Failed Remote Desktop authenticatoins are not in Security Log

$

I am trying to verify that failed access (via Remote Desktop) from a Windows 7 WYSE thin client (on the domain) to other machines on the domain are being logged. The domain controller is Server 2012 and I am using the advanced auditing settings offered in GPMC at the domain level.

When I open up the Remote Desktop Connection from the Thin Client to either a workstation on the domain or even the domain controller (as admin) and try to purposely enter a bad password for the domain user I can not seem to find any Failed Security event in the log on the DC or the workstation. I would expect this to be at least be shown on the DC.

However, when I do the same process as above and enter a username that I know to be incorrect and not a domain user with a random password, that failed event DOES get logged in the Security log on the DC as both a failed 4325 and 4776.

Any reason as to why only non-domain or non-accounts failed Remote Desktop login events are being generated on the DC security logs?

Also it appears that failed authentications for domain accounts at the actual physical thin client get logged just fine, just not when using Remote Desktop.

My Advanced Audit Settings for Authentication are as follows:

ACCOUNT LOGON: Audit Credential Validation - Success & Failure

     LOGON/LOGOFF: Audit Logon - Success & Failure

Audit Other Logon/Logoff Events - Success & Failure

Thanks

Windows 2012 RDS without session broker cannot connect more than 2 users

Hi community,

I'm new on Windows Server 2012 (but not MS world) and I'm setting up a new system for remote access purpose.

We bought our 2 licenses for server 2012 R2 and 45 personnal RDS CALs (ESX with 2 CPus).

I setup everything (OS+RDS Cals) and we installed our software we wan't to share to our users.

As we previously was on Windows Srv 2003, we just want to setup "Remote Desktop" service without web access or service broker.

So now we have our server on AD 2008 like (Samba 4) without GPO for our host.

I've try many way to enable more than this 2 RDP slot without success (https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/kb/2833839 or via Local Policy). From the kb/2833839, I've an exception on ChangeMode().

My question is simple: Can we have more than 2 remote accesses without broker and all other stuff we don't want to use and if so, how can we do it.

Our RDS are correclty configured on our AD and are "green" on server side usign lismgr.

Thanks for your help

freezes of the RDS servers

We have several VMware Virtual machines. All servers are  Windows Server 2012 R2  Remote Desktop servers. Normal applications are installed like Office and we are using AppV packages to deploy applications like Navision etc.

We are using Automation Machine for deployment and we use VMware UEM for user settings.

The problem we have is intermittent unresponsiveness of one of the  RDS servers . When this happens the servermanager application on the connection broker servers are no longer responding, and if we close and reopen the Servermanager we see that one of the servers state is “inaccessible”. New user sessions freeze during startup on the welcome screen. CRTL+ALT+END doesn’t work, logging in to the console doesn’t work.

At that point nobody can login on any RDS server. We also cannot control other RDS machines anymore because the whole collection is related to that not responding server. Which does not give us the option to see which users are logged in on that specific server so we cannot send a message to the user to logoff. The only solution then is to hard reboot the faulty RDS server.

We have searched windows event logs for some answers but we haven’t found any useful information.

1 – What causes random freezes of the RDS servers.

2 – How can we avoid and keep access to a working server manager

3 – When one RDS is not responding the connection broker should redirect users to another RDS instead of the faulty one.

I have an old server running Windows Server 2008.  The client machines used to use Remote Desktop to access a database on it.  The software has since been changed to a different program that's a real server based application.  So now I keep getting failed login messages from the old server.  There are 2 client machines that are trying to connect to the old server on user accounts that no longer exist on the server or the clients.  How do I find and shut off this process on the 2 clients? I've already got it shut off on the old server.

RDS Clustering on Serer 2012 without SQL Server

Hello,

I'm looking for failover cluster with minimum of 2 nodes without SQL Server.

Server -1 Remote Desktop web , Remote Connection Broker, Remote Desktop Session host

Server - 2 Remote Desktop Web ,Remote Connection Broker, Remote Desktop Session host

How can I achieve Failover cluster here. So if Server 1 fails or down then still my users can access their desktop session without downtime.

these both servers are in VM on VMware, Please advice.

Terminal Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Skype for Business 2015 using 100% CPU

Every few days we get lync.exe ( with is Skype for Business 2015)using between 1 and 6 % for every user who is has the program running. It adds up to All 17 processors being used 100%. I have to terminate the process and then it is ok. I change the priority and Set the Affinity to say the last processors so Lync.exe is only using two of them, the server goes back to normal levels except the last two processors stay pegged at 100%. Looking at the performance tab the percentages don't all add up. There are 14 users each with 1 %  now that  have the two processors at 100%.

We are using only the basic license for most users which is having only the instant messenger activated. They can't video chat or share remote desktops.

We did have to open hundreds of ports on the Firewall to get it to work as a side note.

Auto Updates are controlled by an update server, it is a managed environment.

I have used Process Explorer and it confirms everything.

This is a Terminal Server with about 50 users.

This host is only 18 months old there is no way all the resources should get used up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is up-to-date on patches and services packs.

RemoteApp sessions not letting go of VMs or UPDs, causing subsequent logins to attach to TEMP profile or not work at all

$

I've set up a test server running the latest version of 2012 and configured RemoteApps.

What appears to be happening is that after your initial logon to a remoteapp, when you close the session your user profile disk is staying "in use". So when you login again, if you get attached to a different VM (which seems to happen every time), then it can't attach to the UPD, so you get logged in with a TEMP profile.

Additionally, it seems like once you've had someone attach to all of the VMs, then you can no longer connect to any of them. They are basically one-use VMs. Once they've all been connected to and disconnected from, you get this error when trying to run any remoteapp:

There are no available computers in the pool

Looking at the server manager the VMs all say "disconnected" but they also show the last user to login under "user".

There aren't any errors or warnings in my event logs that seem related or are even from the specific times.

Rebooting the server fixed the issues only until users logged in again and it started over.

I'm at a loss, as this VDI/VM stuff is kind of new to me.

Deployed printers wont stay set as default

Using RDS 2012 R2 server, we are deploying 4 or so printers via group policy.

When a user sets them to default printer and logs off, when they log back on the default has changed to another non mapped printer (local printer).

Do not set default client printer to be default printer in a session is enabled in GPO.

Tested the same outcome on a 2008 r2 non rds server as well.

Session Broker Configuration

I'm looking for some guidance on setting up RDS in my environment. I have one domain controller, two servers used for heavy processing use and one server for people to RDP to and use apps.

The DC is the license server and the other three servers are all host servers. I need to be able to remote control on the three servers. The server I'm using for using the apps will have RDWeb installed.

Which server do I install the Broker service on? The DC or does it need to go on the server that I need remoteapps on?

Thanks.

RDS SecurityLayer radomly changing

$

Hi,

One of our RDS session hosts has a strange problem. From time to time the RDS Security Layer changes which causes slow logon times of up to 60 seconds.

When we first experienced the slow logon we "reset" the Security Layer setting on de RDS Collection by setting the Security Layer to "RDP security layer" and then back to "Negotiate". A few hours later the problem returned.

We then discovered that the following registry key on the remote desktop server changes to 0:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\SecurityLayer
When we change the value of the SecurityLayer key to 1 everything works normal again and logons to the RDS are fast.

The key has changed multiple times now but I can't find any correlations. Also the interval of changing seems totally random. Has anybody any ideas why this setting is changing or how to troubleshoot further?

Thanks in advance.

Disconnected Network Drives

My RDS environment:
1 Connection Broker
3 Session Hosts
*All servers are Windows Server 2012 R2
*Using HP Thin Clients

Hello,

I'm having an issue with my RDS environment.  Each user is my organization gets an S:\ drive mapping for our organizational share through a logon script.  The S:\ drive is a share in our DFS namespace.

It seems that the first user that logs on to a particular Session Host server gets the S:\ drive mapping without issue.  Subsequent users that connect to the same Session Host server get a "Disconnected Network Drive" object with a red "X" on it in place of the S:\ drive (see the screenshot below).  The S:\ drive is still accessible to them but does not appear as a mapped drive in their session when running the "net use" command and the S:\ drive cannot be manually disconnected either.  The same "Disconnected Network Drive" object also shows up for users that log on to the same Session Host server that are not assigned any logon scripts or drive mappings.

I've tried rebooting the session host servers, but the problem always returns.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

$

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

hello,

The remote computer cannot be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate.

Security certificate problems might indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the remote computer.

thanks.

Academic Research - Remote Desktop Services CAL Licensing

$

I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to get academic licensing for clients to connect to an RDS server implementation to carry out an academic experiment.  My research has to do with machine learning based failure prediction and I need a way to generate load on a Microsoft Windows Server.  I've found a tool that generates Remote Desktop connections (which would create the authentication load I need on the Active Directory Services server) and I have a Remote Desktop Services server setup and ready with several clients, but no user licenses.

Is there some way for me to enable the connections (even if it's only for a couple of days) without having to pay for full blown licenses?  Any help/guidance/support would be greatly appreciated and potentially cited in the research.

Thanks!

Windows Server 2012 R2 - RDWeb - MSTSC to hosts farm

$

Hello :)

I have deployed a Standard W2012 R2 RDS collection, in a testing enviroment.

Right now the collection has 3 servers - 1 Broker / Gateway - 2 Sessions hosts.

My questions are as follow:

When publishing a Remote Desktop connection (mstsc.exe /v hosts.domain.dk), what should i insert in the "hosts.domain.dk" to make sure load balancing will work between to 2 session hosts?? I believe a DNS round robin should work, but is that the correct way to do this or????

When connecting directly to S1TS01.domain.dk from the published remote app, my keystrokes are not "forwarded" to the session host?

If i connect directly to the session host (RDP) or from the Tab "Connect to a remote PC" on the RDweb the keystrokes are forwarded ?

I hope you can help, because the RDS solution looks like a Citrix killer - and it works really good :)

Thanks in advance :)

RemoteApp Blank Text Fields

$

Hi

I have an odd issue and have been unable to find a solution on the forums.

We have a Server 2008 R2 box running RemoteApp and have published our application to it. When logged onto the server via RDP the application works perfectly. However when we start the application using RemoteApp everything works apart from popup message boxes.

These forms pop up but the text field is not shown despite it being populated.

I have managed to recreate this on other 2008 servers and on 2012 so far but only through RemoteApp

The application runs on .net 4.6

Any ideas would be very helpful

Thanks
