Fail to create virtual desktop collection

I go with RDS quick install, and the wizard always fail at the last step saying "unable to create the virtual desktop collection. The process cannot access the file "\sever\RDVirtualDesktopTemplate" because it's being used by another process.

What's this problem? That folder was created by this wizard and I don't see other process that is using it. Also this is installed on my domain controller that has DHCP and DNS installed too.  Does that affect the RDS installation?

RDP stuck at "Configuring Remote Session" WS2016

Hi. We have a new WS2016 RDS deployment (VMs on Hyper-V):

 - 2x WS2016 RDGW in NLB

 - 2x RDCB in HA configuration

 - couple RDSH servers

The problem is that in 30-50% of the connection attempts via these gateways, the connection is stuck at the "Configuring remote session" message. The connection is never successfully estabilished when this happens and it is closed without any error couple minutes later. When you try again (or just immediatelly cancel the connection and reconnect), the connection may or may not go through.

When this problem happens, I can see there's single HTTP connection on the RDGW that accepted the connection with 0 bytes transferred in either direction. There are no related errors at this time.

Can anyone help? Btw. this problem also happens when connecting to a different single-host RDS deployment through these gateways.

I suspected the problem might be in the NLB, but removing either of the gateways from the NLB configuration (and from RDS farm) doesn't help, the issue is still there.

Rebooting the gateways helps for a short while (hours), but then the issue is back.

There are some other errors on the gateways, but these don't correlate to the connection attempts (event 210, source terminalservices-gateway: "Http transport: IN channel could not find a corresponding OUT channel" with no other details).

RDP clients are various ... W8.1, W10, Mac...

local disk/printers not accessible in remote desktop session

Hi, I have Windows 2008R2 with RDS and all updates installed.

When I'm connecting from any client I don't have local printers/disks in my terminal session. I'm able to open \\tsclient in terminal session, but it's empty. Also there is no errors in EventViewer.

I checked all GPO (many times), checked all settings in rdp-client, checked all settings in RDS HOST configuration. Everything looks fine.

Clipboard is working. Second server (w2003) in the same OU is working normaly.

could somebody help me?

USB LOCAL PRINTER NOT COMING - Windows 2012 Standard r2

Im doing some research, but the most of the material I've found is for old versions (Server 2003/2008)

Current Network

-

Server1 - Windows 2012 Essentials (DC, DNS, DHCP, AD)

Server2(Virtualized XenServer) - Windows 2012 Essentials (remote desktop only)

Laptop01 - Is my test hardware - W7 Pro

-

The connection comes from outside, and the firewall give a port forward through to internal ip (port 3389)

-

Basically I need 2 workstations accessing the server2 and printing in a local usb printer(ZEBRA GK420d), But my Remote Desktop is not showing my printers

Not successful attempts:

Turn on EasyPrint on Gpedit (Client/ Server)

Install Zebra Driver on Server2 (I installed the wizard, and I installed another printer (same model) from local network)

Framework 4.5 Installed on both(Server Client)

Printers box is ticked (Local resources)

User got administrator rights.

.

I got the "Fax" printer on local client, it's showing on the server as must be, also when I open printer properties, I can see the TS001 to TS012 ports, all empty and the the only in current use, is the "Fax(redirected)"

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

RDS 2016 - Licensing Issue - Per Device - Warning at user logon

Hello guys,

I'm building a new RDS farm on Windows Server 2016. 2 servers with connection broker, gateway, web server and licensing role (ha mode) installed and 4 session hosts - all on WS2016Standard.

Licensing is configured on both licensing servers - licenses per device are added on both and is integrated with AD. No errors or warning pop-up regarding licensing (though RD Licensing Diagnoser is no longer available in WS2016 apparently). Licensing servers are activated and integrated with AD.

We changed the licensing mode from per user to, per device (an initial mistake). For this change we rebuild the RD licensing database and re-added the per-device licenses. Next we changed the deployment properties 'RD Licensing' mode: we removed both lic servers and re-added them with per device licensing mode.

If we logon with our test users (5 of them) we all get this error. It states: "There's a problem with Remote Desktop Licensing - There is a problem with your license for Remote Desktop and the session will end in 60 minutes. Contact your system administrator to resolve this issue".

Just to be clear: no errors pop-up whatsoever in Group Policy, System, Application and Administrative Event Logs on the Terminal Servers and connection broker servers.

Any guidance on how i can troubleshoot this please?

Windows Server 2016 RDS forbid or remove powershell for defined usergroup

Hello everybody,

actually i'm trying to forbid or remove powershell.exe for a defined usergroup by using GPO's.

Unfortunately i didn't found an explicit setting for removing it for users and when trying to use AppLocker functionality it seems to damage the startmenu itself. When clicking on the Windows button as a restricted user (and even as non restricted Administrator) the startmenu wasn't displayed.

Does anybody know a working "HowTo" for keeping unauthorized users away from powershell without revoking NTFS permissions on the exe file?

Thanks for your help and kind regards.

Issues with presenting Powerpoints through RDS/Citrix

Hi all,

I was asked to post my question in this forum as well.

Original post here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/9fc2a784-9236-4f24-b5a7-14cafe9c42e2/issues-with-presenting-powerpoints-through-rdscitrix?forum=Office2016setupdeploy

I have stumbled upon an issue that I cannot find any other questions about. When in presenting-mode through Powerpoint 2016 in an RDS-environment, some slides(not all) does not update the viewed slide of the presentation. It either keeps the previous slide or it gives you half or a quarter of the background of the next slide. It does not update until you move forward and there is another action taken, like another entry of text or if you just move the cursor over the picture.

The problem only occurs when connecting to an RDS environment, with either a RDP client or Citrix and when running Office 2016, tested with Windows RDP/MSTSC and Citrix Receiver 4.5 from both full Windows and from thin clients. Problem does not occur in an environment with Office 2013, and I am not able to reproduce on a local machine.

Please can someone tell me what is going on?

Problems with connecting to RDP over VPN

Hello

I'm using Windows server 2012 R2 standard, the server is located on an ESXI 6.0.

I did a migration of SBS2008 to Windows Server 2012 with this manual https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/canitpro/2014/05/27/step-by-step-active-directory-migration-from-windows-server-2008-r2-to-windows-server-2012-r2/

I'm able to setup a PPTP VPN connection to the new server. I'm able to ping to the new server and to the old server aswell, when I'm connected via VPN. But when I want to go to the shares it doesn't work. (Can't find server on IP address) Also the remote desktop doesn't work via VPN.

I'm able to connect to the old server via RDP and file shares are reachable. I already disabled firewall and endpoint security, still that doesn't seem to resolve the problem.

[Edit]

I narrowed my problem down to the following:

I tracert to the server over the VPN and i get 2 replies:

Tracing route to 172.16.0.251 over a maximum of 30 hops

  1    26 ms    30 ms    35 ms  RDPSERVER [172.16.0.117]
  2    27 ms    32 ms    33 ms  172.16.0.251

When I try to RDP to .251 it doesn't work over VPN, but when I try to RDP to the .117 it does work. And that is the new RDP server.
In other words it is possible to make a RDP connection to the internal interface (the one I see in Routing and remote access), but it doesn't work to the Ethernet0 (with IP address .251)

RDP to the old server works over VPN. But I think the problem is something with the Routing and Remote Access, but I got no idea how to solve it.

If there are other things you need, just ask

Thanks for the feedback

Kind regards

RDS 2016 - Start menu customization and deployment not working

Hello guys,

I'm building a new RDS farm on Windows Server 2016. 2 servers with connection broker, gateway, web server and licensing role (ha mode) installed and 4 session hosts - all on WS2016Standard.

I wanted to customize the Start menu on the session hosts for each user - For Windows Server 2016 there isn't much guidance to be found, so i assumed the articles from Jeanie Decker on https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/windows/manage/customize-and-export-start-layout about customizing, exporting en re-deploying the Start menu on the session hosts with GPO's for Windows 10. ADMX files are imported in AD GPO store.

I created a Start menu with a test user, exported with Export-StartLayout, put it in a share and tested if the test user had access to the share and file: all tests ok. Created the GPO, tested the GPO with gpresult /r, and the GPO is applied: all ok.

The customized Start menu is not applied however. I've noticed that the User Config GPO states:

There are no errors in Event Log - Administrative Events, Application and/or System logs regarding applying or failing this. A gpresult /v gives me this output:

Anyone has any ideas why this is not applying? Or any other way to troubleshoot this issue further?

RDS 2016 - Behavioral change GPO security filtering?

$

Hello guys,

I'm building a new RDS farm on Windows Server 2016. 2 servers with connection broker, gateway, web server and licensing role (ha mode) installed and 4 session hosts - all on WS2016Standard.

I already have a RDS farm in production, based on Windows Server 2012 R2 (2 session hosts, 1 gw, cb, web server, licensing). This one has a few GPO's applied - all working as intended. The User Policies on this farm are scoped in security filtering to simply the user group. User Config GPO's are applying ok.

On my 2016 farm however, when i only have a user group in security filtering, the GPO is not applying. It is only applying User Configuration when i alsoadd the farm servers to the security filtering of the GPO.

Is this change intended due to changed security policies in Windows Server 2016?

With kind regards,

Sven

Limit of only 5 RDS at once

Hello!

I recently installed Remote Desktop Services on DC. I have server1 which is a RD connection broker, session host, also web access is configured. DC is RD licencing server. Both servers are running on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.

It looks like everything is configured properly - server1 is getting licence from DC, there is no error or any warring on server1. However, I can only connect 5 users at once to the server1. Using RDC user number 6 would be stuck on the window

Connecting to: server1. Configuring remote session...

However this remote desktop session is never established and all I can do is cancel the window. Total licences is 50 and currently there is 17 available. I even tried to create test session collection and that results in having same issue.

Does anyone have same/similar issue?

Many Thanks,

Share RD sessions between two servers?

We have two RD servers, we had it setup so that when someone logs on to rds1 it will push the second login to rds2 then server 1 for the third person and so on.

I honestly can't remember how to perform this task, could someone enlighten me?

The response was mild so to say so I thought I'd try my luck here.

Dot.NET Application has issues since applying either of KB3207752 or KB3212646

First time poster!!

We have an Dot.NET application which is show issues since applying either KB3207752 or KB3212646.  Without these updates applied the application works without issue.  Once either of the updates are applied it results in a real slowdown of the display rendering the product unworkable.

Has anyone had any experience of the above and if so have you been able to resolve it?

Multiple BACKUP-0 Folders on 2012 R2 Terminal Servers using UPD

Since moving to user profile disks (UPD) on Server 2012 R2 we've noticed that when users are disconnected there is something that is not allowing the user profiles to fully dismount causing a lot of BACKUP-0 and BACKUP-1 folders in the C:\Users directory.

What can we do to identify what is causing this and resolve it?

Thanks

Windows Server 2012R2 - Users cannot change an expired password via RDP in Windows, rdesktop Linux works perfectly

I realize this question/issue has been raised before. I have read the following thread regarding this:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/677b39dd-8595-4334-b7e5-387c8ff230ec/can-users-change-expired-passwords-via-rdp-to-windows-server-2012-r2-windows-81-if-nla-is?forum=winserverTS

First, the workarounds (which are a poor course of action to take due to lowering security) have not worked for me.

Second, I can confirm that this problem does NOT happen when using another remote desktop client. I have tried 'rdesktop' from a Linux machine, and everything works properly. Users are presented with an option to reset their passwords if expired right in a remote desktop session.

Network Level Authentication is disabled. Given that another operating system (and RDP application) does not have this problem, a registry 'hack' should be unnecessary to resolve this. Has there been any acknowledgement from Microsoft of this problem and is there a fix in the works?

The RD Connection Broker server is not available or the relevant services are not running

I currently have a single RDS server, running on Windows Server 2012 with the following RDS role services installed:

RD Licensing
RD Web Access
RD Gateway
RD Connection Broker
RD Session Host

The problem I'm having doesn't occur consistently but it's annoying to say the least.  At times when I go into the Server Manager to manage various aspects of RDS such as looking at what users are currently connected, I get the following error:

"The RD Connection Broker server is not available or the relevant services are not running"

I check and find that all RDS related services are running just fine, but restarting them doesn't solve the problem.  It takes an actual server reboot in order for this error to go away and then it returns, but there is no set time frame on when this happens as its very random.

No searches on Google have given me a good place to start looking at resolving this, so I'm hoping someone on the forums can give me some help...thanks in advance.

Error Printing via RDS (Win32 error code returned by the printer processor: 122. The data area passed to a system call is too small.). Help!

Good afternoon,

I am looking for assistance with the following problem when trying to print to a client redirected printer (on another subnet), when connected to RDS (Windows Server 2012 R2).

We have found that the first time you print to a redirected printer on the RDS box, it will print correctly at the client printer, however after you log off, that's it, you're unable to print to this printer again from within an RDS session on the RDS box, and it logs the following event in the Print and Document Services each time you try.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The document Print Document, owned by <user>, failed to print on printer <printer name> (redirected 2). Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler.
Data type: RAW. Size of the spool file in bytes: 42449. Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: \\<domain>-RDS. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 122. The data area passed to a system call is too small.

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Admin

Source: PrintServiceLogged: 29/07/2014 10:31:38 AM
Event ID: 372 Task Category: Printing a document
Level:Error Keywords: Classic Spooler Event, Document Printing
User:<domain>\<user>Computer: <computer name>
OpCode:Spooler Operation Failed

More Information: Event Log Online Help

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The print job enters, and disappears from the print queue on the RDS, however it does not enter the print queue on the client machine, and logs the attached message.

Have tried printing again, and restarting the printer server, to no avail.

Any help with finding a solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Matt
