RemoteApp session sent to wrong collection

$

I have a 2012 R2 RemoteApp environment with the following servers:

Server1 - Session host, internal web gateway, connection broker (HA configured)

Server2 - Session host, internal web gateway, connection broker (HA configured)

Server3 - Session host

Server4 - External web gateway (published to web on port 443)

Server5 - External web gateway (one should always have redundancy right?)

Servers 1,2,3 are all in a single RDSH collection, lets call it RemoteApps. All apps work properly from the inside and outside through all connection methods from desktop RDC clients to web interface to iOS and Android devices. (this still seems like magic to me)

Now let me introduce our new friend Server6. Server6 is just session host. It has been added to a new collection, lets call it AdminDesktop. Server6 has exactly the same programs installed as Servers 1,2,3 but is in a new collection so I can access the full desktop remotely from my tablet when I travel. It is also there so I can isolate it and any work done on it will not effect the production sessions on Servers 1,2,3.

Server6 rarely gets attention. Most of my connections to the published AdminDesktop service are instead directed to one of the application session servers (1,2,3). Since they are all identical I have to check every time I connect to make sure I'm not on a production server before I begin working.

The reverse situation never happens. If I launch an individual application I am always 100% of the time directed to one of the proper RemoteApps collection servers (1,2,3).

I have verified all servers are in the proper AD RDS groups, and my gateway policy has been setup (for testing purposes) to allow me to access any domain computer through the gateway.

How can I configure this so the AdminDesktop sessions will always go to Server6 in the AdminDesktop collection?

RDC Manager v2.7 (Not Responding)

I have a Win7 Pro running RDCMan v2.7 to connect to a few Win Server 2008 R2.

I have used this version for awhile but recently there are instances that it would not respond. I get "Not Responding" intermittently and unable to close the application or end the process in task manager. The only resort is to restart.

I tried to  restore previous setting as well as reinstall RDC Manager but to no avail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Around 450 RemoteApp Sessions limit on Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services Session Host without apparent bottleneck - RDS Broker scalability issue

$

Hi

We have an RDS farm with the following set-up (using Windows Server 2012 R2) to serve RemoteApps to our clients:

  • Two RDS Gateways
  • Four Session Hosts (24-physical processors and 512 GB ram each)
  • User profile disks enabled
  • One RDS Licensing Server
  • Two RDS Broker Servers

The problem we are facing is that it seems like there's a "magic number" of about 450 connections (fluctuating between 445 and 455) per each Session Host.

Once this number is reached users start to report:

  • General session slowness (slow update of Remote App window contents)
  • Some users are unable to log in to their (new) session
  • Some users are connecting but presented with "empty" screen
  • Some users are getting (randomly?) disconnected

When the issue happens, based on performance counters, the CPU is in range of 30%, RAM has about 200 GB free.

Processor Queue length during the day is mostly within "<2 range", with ~30% of the time going higher up to 6 intermittently (not consistently), and with ~1.5% of the time being more than 10. (There's no continuous queue build-up) So our understanding that this is not a CPU/RAM limitation.

There were no limits on concurrent number of sessions set on Session Hosts as of SW side to my knowledge. Review of Application/System/RdpCoreTs Logs does not show anything really suspicious at the time the limit is hit, the errors/warnings in event logs do not correlate with timing of the problem.

We've been investigating this issue for a several weeks now and it's still absolutely unclear what could cause such limitation. Maybe someone experienced similar issues.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi,

its possible to have 2 languages (czech and german) on the one Windows Server 2012R2? I have 2 groups
with DE users and CZ users. My vision is, when user from DE user group is signed to terminal server,
his display language is german and when is from CZ group - he has czech display language.
I tested settings with group policy - created a 2 new GPO - RDS2012R2-CZ and RDS2012R2-DE -
window security, I chose the appropriate group and set User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Regional and Language Options
.... but no effect.

Office365 user connecting to RDS and can't view docs

I have users with Office 365 accounts logging into my RDS Server to run an app.  This app stores attachments (word/excel files).  Yet they can't access these documents because the apps are not on the RDS Server.  I understand why, but is there a way to have the attachments open with the users Office account?  Even via the web app version and even if it is just read-only.  They have a "licence" but can't seem to use it in this scenario.  Thanks.

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer

When trying to connect to remote desktop I get a  "Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer" error.

I am able to connect to the desktop from the laptop while using the internet at work, school, and hotels; however not at home. The only thing that I know is different is the internet provider. Could that be causing this issue or might there be something else?

Windosw App Store and RDS 2012 R2

The parts of the App Store resides in %appdata%\Local\packages which is not part of the normal roaming profile.

Is there a way to make the App Store roam across multiple RDS servers in a farm?

Does the App Store used files other than those in the registry and %appdata%\Local\packages ?

Info:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2795607

Windows Store applications are linked to the Microsoft account that was used to install them. Each Microsoft Account can have a maximum of 5 PC's linked to it. In a Terminal Server Farm scenario or scenarios where users do not have assigned PCs,

How to sign printer driver with self-signed certificate (redirect local printer with unsigned driver)?

$

Hello, Dear Colleagues.

Would you kindly to help me with next question.

We are using local printers in RDS. If to redirect printers with origin drivers, not remote desktop easy print, printing speed is increasing. But drivers are unsigned and printers do not redirects with appropriate error (driver unsigned and etc.) until to sign driver (tested it with new signed, but unstable drivers). And I want to sign this old drivers with self-signed certificate.

How can I do so, or maybe there is a way to bypass this limitation and use unsigned driver for printer redirection?

Thanks.

Have a nice day.

Not able to create folder on mapped local drive through RDP

Hi,

This behaviour is only visible in Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2. Everything works fine for older operating systems.

When you open RDP session to above server/client and open a redirected local drive in Windows Explorer you don’t have ‘New’ command available from the context menu (right click) in the root of the drive. As soon as you navigate to any folders you can see the command in the context menu. The command is not available only in root of the drive. This is not a permission issue since you can copy/paste new folders/files to root of redirected drive. You just don’t have ‘New’ command available.

It works if you access drive using UNC path in Windows Explorer. Eg\\client\c$ or map a local drive letter to the client drive. It’s only drives redirected through RDP don’t have that menu item available.

Is this a bug or it’s by design ? Why the behaviour has been changed in new Operating Systems ?

RemoteApp Management Tool for HelpDesk Suggestion

$

Hey Guys -

We recently integrated RemoteApp into our environment and so far it's worked out well for the most part.  The big issue we are having is that sessions are getting stuck and we are having to Disconnect / Log Users out of sessions manually in order to"reset" them.

I'm trying to find a Tool / Utility / Script (Preferably with GUI) which our HelpDesk (who have limited access) may use to perform this operation.  Ideally, if i could find something they could launch which would show just the "Connections" pane under "Collections" (picture below) of the server's RemoteApp configiurations; that would be perfect.

Any suggestions?  Thank You!

Multimedia redirection causes wemb video to freeze.

Multimedia redirection through RDP is great for video playback when browsing the web over RDP, but if the video is a WEBM "gif" like those hosted on gfycat.com or imgur's gifv format, as soon as the multimedia redirection "kicks in", the video freezes. If I scroll, I can see the gif playing under the frozen frame. This happens in any browser. Multimedia redirection works fine for youtube and other video streaming sites. I don't want to turn off multimedia redirection completely because it is very useful for all the videos it DOES work with.

cmdkey.exe stopped to store passwords

I've used cmdkey.exe to store username and password for RDP connections for ages but suddenly stopped to work.

I can still find the password saved when I launch the cmdkey /list command but they get completely ignored by mstsc:

On another computer, same commands work fine!

The only thing that comes in my mind that could interfere with cmdkey is the installation of a smart card reader but I don't see how.

Any clue?

Thanks,

Alex

Server 2012 R2 Users - Sessions - End a disconnected session. Not working?

$

Hey,

I am trying to configure a server to end disconnected sessions after 1 minute for most of the users except one user which will be running TeamViewer and needs the session to remain running whether connected or not.

I have set via Computer Management - Local Users and Groups - Users - Username - Properties - Sessions: End a disconnected session: 1 minute.

The session does not seem to end though, just stays in the disconnected state.

I also set the Idle session limit to 1 minute with, When a session limit is reached or connection broken: End session.

Any tips on how to get this to work?

User Profile Disks (UPD) High availability

Hello everyone (and sorry for my english...)

In our company we have a Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster. There we have 2 VM remote desktop session servers.

We would like to start using "User Profile Disk" but we want to have High Availability for UPD. How can we do that? Im thinking in create a CSV on the Hyper V cluster to put the UPD in there but I don't know if is a good practice and if it is the correct way.

I saw this similar thread in technet forum but there is no reply for it:

Thanks a lot for your help!

Publish RDP connections through RDWeb App

$

Hello,

I know it is possible to publish a RDP connection through the RDWeb App but adding a command line switch for /v:<server name> but is it possible to just do a straight RDP connection to the RDS Server?

The problem with adding a mstsc remote app and using the /v:<servername> switch, is that it spawns two RDP sessions on the server itself.

How is it possible to just publish a straight RDP connection to the RDServer?

Cheers!

Peter

Delegate Administrator access to a 2012 R2 Collection

Hi,

I want to give a Tech Support staff member access to daily administration functions on a Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Collection, primarily to log off users from their sessions. Unlike in Server 2008 R2, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this.

Does anybody know how? Thanks.

VDI Pooled Desktop Connection Issues

$

Hello,

We deployed a pooled virtual desktop on a Server 2012 R2 as a proof of concept, running two Windows 7 VM's as pooled virtual desktops. The Connection Broker, Virtualization Host, Gateway and Web Access are all running on the same server. The deployment seems to be fine. I am able to connect to a Win7 virtual desktop in the pool. However, this is not the case for all users. For some users, they are able to connect to a pooled desktop but only once. After they log off, they can no longer connect again unless I delete that user's VDI profile disk. Once their profile disk is deleted, they can connect again and a new profile disk is created. But after they log off, they can no longer connect until I delete their profile disk again. I think we can rule out a permissions issue because they are members of groups that are granted access to the VDI collection. Other users that are members of the same group do not have this issue.

I have found this in the Event Logs:

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent/Admin
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent
Date:          9/21/2015 8:26:37 AM
Event ID:      4890
Task Category: Configuration
Level:         Error
Keywords:
User:          NETWORK SERVICE
Computer:      RW-VDI-05.domain.local
Description:
Remote Desktop Virtualization Host could not apply a user desktop for a user account with a SID of S-1-5-21-*******. A temporary profile was enforced for the user. Verify that the user profile disk settings are correct.

Virtual desktop name: WIN7-VDI05
Error: 0x490.92

I am not sure where else to look. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Manny
