Automatically Pin shortcuts to the taskbar for all users on a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server

I am looking for a way to automatically pin shortcuts to the taskbar (or start menu) for all users on a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server.

I have got this working for installed programs (e.g. word / excel / outlook / explorer etc) using the PinItem.vbs script as documented in a number of places, including here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/28239.how-to-manage-windows-taskbar-items-pinning-using-group-policy.aspx

However, I have not been able to get this to work for for shortcuts to items that are not installed programs with an .EXE

For example,

  1. shortcut to a mapped drive
  2. shortcut to an application that is executed from a shared folder on the network
  3. shortcut to a java application 

Any help much appreciated

Remote Control Issues - Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1

Hello, I have configured the settings for remote control using Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration to not ask for user's permission but I still keep getting the "requested session denied remote control" display once I try to connect (i.e. the console is still being asked for permission). I have even tried to configure the above settings in Computer Configuration using gpedit.msc (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Connections\Set rules for remote control of Remote Desktop Services user sessions) and tried many other things after reading countless blog but nothing works. Please help !!

How to allow Multiple RDP Sessions

I have a Terminal server windows Server 2012 that connects to our Business system also running on a different Machine with windows Server 2012, I want to allow multiple sessions of RDP to a certain group while allowing only 1 session for everyone else.

Using Outlook with RDS

RDS on server 2012 R2. 1 GW, 1 CB and 2 SH's. This question is in regard to the webfeed and outlook. We have a remote office that use the webfeed. They use outlook and what they are reporting is poor performance when attaching files to an email. Outlook becomes unresponsive from the time you click the file to attach until the file is attached. After the file is attached, outlook will respond and everything is normal again. Since outlook is on the server, the file is "uploaded" to outlook on the server. Is there a way to overcome this unresponsiveness in outlook when attaching files?

Do I have to remove RDS license from AWS before I can use them again

Hello All,

I have an Amazon Web Server Windows 2012 set up to perform remote app functions.

I installed the rds client license I needed to have the users access the remote app. Now my client wants to scrap the AWS server for a local server in house. In order to use the rds license on the new server do I have to remove the license from the AWS server before it gets decommissioned or can I just install the rds license on the new server .

File Associations Error

RDS with 1 GW, 1 CB and 2 SH's on server 2012 R2. Word files are no longer associated with doc(x) files. We use the webfeed to push apps to the desktop and open office files. When i go and change the associations in the collection, i get:

I can disassociate without error but can not associate file types. Any ideas?

RDP to a folder on server directly

Hi, 

We have a requirement to let users RDP into a server and access 1 folder only. We want that users directly open up into that folder shortcut and not be able to see anything else on desktop / Start Menu / Other drives.

After seeing various blogs , i could figure that we can enable certain GPO settings to lock down things like Recycle Bin on Desktop , some apps on start menu etc. but not completely hide everything. 

Is there a way to specify anywhere in RDP properties / create an RDP URL that users go into the folder directly and everything else is not visible to them ? 

PS : We do not want to share that folder and give access over UNC.

Print PDF file from winform client installed on RDC or VDI using local printer (TS Easy Print)

Dears,

I'm working on a legacy application using winform (.net 4.0 & c#).

The client application is installed on a machine accessible only via RDC or VDI. The OS is Windows 7 or higher.

The client application must be able to print PDF files from that machine to the local printer (local or network) installed on the client machine. This means that the printer selected via RDC is a redirected printer using the TS easy print drivers. Those drivers don't allow the usage of RAW printing.

The printing method used before were:

- Copy of the files directly on the UNC of the printer (\\printername\dc)

- Usage of ImportDll and calls to OpenPrinter, StartDocPrinter, WritePrinter, ....

Both of those solutions don't work anymore because:

- The network printers are not on the same domain anymore and therefore not accessible directly from the RDC.

- The WritePrinter method don't work anymore since the easy print drivers don't understand RAW printing.

So, here comes my question. How can I print on those printer? Do I have to create an EMF file for the printing? If yes, how can I use my PDF file and create an EMF file containing the information? Is there other solutions (modifying the group policy is not an option since we don't want to install the drivers of the different clients that will connect)?

In last resort, the usage of a library could be foreseen but a long discussion with the management will be necessary (so I hope other solutions exists). Is there some third party library that you could advice?

Also, I tried printing in that environment using PrintDocument.Print(). That is working as expected but with that solution the problem is to convert the pdf to a drawable format (one image per page or other ...).

Need help for testing RDS security (Windows Server 2012)

Hi, i am working at a IT department for a one month period and under this period i have been allowed to do mostly what i want to do. So i have been experimenting with diffrent things and now i have made an RDS server that works. With a home folder for the user's also.

The thing i am wondering about is if there is any things i can do to test the security on the RDS server. I want to be sure that a user can't do anything to change the things i have put in place.

I am quite new to this and i am interested in security so any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I have tried some things my self like disconecting the home folder and being able to access uninstall programs, but i dont feel i know enough to be able to exploit mistakes and things like that.

The Group policy's i have enabled is:

RemoteFX USB redirection on Windows 8.1 core single language

On this Windows version does not work GPO. I found registry key which enables RemoteFx USB redirection, but it does not helps.

RD Connection Brokers Active/Active mode?

Hi all,

In Windows server 2012 and later, HA for RD Connection Brokers have Active/Active mode. I have configured that but I check and system is on active/passive mode (Image attached). Please see image and help me to configure active/active mode!

Basic theme corrupt, black boxes in apps when connected

Hi....

On one of our Windows 2012 Remote Desktop Host servers we have the following problem.

--Not working example:

So black boxes all over the place. When I troubleshooted this as admin I found that switching the theme to "Windows" under Windows standard theme  made the black boxes go away. But switching to the "Windows Basic" them makes them appear again.

So:

-- How do I fix the basic theme? As this is the theme regular users uses and they have no option of changing theme. RemoteApp technology is used.

-- Or possibly, as I think it works fine with the "Windows" theme, how do I apply this to all users logging in to the server?

Also, I have tried to find a solution on this on the forum, the internet and be general troubleshooting. No errors in the event log in Windows......

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:


The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below. 

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

I have a W2K8R2 RDS server that publishes Remote Desktop Client to the web.  When attempting to RDP from this web server to another(ServerA) that is internal to my work network, I get the following errors:

"A revocation check could not be performed for the certificate."

"You may not proceed due to the severity of the certificate errors."

When attempting to RDP from an internal computer(laptop) to this same server(ServerA) I still get cert errors but am able to proceed.  I've tried different versions of RDP client but that didn't make a difference.  I am also able to RDP from our RDS web server to other internal computers no problem, so my question is what may be happening on this one server(ServerA) that would prevent me from establishing an RDP session?

Annoying display issue

I just purchased a new Spectre convertible from HP running Windows 10.  Everything is working well so far except for a very small line that looks like a 'strike through' that is always at the same 2.5 inches from the top of the screen.  It would be like reading this information with the very top of the words with a white line that just runs along the top of the sentence at the same place, if on a darker colored screen.   You can read everything, but it is just annoying.  It only happens with text. Nothing is missing in a video or pictures.  Is there a way to reset this or check it someway to see if it can resolve itself?  I really do not want to take it back as I have spent a lot of time getting it set up for my use.  I also am out of the country for a few months- making it an issue that should be resolved while under warranty! As I write this, the Title Box is showing the issue.  Each of the 3 words have a slight line over every letter, separate for each letter with a (y) having what looks like two dots over the v shape and an tiny little mark under the dot on the 3 (i)s.  When I first saw it, I thought it was a language accent, until I looked closer.  They are all the same, now that I am on a screen with just black and white.  It stops with the last (e) and the box is clear after that.

Windows Search

Hi,

We have 6 Remote Desktop Servers (2008R2) and 2 file servers running 2012R2. The users should be able to search into files. So is just installed Windows Search on the file servers and add the file location to the indexing service. I also installed Windows Search on each of the Remote Desktop Servers. It seems that searching directly on the file server is working, but searching on the Remote Desktop servers not. 

I thougth and  was hoping that it’s only necessary to build a index on the file servers, and that the RDS server offloads the searches to the fileservers. Is this correct? So i possibly made a mistake with configuring?

Server Hangs _ Root cause

Hi all,

One of the server is getting hung in our environment, On hung state the application team is able to ping and not able to RDP the server and after some time the issue getting auto resolved.  

Based on the System Event log , I could able to see the logs with Event ID of 5776 and in details "failed to create/open file system32 config netlogon.ftl with the following error": there is not enough space on the disk"

I have checked the space in C: Drive and the drive having 10GB of free space. Now the application team is asking the root cause of the issue

Pinning shortcuts to redirected start menu

I have looked through numerous threads which show how to pin a program to the start menu on server 2008 r2 through changing the registry etc and applying the gpo for shortcuts however none of these seem to work on our TS environment.

As our users have a redirected start menu, what would be the best way about doing this as currently any user that logins has to click on 'all programs' instead of the shortcuts appearing on the start menu itself.
