Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

RDCManager error on openning console

Hi,

after messing up with profiles on one machine, I get an annoying message when open the rdg file on new Windows 10 machine.

I entered credentials and can access my whole server structure by double clicking on server icon, after closing error message. But it appears every time I open the console.

I don't have any profiles. But the info is stored somehow in the file from previous saving.

How to solve this?

Thx.

Mac Remote Desktop Multiple Launches Required with RemoteApp

$

Hi

We're testing Remote Desktop for Mac Version 8.0.26 (Build 26951) and Windows 2012 R2 RemoteApp as a possible replacement for Citrix XenApp, launching published apps via the web page and also using Remote Resources within the app and both work pretty well but do need many of the features requested within the feature request web page, particularly proper Mac keyboard mapping.

However, one of the biggest annoyances is that having double clicked the Remote Resource it appears to commence logging in, then disappears requiring another double click.

It is more annoying using the rdweb page. Having double clicked the published app the user is then prompted for the domain and credentials, then the process begins and then stops. This has to be repeated including entering the login credentials again, usually only once, until eventually the app is launched.

Often this happens after the blue log in screen is displayed having gone through the black RDP Connecting screens.

Would appreciate a fix as this will annoy our customers.

Many thanks

Andy

New Server 2012 deployment. Using RDS with several published apps. Issue is only happening on one of the computers. Launching a 3rd party published route mapping app also brings up a QuickBooks config popup. They are unable to use the routing app until the QuickBooks config completes. This takes about 90 seconds. Occasionally clicking on buttons in the routing app with launch the QuickBooks config window again. This user\computer  does not use or need QuickBooks. The other users\computers that use the same app do not have the issue, but they all have QuickBooks installed. Thoughts?

Erroneous NLA Error

I have about 25 Windows 2008 R2 servers that are patched up to Jan 2016. 2 of them are not allowing me to connect through RDP from any client. I have tested three Windows 7 and one Windows 10 client that are also patched, and the result is the same for all of them - they can connect to all of the servers except for the same 2. The error from the 2 servers is "The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support." Of course, my clients do support NLA because they can connect to other NLA servers (which I have verified), plus the clients have RDC Client 6.3.9600 and explicitly state that Network Level Authentication is supported.

Even more details - I discovered this on the first problem server last night. I RDP'd in with no problem to check an SCCM issue. I didn't apply any updates. I rebooted as part of the sccm troubleshooting, and after the reboot, I got the first NLA error.

Any ideas what else I might check on the 2 servers?

Thanks.

Win10 RemoteApp disconnecting with multiple logins

We have a vendor that presents a custom RemoteApp to a client over the internet.  Client has new Windows 10 workstations (just migrated from Windows 7).  With Windows 7, the client was able to open the RemoteApp via shortcut, then open a second instance of the RemoteApp by opening the same shortcut again.  After the upgrade to Windows 10 workstations, when the user attempts to open a second session of the RemoteApp, they get disconnected from the first connection with a message to the affect of 'You have been disconnected because another session has logged in".

We verified with the vendor that multiple logins from the same client is allowed, and we verified it by hooking one of the old Windows 7 boxes back up and testing.

Only things I could find in my search had to do with hacking the workstation dll file to allow multiple inbound RDP sessions, this is not what we are looking for. Or, how to disable multiple logins from the host.  This is also not the solution as multiple logins are enabled as desired.

Thanks for your time and attention.

2012R2 RDS Completely Stuck, users cant login saying RDS is busy

Hey Everyone,

Rather strange issue we've run into in the past month or two. I just submitted a case to MS about the issue, but I'm curious if anyone here has seen this.

Environment: 5 2012R2 RDS Servers, up to date with all updates. Clients - Win 7 all up to date. Users have roaming TS profiles.

In late december, we started to see an issue where RDS servers seem "stuck", and nobody can log into them. A user will sit and wait at the RDP login screen 'Please Wait for User profile Service' indefinitely. It's not that logins are slow, they don't work at all. Even administrators can't login (RDP, RDP console, local console). The only way to 'unstick' a server is to hard-reset it. Users can log in again, but typically only for a day or two.

We noticed in January that certain users seemed to be causing the issue. When user John Doe would log into a server (often unsuccessfully), that would 'lock' a server, and then nobody else could login (as per my description above). As such, we deleted all users roaming RDS profiles. This seemed to 'fix' the issue for 3-4 weeks, but has returned today.

We've researched this issue to death! Lots of forum threads about 08R2 having this issue, but also lots of hotfixes. Apparently in 08R2 this is caused by filesystem deadlocks. Lots of people seem to have this issue with 2012R2 as well, but very little information and very few hotfixes. Most of the threads go nowhere and have no apparent fixes. We keep peoples RDS profiles very small (most under 5-20MB), so it's not like these profiles are very large. When the farm is working properly, most people can login completely within about 10 seconds).

We've seen a couple hotfixes that seem related to this issue, but none of them have worked (3047296, 3053667). We've installed all Windows updates (Except February 2016), but nothing has resolved this issue. The farm was working fine for about 8 months in up to december when we started to see this issue.

We built entirely new RDS servers from scratch mid-january. That did not fix the issue.

Event logs are pretty clean. The only major errors are group policy taking too long to apply. Again, logins aren't slow when this happens, they dont workat all. You can sit and wait all day the the 'please wait for user profile service' screen.

We've also tried the usual group policy settings (detect slow network connections, wait for network at startup, synchronous/asynchonous login, etc), nothing has helped.

There's a few other threads with seemingly similar issues, but no real fix.

Thoughts? The only hunch I have so far is it's somehow user profile or group policy based. But again, we keep profiles clean and small.

User Profile Disks & Roaming Profiles

We have a small W2K12R2 Domain with roaming profiles.

I believe that using the "Remote Desktop Services Profile" path option prevents the roaming profiles from being inherited when users log onto the RDS.

Do User Profile Disks also provide a separate profile for an RDS session or do they interact with the domain roaming profiles in some way?

Connecting old Thin client (HP T5300) to 2012 RDS. "Because of a Security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer"

$

Hello,

I am having an issue with thin clients on my new RDS configuration.  All Windows 7/10 etc instances of MSTSC connect to RDS fine.  I have some Thin clients previously configured to 2003 Terminal Services that need reconfiguring to 2012 RDS.

I receive the error when trying to connect "Because of a Security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer".

In the Server event logs under RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTSOperational, I see that it logs on and then an Event ID 103 "The disconnect reason is 0"

I have ensured that "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication" is NOT set, but I still receive the error.  I am not sure where to look next.  I read on Technet that possibly a cert is corrupt, but other Operating systems connect with no issue.

My set up is one collection with one server and I am attempting to connect directly to the FQDN of that one server.

If I have missed any details out, please let me know.  Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Dan

RDS and SID error with two-way trust

Hey there.. weird one here.. I am testing RemoteApps with Server 2012. All is fine except for when I try and grant access to user in another forest where we have a two-way\forest transitive trust. The error is below.. What is interesting is the trust works fine otherwise. For example, if I try and add a user to the local admin group on the server it works great.. I can even authenticate via RDweb portal from a user in the trusted domain.. any ideas?

PowerShell with RemoteDesktopServices

I am learning PowerShell on RemoteDesktopServices.  However, when I cd RDS:, there are just GatewayServer and LicenseServer, but no RDSConfiguration.

What is causing the problem?

Thanks.

Old App requires access to an .ini C:\windows does not work in Remote Desktop services.

We have an old application that has an .ini C:\windows. Every time it starts it will require to read that .ini . The app is working fine on Windows 2012R2 server when there is no Remote Desktop Services installed. As soon as remote desktop services role is installed, the app is having hard time to read the .ini in C:\windows and fails to launch. If we take out the remote desktop services, it started to work again.

However, I am able to to modify the .ini in notepad.

And also, I tried to reinstall the app in terminate mode and it still does not work.

Not sure if remote desktop services changes the way on how application access the C:\windows. Running out of idea now.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

RDP Windows CE 6.0 to Server 2012 R2

Hey Microsoft Technet,

I have a bit of an issue right now.  I was handed a Windows embedded device (a barcode scanner to be specific) with Windows CE 6.0 installed on it.  Some other gentleman within my company have set up a Windows Term Server that I'm suppose to be able to RDP into on Server 2012 R2.  However when trying to establish a connection I get the following error message:

"This computer can't connect to the remote computer.  Try connecting again.  if the problem continues, contact n/w admin."

I've double checked the ip address, hostname, and credentials i'm using.  And have now attempted this on multiple barcode scanners.  However I still get the same repeating error message.  The box is a test box, so no certificates (too my knowledge).  By all accounts everything should be working properly.  However nothing seems to work as planned.  If someone can point me in the right direction (I do typically like finding the answers myself, but don't like hitting my head against a brick wall) I would appreciate it.

Revoke Per Device License CALs from RD License Server for multiple devices using Commands or PowerShell

$

Hi Guys,

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 License Server which is holding TS/RDS per device CALs. I can go to each of the license version, see what are the devices and can manually revoke license one by one.

What i want to do is how can i revoke licenses for multiple devices from GUI or from command-module or using PowerShell. The reason is, we have 11 License versions. each of them contains several computers. now i can get a list to find out what are the computers no longer active. now instead of going into each of the license-versions and finding out the device and then revoke licenses, i want to do it in more simpler way - by using a command from a file-list of computers if licenses can be revoked. This can be from command-prompt or from PowerShell. This will save my time and also for future revocation, the process will be much easier. I am aware that I can only revoke 20% of CALs at a given point of time.

If anyone can help to advise, that will be appreciated.

EVENT ID: 1152 - Failed to create KVP sessions string. Error Code 0x8007007A
Source: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager
Log: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager/Operational

We are currently experiencing the above mentioned error intermittently on both of our RD Servers. Both servers and virtualised on separate 2012 Hyper-V servers running Core. Both run 2012 R2 and belong to the same pool. Users have been complaining about getting kicked off of the servers during the day and when we check the disconnects coincide with the above Event ID 1152. The servers are fully patched and licenced, there are no licencing errors.  We have exhausted all avenues attempting to find the fix for this so are open to any suggestions or assistance you can give.

Regards,

Anthony

2008 R2 - RDS Users are getting temp cals

The issue is I do not see any licenses issued by the RDS licensing server to the users who log in to the server. Maybe the users are getting temp cals  . No events in the eventvwr logs also about the same. Also I have uninstalled and reinstalled the RDS licensing role feature. Also the RDS licensing database have been rebuild using the following steps:

1.Stop the RDS licensing service on the server
2.Rename the c:\windows\system32\lserver folder to lserverold
3.Restart the licensing service and this would recreate the lserver folder.
4.On the RDS licensing console right click on the servername and click manage and reset the licensing database , this will ask to enter the SPLA agreement number which was entered
5.Reactivate the number of licenses required .

i have tried on a machine which is not in the domain and also with machine within the domain which has the policy configured.Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing
Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers .

Also I have uninstalled and reinstalled the RDS licensing role .
i dont see the lincenses issued by the RDS licensing server , it is shows 4 licenses avaiable
