Fail to create virtual desktop collection

$

I go with RDS quick install, and the wizard always fail at the last step saying "unable to create the virtual desktop collection. The process cannot access the file "\sever\RDVirtualDesktopTemplate" because it's being used by another process.

What's this problem? That folder was created by this wizard and I don't see other process that is using it. Also this is installed on my domain controller that has DHCP and DNS installed too.  Does that affect the RDS installation?

Enable multiple user remote desktop

Hi

I installed one windows 2012 server in the company. I didn't install Windows Remote Desktop components. I simply went to local group policy-> Windows components> Remote desktop service->Remote desktop session host->connections and enabled 6 sessions in "Limit number of connections"

The server is domain joined. so my questions:

1. Will it accept more than 2 active remote access

2. Do i need additional license?

Limit of only 5 RDS at once

Hello!

I recently installed Remote Desktop Services on DC. I have server1 which is a RD connection broker, session host, also web access is configured. DC is RD licencing server. Both servers are running on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.

It looks like everything is configured properly - server1 is getting licence from DC, there is no error or any warring on server1. However, I can only connect 5 users at once to the server1. Using RDC user number 6 would be stuck on the window

Connecting to: server1. Configuring remote session...

However this remote desktop session is never established and all I can do is cancel the window. Total licences is 50 and currently there is 17 available. I even tried to create test session collection and that results in having same issue.

Does anyone have same/similar issue?

Many Thanks,

RDS 2012 R2: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the (name-of-service) service

Hi guys,

On a random base (daily, weekly) we're experiencing major log-in problems on our Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services farm. The VM's are hosted on Hyper-V 2008 hosts and we're not using Citrix techniques etc.

Users are reporting that they cannot log-in, the log-in sessions hangs with a blank screen when loading their user profile (e.g. Please Wait For The User Profile Service).

In the System event log of the server on which the user is logging on the following errors are shown:

Source:        Service Control Manager
Date:          23-12-2014 7:28:01
Event ID:      7011
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Description:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after 30 (or sometimes 60) seconds, the same error only another service (in random order):

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after exactly 30 seconds, the same error only another service:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UxmSms service.

etcetera, with the following errors:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AudioEndPointBuilder service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the WPDBusEnum service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service.

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrkWks service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

These errors are logged continuously.

An administrator cannot solve this since he isn't able to login in as well (console or remotely), only a hard reset of the VM is possible to use the affected server again.

I took different steps to solve this problem without any success, like:

- Installing the latest Windows updates
- Removed unnecessary printer drivers, print monitors and print processors (no local printers/drivers are installed, only Remote Desktop Easy Printer driver is used)
- Searched different forum posts, but found only hotfixes for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Can someone please help me with this annoying problem?

Many thanks!!

EDIT:
Of course is increasing the time-out not really an option here... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13765.event-id-7011-service-timeout.aspx

PCI Compliance on Server 2012 (RDS/RemoteApp)

Hi

I'm really hoping some kind folks can assist me.

I've got a failing PCI scan, port 3389 and 443 and both of these relate to Remote Desktop Services / RemoteApp, i have in the past (within last 3 months) applied some updates to the server and Windows 7 clients, but last time i tried to disable TLS 1.0 via an app (IIS Crypto) it warned is would break RDS and it did but only for the Windows 7 clients.

I've tested my Windows 10 and it connects on TLS 1.2 and this is WITHOUT disabling TLS 1.0

Now one thing i found the IIS Crypto is now v2.0 as i was using v1.6 before so this may work when i use the app to remove 1.0, now my question is there anything i should check first??

Should i use pci31 (as below)

pci31This template is used to make your server PCI 3.1 compliant. It will disable TLS 1.0 which will break many client connections to your website. Please make sure that RDP will continue to function as Windows 2008 R2 require an update

I've attached a couple of images for reference.

Thanks

Windows Server 2012R2 - Users cannot change an expired password via RDP in Windows, rdesktop Linux works perfectly

I realize this question/issue has been raised before. I have read the following thread regarding this:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/677b39dd-8595-4334-b7e5-387c8ff230ec/can-users-change-expired-passwords-via-rdp-to-windows-server-2012-r2-windows-81-if-nla-is?forum=winserverTS

First, the workarounds (which are a poor course of action to take due to lowering security) have not worked for me.

Second, I can confirm that this problem does NOT happen when using another remote desktop client. I have tried 'rdesktop' from a Linux machine, and everything works properly. Users are presented with an option to reset their passwords if expired right in a remote desktop session.

Network Level Authentication is disabled. Given that another operating system (and RDP application) does not have this problem, a registry 'hack' should be unnecessary to resolve this. Has there been any acknowledgement from Microsoft of this problem and is there a fix in the works?

2008 r2 Terminal Session user issues

I have begun getting ts hangs on multiple servers that had run for a quite awhile without issue. The problem is the system just becomes unresponsive to certain tasks.

For instance if I am logged in as admin and users state system is frozen, I can still function within my session as can some others. However, if I open taskmgr and click on users tabs it locks up. None of the usual tools quser, qwinsta will return any data. tasklist and taskkill also hang.  I even built a brand new ts2008rs ts on a 2016 physical box and the issue has crept in. I do have 3 in another location and they are not experiencing the issue. I have also run av and other scans to no avail.

Any thoughts?

Mstsc log off session

Hello.

I have 2 types of computer (15 machines in all) under windows 7 pro 64 which connect in TSE on a Windows Server 2012 via scheduled tasks at 8h55 and disconnected in the same way at 9pm.

One of these types of post (7 machines out of the 15) disconnects in case of inactivity on the server.

I realize this by doing a "Query session" on the server.

I checked in:

Application logs and services \ Microsoft \ Windows \ TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager \ Operational on a Sunday when all compurter are inactive.

The session log off occurs after 2h - 3h - 4h never the same but always round hour (not 1H15 min..)

The Gpo server side is the same for everyone so I deduce that it does not come from the server.

I have of course set my power modes by removing the hard drive / shutdown.

If I take control of a computer client with Teamviewer that "query session" show log off, i seemy session server screen but nothing reacts and finally the screen change and ask me for my login / password session.

So the mstsc doesn't close but it end connection after round hour time.

I tried a scheduled tasks that ping an ip every 30 min but doesn't change anything.

Any suggestion ?

Sorry for my bad english

To enable multiple RDP sessions for a single user in a terminal server

Hello Team,

In our environment, we have set a group policy setting from Domain Controller such that each users can have only a single RDP session to a terminal server.

But now we are having a requirement such as some users alone would need to have multiple RDP sessions for the same user account in the terminal server.

So could you please let me know if it's possible to implement the  below in anyway.

1. To create a group policy setting, such that user's of a particular group can have multiple RDP sessions for his user ID in the server

2. All the remaining users should have a single RDP session access alone to the server.

Server OS: Windows server 2008 / 2008 R2

Thanks in advance and please let me know if you require any further information.

RDS more active sessions than licenses

$

hi all,
*********************************
Windows Server 2008 R2
Workgroup configuration
Remote Desktop Services
License program: Volume license
Total licenses: 6
*********************************

What is strange is that I can see 9x active sessions on the server, so do not know how this is possible.

I cannot run a report as it is Workgroup environment. Grace period has ended.

When you logon to RD License Manager I can see the "Issued" column as "-". I would be expecting the RDS server issuing the available 6 licenses.

License Diagnosis shows: "did not identify any licensing problems for the Remote Desktop Session Host Server."

Nothing on event viewer to suggest misconfiguration or anything.

I am really confused as to how 9x active connections can be established on a 6x license node.

Assistance is much appreciated.

Prevent Users from Editing Remote Application

After creating application from the RD Application Manager, how can I prevent the users from seeing/editing the client?

For example, if I create the .rdp file, he can open in notepad, view/edit the settings. How can I prevent the user from this?

Also what is the best way to restrict the user from accessing C, D drive and desktop?

Launch different programs based on device name when user logs onto a remote desktop host server.

Environment: Windows Server 2012 R2 full remote desktop sessions.

Active directory users connect to our remote desktop farm from multiple devices e.g. laptops, desktops, and handheld scanners. Laptops and desktops are domain joined running Windows 7 and 10. The handheld scanners are running Windows CE and not domain joined.

We've previously used the Environment tab in Active Directory to launch a specific program on logon. However, we now have multiple programs which need to run on logon.

Is there a way to a launch specific program in the same manor as using the environment tab in AD, which is dependant on the hostname of the device they are connecting from?
For example, if an single AD user connects from a computer name which starts HANDHELD, launch executable1, if computer name starts HANGGUN, launch executable2, anything else login normally (full remote desktop session).

Many thanks in advance.

RDS 2012 R2 IP virtualization - IP-addresses are no longer being recycled after applying security patch MS16-111

Hi

We are using IP virtualization and we have recently found out that after applying security patch KB3175024 (MS16-111 Description of the security update for Windows kernel: September 13, 2016) the virtual IP addresses are no longer being recycled i.e. I login and get virtual IP X.X.X.1, log out, login again an get virtual IP X.X.X.2. This continues until the last configured virtual IP x.x.x.254 and then the server runs out of IP addresses even though I am the only user.

After uninstalling the offending patch KB3175024 (MS16-111 Description of the security update for Windows kernel: September 13, 2016) virtual IP addresses are being recycled again, i.e. I login and get virtual IP X.X.X.1, log out, login again an getvirtual IP X.X.X.1.

The RD Connection Broker server is not available or the relevant services are not running

I currently have a single RDS server, running on Windows Server 2012 with the following RDS role services installed:

RD Licensing
RD Web Access
RD Gateway
RD Connection Broker
RD Session Host

The problem I'm having doesn't occur consistently but it's annoying to say the least.  At times when I go into the Server Manager to manage various aspects of RDS such as looking at what users are currently connected, I get the following error:

"The RD Connection Broker server is not available or the relevant services are not running"

I check and find that all RDS related services are running just fine, but restarting them doesn't solve the problem.  It takes an actual server reboot in order for this error to go away and then it returns, but there is no set time frame on when this happens as its very random.

No searches on Google have given me a good place to start looking at resolving this, so I'm hoping someone on the forums can give me some help...thanks in advance.

RDS Windows 2012 SSO question

$

Sorry mods; posted this originally in Win10/Security first but the question may be more relevant here?

Hi,

We're running the following:
*Win 10 Ent 1607 (Current Servicing Branch)
*Win 2012 RDS that is accessed by internal users only.

Issue:
SSO works fine from either a deployed published shortcut or via the Web Access server. However, as soon as Credential Guard is enabled SSO fails. Has anyone else come across this?

Thanks,
Kevin

In Windows 2012 R2 RDS how to specify same configuration option as on Remote Desktop Web Access Configuration page in 2008 R2 RDS

$

Hi,

I recently upgraded my TSG server from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2. Everything seems to be working well except for one issue. In the 2008 R2 RDWeb page, I could go to a 3rd tab named "Configuration". This tab was the Remote Desktop Web Access Configuration page and said this:

You must configure RD Web Access to provide users access to RemoteApp and Desktop Connection. Use these settings to specify the source that provides the RemoteApp programs and desktops that are displayed to users through RemoteApp and Desktop Connection. Users can access RemoteApp and Desktop Connection through the Start menu on a computer that is running Windows 7 or through the RD Web Access Web site.

On this tab I would select the "One or more RemoteApp sources" option and then enter "localhost" for the source name.

This allowed me to use the Remote Desktop tab on the RDWeb page to connect to any internal terminal server.

So how in my new Windows 2012 R2 TSG server do I specify this option?

Thanks in advance,

Nick
