if i have a Windows Server 2008 / R2. Do we have any other method to achieve the same? Also i like to know why the new interface is having such limitation?

Remote Desktop Service Session Host - Server 2016

I have a customer who would like to be able to run a 3D application on their Remote Desktop Session Host environment.
The have VMware 6.0 running on the hardware and are running two RDS Session Hosts servers on top of that.

I found that RemoteFX is supported by Server 2016 with Nvidia K1,K2,K5000,K6000 etc. cards.
I have read article about that it's possible to leverage GPU inside RDS Session hosts on

My question is. Is it possible to install a GPU for example Nvidia K1 and use that to leverage remotefx in server 2016?

Task Bar autohide fault

Hello,

I work for a company that provides terminal services using Windows Server 12 R2. We have an issue which I cannot replicate but users raise support calls over where by when they log in they find that the Task Bar disappears when they click away from the screen. This feature is the auto hide option. We have it set via GPO that users cannot personalise the desktop in this way. I have also tried to replicate it via keyboard function using either CTRL + ALT + I and Windows Button + I. I have found neither of these works. The only way to fix it is to either take the account out of the OU and log it on or fix it via registry key. One option I have is to put the registry key in as a GPO preference and let it set that way. However I would like to know what's causing this. I have not found much when I have googled it but cannot believe this has not happened to others in a similar setup. Please can you respond if you have come across this and if you have found the cause/fix. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Using an alternative name for a gateway server.

Apologies for the below but the network design it provided by another party and I am trying to design an RDS farm around it.

If I have an RDS farm that will be accessed from another network and so the gateway address is NAT'd.

The network design will have a primary route using one NAT address pointing to the gateway IP. A secondary DR route will use a different NAT address pointing to the same GW IP. Both primary and secondary use the same DNS so there will need to be separate A record for each NAT address.

So:

"A" record GW.CONSOTO.COM will point to the primary NAT (e.g. 10.20.30.11) which points to the GW IP (10.11.12.1).

"A" record GW-DR.CONSOTO.COM will point to the secondary NAT (e.g. 10.30.30.11)which point to the same GWIP (10.11.12.1).

While the farm is accessed via the primary route using the correct name all will be good. If the primary site is lost then the users would need to use the GW-DR name to access the farm.

I know the certificates are an issue but SANs should work around that. Right?

However the GW name is used in the RDP file from the Web Access will be the primary name that will resolve to the primary NAT address external network. Is there any way to configure RDS to attempt a number of names for the GW? So if the first is unreachable the second name is attempted?

To enable multiple RDP sessions for a single user in a terminal server

Hello Team,

In our environment, we have set a group policy setting from Domain Controller such that each users can have only a single RDP session to a terminal server.

But now we are having a requirement such as some users alone would need to have multiple RDP sessions for the same user account in the terminal server.

So could you please let me know if it's possible to implement the  below in anyway.

1. To create a group policy setting, such that user's of a particular group can have multiple RDP sessions for his user ID in the server

2. All the remaining users should have a single RDP session access alone to the server.

Server OS: Windows server 2008 / 2008 R2

Thanks in advance and please let me know if you require any further information.

Windows 2012 R2 RDS - Certificate mismatch questions

$

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this. Here's my setup :

- RDSH1 : Broker, Licence and Web Access server
- RDSH2 : Session Host server
- RDSH3 : Session Host server
- Internal domain : domain.intr
- External name : rds.something.ca

Our certificate is not a wildcard but it includes the "rds.something.ca" name. I tried using the "Set-RDPublishedName" script by entering the "rds.something.ca" name but i still had issues.

My question is about the DNS configuration needed to make this work. I already have a "rds.something.ca" DNS entry in a "something.ca" lookup zone that points to my Broker server. Do i need additional entries in this lookup zone for all the servers ? (ex. : "RDSH1.something.ca", "RDSH2.something.ca" and "RDSH3.something.ca").

And if so, do these need to be included in my certificate since it's not a wildcard ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks !

Server 2016 RDS 2 problems

$

Hi,

I set up a brand new domain with all 2016 servers that will have a RDS setup. I have 2 servers that have the connection broker role, web services role and session host role. Broker is setup in HA. DNS entries exist for RDCB and web services. Certificates in place and working. These are the 2 problems I'm facing:

1) I published an application that has a ini file in the same folder. When I startup the application on the session host locally, the config file is read and the app works as expected. When I start the application via web services, the ini file is not read and the application does not work correctly. When I create a batch file (and publish this) that starts the application and that contains a cd command to the folder where the application is located, then the app starts OK. However I then have the ugly command window that also starts. So it seems that RDS does not take the startup folder or working folder into account. There is no way to specify this when you publish an application.

2) When a user starts an application via web services, then closes the application and logs off from the web page, the session remains inactive on the session host. This is normal. However, when the same user logs back into the web page and tries to start the application again, he gets a message that the remote host is not available. When I clear his session on the session host, he can log back in and use the application without problems. I have a workaround in place that clears inactive sessions within 5 minutes but this is not practical.

These 2 problems seem to be specific to server 2016 as I tried to reproduce this in a server 2012 R2 environment where these problems are not occurring.

any help would be appreciated

RDS compatiblity issue

We are performing Upgrade project for Offshore facilities. There Windows Server 2008 R2 Operating system is going to be used for this upgrade. We need to deploy Remote Desktop Services in order to remotely login to Virtual Servers hosted by V90-machines.
Vendor currently is offering RDS User CALs 2016, which are not compatible with our Licence Server (2008R2) according to Microsoft tech support:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/compute/remote-desktop-services/rds-client-access-license#note-about-cal-versions

So one of the possible solution is to buy one Windows Server 2016 OS, and make it as License Server. However the rest of the system, including Domain Controllers, is going to be running on Windows Server 2008R2.
How feasible is this scenario? are there any important things to look at?

Second option is buy RDS User CALS 2012 instead of 2016 and downgrade them to 2008 R2 version.
Is there any risks accosiated with this RDS CALs downgrade?

Thanks, soonest response appreciated.

W2016 - RemoteFX setup for fluid video rendering and low cpu

Hi,

I noticed that w2016 RDSSH (virtual machine non-hyper-v) will uses twice as much cpu than w2008 r2 when rendering video. That's a big disappointement.

There is a RemoteFX GPO for W2008 R2 to set frame rate and video quality. I had set for a fluid video rendering (i.e. High frame rate and medium video quality). Watching videos is not at all the main purpose of my servers and the service is fair enough w/ w2008 r2.

Is there a similare setup for W2016 ? Or any other tweak to get fluid video and low cpu ? (Network bandwidth is not a problem. All clients are 100Mb/full)

RDS 2012 R2 - Windows Search crashing/zombie sessions

$

Hello,

I have a 2012 R2 RDS farm consisting of three session host servers.  I'm having a problem where the Windows Search service will crash at random and cause user sessions to not disconnect properly, leaving them in a zombie state with no username associated to the session owner.  This also prevents those users from logging back on; they see a "Please wait for the Remote Desktop Services..." message.  I have to kill the search service process in order for the zombie sessions to clear so the server can continue working normally.  Windows Search was installed to allow users to search from Outlook 2013 in cached mode (we use O365).  I've patched the servers up to the December 2016 update rollup, but I am still facing this issue.  Is there any guidance on how to troubleshoot this issue or possibly fix it?

Thank you.

Visual Basic application does not open images via Remoteapp

Hello all

We have the following scenario:

web < - > intranet <->RD farm (3 hosts) <->app server

When we are logged on the app and we try to open an image file from the app server, we got an error message saying the file can not be opened.

We have already turn the  server upside down and have not discovered what is going wrong.

Suspects on DLL incompatibility.

Thank you

Windows 2016 Server RDWEB - Office 2016 RemoteApp (access via Windows 10 Pro)

I have a Remote Desktop Host Session setup using Windows 2016 Server and install Office 2016 Standard on to the server. I configured RDWEB on the server for client that are using Internet Explorer in Windows 10 Pro to access all RemoteApp advertised via RDWEB.

The issue is that when I launch any Office Application (e.g. Word, Excel, etc), the windows of the app is in maximize state but it is not in full screen where there is a small gap on top and left side of the windows. The windows looks a little bit off and I can see the status bar is behind the task bar of the client machine (screenshot - hxxps://1drv.ms/i/s!AkDMTDPrqMYAhagiH1G0hmXD-7V2sA).

Other RemoteApp such as Internet Explorer, Paint, and all other 3rd party application works fine and get a full screen without the gap when maximize the application window. The only issue is with all Office 2016 application.

Note that I have tried to fresh installed all the component (Windows 2016 Standard Server, Office 2016 Standard and Windows 10 Pro) to avoid any other probability.

The issue does appear if I'm using the same setup / configuration but with Windows 2012 R2 Server as Remote Desktop Host.

Appreciate some help from the expert here. Thank you. :)
