When attempting to Shadow on 2012 R2 RDS we get an Unspecified error

We have built a Windows server 2012 R2 RDS server, and setup the whole deployment on one server, Gateway, Broker, licensing, session host, and collection.

But when we go to shadow the user using Server manager or command line mstsc /shadow:n when get this very helpful error:   Unspecified error in a Window called Shadow Error

I have tested Shadowing on another networks server with a similar setup and it works fine, only difference is the Active directory server are 2008 vs this one that doesn't work being 2003.

I have also tested using local accounts and still get the same error, and there is not a lot on the web regarding this error and RDS shadowing

Hi,

Been encountering a problem... i am setting up a windows 8 image for my VDI environment and the loading process is exceptionally slow. I realised from event log that it seems to take abit more time trying to load the windows store apps...

question - is there anyway not for Windows Store to load the apps and taking up so long in login time? My collection is a pooled collection so my users are always first time user on the image.

thanks!

Help...

My setup main office - ASA5512-x. Disaster Site ASA5512-x. 3 other sites - RV325 IPSEC VPN in hub and spoke config to the main office.

Issue I am having is with our Microsoft Remote Desktop Services 2012R2

When the main office is using the ASA we have random disconnects to microsoft rds to all remote users (not only through vpn) except for the disaster site.

I removed the ASA and used a spare RV325 which solved the disconnects for all remote users except then the disaster site was experiencing the disconnects.

What am I missing? Please help I've been battling this issue for months.

Memory Problems with Remote Desktop Services (RDS) on windows server 2012R2

We have 2 RDS 2012R2 host servers one with 92 GB of RAM and one with 184 GB RAM - we also have similar servers with just windows server 2012R2 (no RDS) with the same memory available.

We have a large application which we need to run on the RDS servers in multiple sessions - this app is capable of using large amounts of RAM but on the RDS servers each session only appears to be able to access 2GB of RAM.

We run one session on each of the RDS servers and on each machine only 4 GB of RAM is used when we run the application.

If we run the same application on the non-RDS servers they use 62GB and 154 GB respectively (not sure why they aren't using all the memory but they complete their runs in good time)

I cant find any reference to a memory limit or a per session limit on 2012R2 RDS servers but no matter what we do we cant persuade the app to use more memory - I have checked and it is definitely the 64-bit version of the app - in fact it is the same install as on the non-RDS servers.

Perfmon shows no limitations on any other resource - all servers use about the same CPU, etc. The non-RDS servers use more Paging File reads/writes.

Any pointers on where to find this limit and how best to change it - we only want 4-8 users per box maximum but are testing with 1 user session at present.

thanks

Open file with RemoteApp, file association problem on Windows 2012 R2

Hello everyone,

I'm doing a solution for RemoteApp. Based on the question asked in this thread:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4e50bfed-d3c1-4a33-a207-3c25b808ee99/open-doc-file-with-word-via-remoteapp?forum=winserverTS

I want to make a RemoteApp published on the server, and from the local machine, when right click on a document file (Word, Excel, PDF or any type of document file) there is an option (context menu) to open that file with the RemoteApp published on the server (the RemoteApp will detect the file type and do the job) . I'm testing the solution with Excel, Word, .txt, .pdf it works fine. However, when I try with .bmp (and .png too), the default associated program on the server (Windows 2012 R2) is mspaint but I always get the error "Network error, cannot access to \\tsclient\c\Temp\myfile.bmp" , but that's not possible because other text, word, pdf files are in the same folder and all work very well. I think the problem is the file association with bitmap file. In the registry on the server, I have seen the .bmp has been mapped with a key like PBrush, that was the old Paint Brush program in the very first versions of Windows, I think.

Do you have any idea how to fix the problem file type association with mspaint program on the server (Win 2012 R2)?

Thanks a lot

This happens only when using RemoteApp from android device. When using same RemoteApp from Windows PC there is no problem. Any ideas how this can be fixed? This started few months ago and previosly everything worked.

Is it possible to display a hyper-v VM using a subset of the monitors of the system being used to connect to the VM ??

I am trying to configure a 911 dispatch console.  The dispatchers have one main application that they dispatch from and a bunch of peripheral applications that they use for support (think outlook, internet etc...).  We have had several instances where the peripheral applications have caused problems with the CAD (computer aided dispatch) software.  To prevent this, I am wanting to install a hyper-v virtual machine on the Windows 10 computer that is running the CAD software.  I will then load all the peripheral applications onto the virtual machine.

In order for the dispatchers to quickly see the information that they need, we have 6 displays connected to the physical computer via 2 NVidea NVS 510 video cards (3 monitors attached to each video card) which each contain 2GB of RAM..  We would like to have the virtual machine come up on two of those 6 and leave the other 4 for the CAD software.  However, I can run the virtual computer on all 6 monitors or only on 1, but not a subset of the 6.

I have added the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter to the virtual machine and configured it with a maximum number of monitors = 2, set the max resolution to match the resolution of the monitors the VM will be displayed on and maxed out the memory.  When I attach to this VM with more than 2 monitors attached to the system I remotely connecting from, only one monitor is used to display the VM.  If I change the minimum number of monitors to the number of monitors attached to the computer I am remotely connecting from (6), the virtual machine comes up on all the displays as expected; however, this will not work as the dispatchers need to quickly see information on both the CAD software and the peripheral applications (VM system).

Can anyone confirm for me that this is a limitation of RDP/Hyper-V or if I have something configured incorrectly?  In other words, has anyone been successful in using RDP or another software (if so what) to connect to a virtual machine using a subset of the number of monitors on the system being used to access the VM?

I have tried simplifying the configuration, using only 1 video card, attaching 3 monitors, setting the max number of monitors for the VM to 2 and connecting.  This simplified configuration does the same thing… when connected via RDP or the Hyper-V manger, it only displays with one monitor. If I change the max number of monitors to 3, the VM will display on all 3 monitors.

As a side note, I have been testing with VirtualBox and I have been successful in getting this configuration to work but I would prefer to use Hyper-V for multiple reasons.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!/responses!

Hi!

I have configured a Windows 2012 R2 server with Terminal server. Everything works as it should. I tried a user test to login in TS, it works, there was a license assigned. However, I cannot revoke the user, so we have 1 license stuck for 60 days?

How can I remove this user license?

Thanks

RDP screen go black after 10 min

We have a thin client that makes connection with a Terminal Server 2008 R2 RDP server.
The client opens a web page on a screen to display statics while the people are working. The strange thing is when after 10 min nobody touch the mouse or keyboard, the screen go black. When someone touch a button on the keyboard, the screen is there again. How can I disable that the screen go black?

Thanks.

RDWEB site shows only white page after login

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a lab environment for testing purposes of Remote Desktop Services and RemoteApp. I am following the instructions from "Mastering Server 2012 R2" book from Mark Minasi.

I successfully installed the Remote desktop services roles (RD Session Host, Connection Broker and Web Access)

I created a session collection and then published a few programs to test the remoteapp from browser.

BUT, when I open the rdweb site locally (https://localhost/rdweb) I first get the obvious certificate warning. Then I get the Windows authentication login prompt which says: "The server localhost is asking for user name and password. The server reports that is is from Digest."

Then I try to login with account who has access rights to collection but I get only blank white page.

Also when I try to access the website from another server with the address https://hostname.domain.local/rdweb I get the HTTP 404 error after login.

Tried also to login with DOMAIN\Administrator account but then the login prompts keeps popping up and no error messages. I have also Domain Admins group selected in collection user groups.

I tried removing IIS role and RDS roles and reinstalling them but no luck.

Thank you for your help!

Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server.  Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

Windows Network Authentication - Error 4625

I'm running into an error when a particular Windows Domain is trying to access a website on my server - let's call it the ABC domain. According to users in this domain, the website prompts them to enter their Windows credentials. After 3 attempts, it brings them to a blank screen.

I've added the domain (ABC\Domain Users) to the Users group (under Edit Local Users and Groups in Windows) which should have access to the network according to the Group Policy. I've edited security permissions at the site level in IIS to give read permission to this domain group.

I'm relatively new to Windows Authentication, but I have searched and searched to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I want to use Group Policy to set the default printer for my users

I am trying to set default printers for users on my RDS.  The users are set to logon, however their session executes an application and the users do not normally have access to the desktop on the RDS.

I established a GPO to set the users default printer and have been attempting to link it to OU's to which the users are members.

In each case I am receiving an error Event ID 4098 with a 34305 qualifier.

Terminal Server displays black screen and won't let people join the TS farm

$

We have had an ongoing problem affecting all of our terminal servers in a TS farm at random times and not all at once.  It doesn't seem to be a problem with the individual servers but a roaming issue that causes the entire farm to stop serving sessions. There are a couple event ID's that show up in the RDS on the server:

Error 36: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager: An error occurred when transitioning from DisconnectedLoggedOn in response to EvConnected. (ErrorCode 0x80070102)

Error 1152: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager: Failed to create KVP sessions string. Error Code 0x8007007A

The only way to allow the TS farm to start allowing connections is to reboot the problem server at that time.

RDP into Black Screen then Disconnects 2012 R2

$

I have several servers that the last few weeks all randomnly have started causing connections via RDP to go to black screen for about 10-15 seconds then close the session.

I have checked roll up updates such as KB2887595 are installed, I can console into them from my VM Console, however RDP does not let me in unless a full Reboot occurs, sometimes multiple times.  The fix may be temporary for a few hours, but may quickly revert back from not allowing new connections to log in.

These servers are part of a collection farm, I have disconnect sessions set to 1 minute, idle set to 15 min, active set to never for the connection properties for these farms.

I am at my wits end, cause I have roughly 6-8 servers all behaiving the same way with roughly 600 users hitting this set of servers on a daily basis, this is overflowing my help desk guys and I need a fix or solution...like last week.

Please help!
