Customizing Start Screen and Apps Screen

Hi!

I'm trying to make a default Startscreen that all users will get when they logon to the terminalserver. I have all the shortcuts and i've grouped them With names. My enviorment is all Win 2012 R2, RDS is configured from a standard Microsoft guide.

We use UPD With the following settings

Includes Roaming and Registry + \appdata\local\micrsosoft\windows

My latest attemt to solve the problem includes

1. Log in With a admin on the terminal server, manually configuring the start screen.

2. copy the file \"admin user"\appdata\local\Microsoft\Windows\appsfolder.itemdata-ms to same location in Default (user)

3. strip away all Write Access to the file, so only read is left. i also do this to the file in the other user account (admin user) so all appsfolder.itemdata-ms files on the computer is Read only, even for system.

4. then i check my UPD share, and delete all files exept the template.

5. log on With a normal user via rdweb, a New upd is created and my startscreen is "Windows default"

6 i check the itemdata file in the UPD and see it has a different size.

So my questions is.

1. where is that file generated from? does it generate from the Upd template file (witsh seems empty then mounted)?

if i knew how and of what this UPD is made up of, maby i could understand better. Or if there are files copied in to the UPD upon logon to the TS, and from what profile would that be? Default?, "admin user", All users?, Programdata?, default user? whis is blackmagic to me ;)

2. Is there a solution for this? i've red som many diffrent ways of doing this but have'nt succeeded.

Best Regards

Mouse Cursor Lag in RDP Sessions

We've been having a problem with the mouse cursor in RDP sessions on one of our Windows 2008 R2 Servers.

When connected with RDP the host mouse cursor will lag behind the client mouse cursor. This is visually distracting and disruptive for our users. I would post an image of the behavior, but my account is not yet verified.

We unfortunately cannot pinpoint where this started, as the users did not report it until sometime after it had started. This server is a VM running on VMWare VSphere, but we have been in touch with VMWare and they told us it is a Microsoft / RDP problem, and not a VMWare problem. This issue does not present when you are connected with the VMWare console. None of our other VMWare servers are having this issue. We have tried changing VMWare graphics and mouse drivers, adjusted hardware acceleration, all without effect. We've also checked cursor shadowing, and the cursor scheme is set to none.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Local Service system profile grown to extremely large size

Was doing some routine maintenance on my RDSH farm and noticed that one server has much less free space than the others.  I looked at which folders were the culprit and found this one:

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local

It was full of files like the following:

FontCache-S-1-5-21-30371924-1664817342-1491421105-149182.dat

These files take up 50+GB of space.  My guess they're associated with user profiles.

Are they safe to delete?  I don't want to delete an actively used file.

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

I am having the same issue: I have a new Windows 2012 R2 server running AD and RDP. Everything was working great until I rebooted yesterday, and now when I log in at the server, it logs me in as an RDP user and a temporary profile.    My external RDP users log in just fine, and their profiles are okay.  What is Microsoft doing about getting a fix for this?

Sound in Remote Desktop Session stops working

Hello,

I have a sound issue with a 2008 server (32 bit). I'm monitoring the server via an RDP-Session that's up and running 24/7. Sometimes, the audio-output on the Client PC (Win 7 pro, 32 bits too) fells silent. Sound on the ClientPC itself (outside the RDP-Session) is fine, within the Session everything seems to be okay (volume control, Microsoft RDP Audio Device), just there is no sound. If I close the Session and reconnect, sound is back - sometimes for a day, sometimes for a week... Audio in the Console-Session or in other RDP-Sessions at the same time is flawless.

The WAN-Link between the two sites is a bit shabby, but as long as the session itself doesn't break I don't see a reason why a few beeps shouldn't come through.

After searching for a solution for a while now I have found hundreds of threads and solutions for no sound in RDP-Sessions at all, even a MS-Hotfix for shabby sound - but obviously I'm the only guy with such a problem.

Ideas anyone?

Thanks.

Installing a SSL certificate for RDP access to a Windows 2008 R2 & Windows 2012 R2 server

We have several servers (Windows 2008 R2 & Windows 2012 R2) that we recently ran PCI vulnerability scans against. They failed a "SSL Certificate - Signature Verification Failed Vulnerability" test and the recommended solution is to install a server certificate from a trusted third party CA (certificate authority).

I'm having problems finding documentation on how to generate a certificate request file on Windows 2012 R2 and how to then implement the certificate from the CA.

Can anyone either provide me with instructions or a link that walks you through the process? I have installed certificates for all sorts of systems from appliances, Exchange OWA systems, and IIS/Apache systems but have not been able to find how to do so with Windows Server RDP sessions.

Thanks in advance for any info,

Dan

I would like to just open mstsc type name of the farm and to connect. Currently when do this i got error that user don't have access to login but through the web page can log in.

WS 2012 R2 RDS - low resolution - blue screen problem

Hello, I have a problem with connection to the WS2012R2 with Motorola handheld with low resolution (320x320). I know, that this device has really low resolution, but our company owns quite a lot of these devices and they are quite new, so I need to solve this issue. The problem: After connection to the server (WS2012R2), I can only see blue screen. After clicking somewhere, I can see Metro interface, but when I run something through Metro or I want to jump to the desktop from Metro, the blue screen appears again. The programs and windows are executed through Metro, but I can't see them, because that blue screen. The problem is resolution. It doesn't matter on the device or the RPD client. If I have resolution lower than 500x500, this strange blue screen appears. But interesting is, that if I connect to the server with resolution bigger than 500x500 and then I take over the session with device with resolution 320x320, everything works fine. The problem appears only on the OS WS2012R2. There is no problem with Windows Server 2012 and older. I recorded this behavior. You can check it: http://youtu.be/Es0QBzDHDDw. Do you have any idea how to solve this issue? THANK YOU!

Remote Desktop sound stops working after a while.

Has anyone a solution to this problem of the sound just dropping out of a RDP connection after a day or two?

Win Server2008 (32 bit) running as a Terminal Server.

WIN 7 Clients (32 bit)

Sound is absolutely critical on the program being ran on the WIN7 clients when connecting via RDP to the Server 24/7.

But the sound just stops working on the RDP clients after a day or two.

If I minimize the RDP session and try the sound from the native windows session it works, but sound is not working within the RDP session.

and it takes a restart of the RDP session to restore sound, but then aftera day or two I get a call to say the sound is no longer working- a restart of the RDP sessions restores the sound.

I have checked the Environment sound settings in the RDP setup on the clients and have them set to play on the client, and I have checked that sound is not disabled in the Terminal Server end of things for RDP sessions.

I would really appreciate to help with this if anyone has suggestions.

.local and certificates after 1th november 2015

After the 1th of November 2015 CA's will nog longer issue SAN certificates for .local domains.

Is there a workaround for this for a Windows 2008 RDS environment? I would rather not rename the domain ending with a public TLD.

Remote Desktop Microsoft support call

I have currently set up and in production 2 x remote desktop servers, which is working fine on one session host, however we have set up load balancing, and this is the part that we are having issue with. all connections go to the one server and never the other, I cant find the problem at all.

would a Microsoft support call be able to support this kind of fix , as it may need some re-configuring and It is in a live environment?

what are your thoughts

thanks

Display slowness through RD Gateway

$

Hi,

I'm currently in training for a company that assure servers/applications for private indivuduals. They are using a RD gateway to access the servers. Most of them are running on WDS 2008 R2. However they experiment display slowness on their virtual session (pictures or scrolling in PDF, IE browsing). I would like to know if I should opt for a VDI solution here (Hyper-V with RemoteFX for instance) instead of TS, or if I should keep working on solutions to optimize the use of RD gateway (enable/disable features on each applications and so on).

I don't know if it is worth to consider a VDI solution as the best solution in our case because we are only using office software applications such as Adobe Reader, IE, Word, Excel...

For informations, the RDP Protocol version is 8.0

I'm a beginner with the remote desktop environment and I started working on it few weeks ago so I hope I have been clear. (Sorry also there might be few english mistakes I am not fluent in technical english)

Thanks !

"Deactivating" RDS servers??

$

It's my understanding that I can temporarily "deactivate" RDS hosts in a RDS cluster (without removing them from the cluster) by denying connections to the servers, then shutting down the servers.

Suppose I "deactivate" two host servers, people have not logged into them for two weeks, then I "reactivate" these host servers, will people notice any differences upon logging into the "reactivated" host servers??

What if the host server has been "deactivated" for a few months, then "reactivated"??

All MS patches and other maintenance updates would be continued on the "deactivated" servers.

We redirect as much as possible to the file server, but I know some things still get saved to the user's AppData folder on the host server per se.

Thank you, Tom

network monitoring rds cluster

We've had random intermittent un-reproducible issues of people getting kicked off the servers in our RDS cluster.

We're running Wireshark to capture traces from the host servers per se, should the gateway and connection broker servers be included??

Thank you, Tom
