VDI Deployment - Server 2012 R2

Hi,

One of my customer is having a VDI requirement and we are going to implement it using server 2012 R2. They are having few Windows XP PCs and their intend is to use those PCs as thin clients. Major concern is that they need to connect user’s personal desktop using those Windows XP machines but without booting into Windows XP. Basically they need seamless user experience with virtual desktop without interacting with Windows XP. Is there any way to achieve this? Please advise in this regard.

Thank you,

Regards,

Thisaru Perera.

How to undo the automatically start program to when a user logs on

$

I have followed this following directions (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc736643%28v=ws.10%29.aspx#BKMK_TSC) :

"Using Terminal Services Configuration

    • Open Terminal Services Configuration.
    • In the console tree, click Connections.
    • In the details pane, right-click the connection for which you want to specify an initial program, and then clickProperties.
    • On the Environment tab, under Initial program, selectStart the following program when the user logs on. This option allows you to configure an initial program for the connection.

      • If you select Do not allow an initial program to be launched. Always show desktop, then Terminal Services cannot start a specified initial program automatically when a client connects to a terminal server. Instead, the user must start programs by using the default desktop that is displayed during the Terminal Services session.
    • If you select Run initial program specified by user profile and Remote Desktop Connection or Terminal Services client, then the program that is specified in the default user profile and in Remote Desktop Connection or the Terminal Services client will run when the client connects to the terminal server.
  1. If you selected Start the following program when the user logs on, inProgram path and file name, type the path and file name of the program that you want to start when the user logs on to the terminal server.
  2. In Start in, type the working directory path for the program, and then clickOK."
  3. the problem is that now all of the server users get the specific program automatically starts when logged on and i cant undo it because i cant get to the desktop or to the "tscc.msc"

is there a way to fix it?

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

    I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

    Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

SSO issues with Windows Server 2012 R2

    • Two Windows Server 2012 R2 DCs
    • Windows Server 2012 R2 server with all RDS roles installed
    • Trusted certificate has been deployed on the server
    • Windows 8 Embedded
    • RDP protocol being used: 8.0
    • SSO GPO has been created and linked to the top level of the domain and is enforced
    • GPO setting: Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> System/Credentials delegation -> Enabled -> TERMSRV/fqdn.domain.com
    • RDS web feed GPO has been created and linked to the OU containing the users that need this subscription.
    • GPO settings: User Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> RemoteApp and Desktop Connections -> Enabled -> https://fqdn.domain.com/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspx
    • GPO Settings User Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote DesktopServices -> Remote Desktop Connection Client -> Specify SHA1 thumbprints of certificates representing trusted RDP publishers has been configured.
    • I followed guidance located here to create this GPO setting. <http://morgansimonsen.wordpress.com/2011/03/21/sha1-thumbprints-for-trusted-rdp-publishers/>

    What works correctly:

    • Users get the remote apps on the Metro Start screen.
    • No certificate warnings occur.
    • Gpresult /r shows that the GPOs referenced above are getting applied.

    Issues:

While users do get the web feed apps, they get prompted for two things when they launch an RDS app:

    • "This RemoteApp could harm your computer....".  The users have the option to say "Don't warn me again" and connect, but I'd like this to not occur at all if possible.
    • They get prompted for a user name and password. This means SSO is not working.

windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file 2012 R2

Windows 2012 R2 and I will be using this server as a Session Host server in a farm.

I have tested this out and have found out the error occurs as soon as I join the server to the domain.

Our Domain is at the functional level 2008 because I have one more DC that isn't 2012.

all works well and I can use the server as normal but as soon as I add the server to the domain I then start receiving the message 'windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

This happens for test user accounts (after RDHS role has been added) that try to use explorer.exe and some other items. It also appears when a domain administrator uses the search function (as soon as added to the domain)  at the start menu and searches for 'windows updates' and then clicks on the search result, error appears. but if you go to the control panel then the function works correctly.

My issue is that using server 2012 R2, I have setup any connections that have been disconnected and try to reconnect. All the programs seems to work fine except our internal ERP software which reconnects then opens another instance of the software. Has anyone ran into the issue and have a fix?

Virtualization Host failed to get redirection authentication

    Problem nr 1

I'm using VDI based on RDS 2012 solution. I have private and pooled collections. When external users trying to connect to VDI in the pool warning event is created.Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to get redirection authentication information from the virtual machine [XXXXPooled-X].  All roles are installed on one server. On the RD Gateway Rap I have selected Allow users to connect to any network resource. Also there is error "Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user" In most of cases user can connect but sometimes there is re connection problem. How to investigate that problem ?

    Problem nr 2

When I'm creating new VDI they created but I#m receiving warning " Remote Desktop Virtualization Host could not run the Hyper-V WMI job. Error description: 'XXXXPooled-X' failed to modify resources. (Virtual machine ID XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXX) See also Hyper-V event logs Hresult: 0x80078005

    What tiger that warning ?

Install Remote Desktop Services Failed on Windows 2012 Server

I understand RDS is not recommended on DC due to security consideration.  However since I want to play it at home, it is not much a concern.  Such scenario works fine on Windows 2008 R2.  But on Windows 2012, the RDS (session-based, have not tried VDI, but expect same result) installation always fails and is incomplete on DC.

In \Administrative Tools\Terminal Services, I only have RD Licensing Diagnoser and RD licensing manager.  The remote desktop service management service cannot be started (Error code: 0x88250001).  Is there any extra configuration needed for RDS working on Server 2012 DC or before the installation?  Thanks.

Update: this issue has been solved in Windows 2012 R2 Server.  According to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2013/07/09/what-s-new-in-remote-desktop-services-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx

"Single server RDS deployment including Active Directory. We now support running our RD Connection Broker role service on the same physical instance as an Active Directory Domain Controller.  In addition, we publishedguidelines for how RD Session Host could be used without the RD Connection Broker."

The guidelines (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839/en-us) primarily apply to Windows 2012 Server.

Server 2012R2 - Session Host Collection not failing over when forced outage

    Hello,

    This is my RDS setup:

CB1 - Broker, Web Service, Gateway (Configured HA with CB2)

CB2 - Broker, Web Service, Gateway (Configured HA with CB1)

SH1 - Session host in collection

SH2 - Session host in collection

SQ1 - SQL server for RDS services

I have been absolutely stumped by this for weeks now.  All servers are in a VMware environment, and when I force crash one of my brokers, the other one instantly takes over, and is doing as expected.  However, if I try and force boot one of my session hosts, users on the the session host that went down cannot reconnect to the other session host.  Other users are not affected.

Eventually the CB's will redirect as they are supposed to, but there is no definitive time, it's usually between 30 minutes to an hour, which is just unacceptable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Windows 2003 license server has failed, several issues, including how to check to see when users will start losing access

A small company I have worked with for 2 years has been relying on windows 2003 ts for a decade. Over the last year we converted most of the servers to server 2012 RDS and ws to windows 7. We have one group at a satellite office who are still using a local windows 2003 ts box. The license server for that 2003 ts box was converted to a vm and has now failed. They lost the ts cal paperwork so as far as I know there is no way to migrate the license server to the remaining 2003 server at the satellite office so that it could reference itself for licenses. This will force the migration of these last 2003 ts users to server 2012, unless any of you know a workaround. But on the way there I have a few questions.

[1] Is there any way to tell when the licenses issued to the current devices will expire? The only way I've been able to check that before was via the license server, and it's no longer available.

[2] Is there any way to tell if the 2003 server at the satellite office can become it's own license server? What I mean is, what if it was already put into that role years ago, and issues temp licenses for a while before the main license server was set up.

[3] If the 2003 server's license server function is activated, it'd either succeed or fail...but is there any risk in it failing? It's not going to suddenly stop accepting the existing device licenses that were issued by the original license server that has now failed?

I think I could install a 2003 server at the satellite office and have it act as a temp license server and that would give me enough time to complete the migration to 2012, but if I can use the current ts box to license itself for a few months that would be the best.

Link in Published IE won't open

I published a vendor's web page on Windows 2008 R2 (RDS) for our users.   There is a link on the webpage that launches an app (Panaya Test Player)

If I log onto the desktop of the session host and click the link that launches the player, it launches.

However, I am publishing the web page as a published app. When I click the same link in the published app, nothing happens.

What is the difference between the desktop and published app that would prevent the app from launching?  The RDS server has IE 9.

    hello,

just deployed RDS on 2012 R2.

Published first app. Can access it by going https://servername\rdweb

The app will be accessed by LAN users only.

The final goal of RDS publishing in my situation is:

To deliver published app Shortcut to user Desktop in completely transparent for user state.

I guess that the final answer in the discussion below should help me.

But it starts with installing certificate on user machine. Started to search for certificate creation and the first article mentions that it could be done by using RD Gateway manager. I guess I don't need RD Gateway for LAN use.

Please provide the steps or the link with the clear instructions for achieving the final goal.

Here is the link for instructions that I found:

PowerShell Cmdlet to rename a RDS Collection

    Hi,

I am interacting with RDS Connection Broker via PowerShell Cmdlets. I want to rename a Collection using PowerShell Cmdlets. I have tried several Cmdlets specifically Set-RDVirtualDesktopCollectionConfiguration but it doesn't allow to change the name of the collection. I know it is possible to rename using the RDS CB user interface but the requirements are to use only Power Shell cmdlets. Is it possible using cmdlets? or is there some other way to rename the collection without using RDS Connection Broker user interface?

    Thanks

I have a new RDS server, Windows 2012, all roles on one server, after logging in externally and trying to open a app (Calculator) , the first time it takes 2 minutes to open up, the second time it opens right  up and other apps too. I've noticed that it says ontop of the box that is trying to open "connecting to "server-name"", What would it be trying to resolve the first time that would take longer then normal?

    Thanks

    Differentiate access to apps

    LS,

Our clients, some of which use terminal server solutions, need to differentiate between internal and external (home) users to give or withhold access to our sensitive data application. How can they accomplish that? Is there a whitepaper or other resource that can give pointers towards a solution?

    Thank you very much.

    Hello all,

I'm attempting to setup TS Gateway in an environment.  After configuring Terminal Services, the RDC client, etc, etc.... I receive the error message stated in my subject line.

    Here is the setup:

-External facing router with IP address of (not real) 10.10.10.1
    -TS Gateway server named TS.SERVER.COM
-Edited the hosts file on the client to include an entry for 10.10.10.1 as TSG.SERVER.COM

I created the certificate for TS.SERVER.COM and specified it in TS Gateway Manager.

The RDC client is configured on a laptop (Windows 7):

'General' tab > 'Logon Setting' > 'Computer': TS.SERVER.COM
'Advanced' tab > 'Settings' > 'Use these RD Gateway server settings' > 'Server Name': TSG.SERVER.COM --- (ask for password)

Upon attempting to connect, I get the error message and have the ability to view the certificate.  It pulls the certificate information from the TS Gateway server, but when I click 'View Certificate', I see 'Windows does not have enough information to verify this certificate'.  So, just for S&G's, I exported and imported the certificate to the TS client and still got the error message.

I have never used Windows 7 as the TS client, but I am curious if there are any compatibility issues since the RDC client asks for RD Gateway information and not TS Gateway specifically.  I know they are essentially the same thing, but RD Services is a bit different than TS in Server 2008 R2.

Can anyone provide any guidance?  Hoping I'm missing something as opposed to compatibility issues.

    Thanks in advance,

    Information to call Clearinghouse

I'm struggling to get the information I need to call the Clearinghouse and get them to provide me with what I want/need.  I've inherited these 2 requirements, and I don't seem to have anyone in my organization that I can turn to for help/clarification:

    1. A purchase of 300 user CALs was completed recently.  I just have an invoice from a 3rd party, but nothing that appears to come directly from Microsoft that provides any more info.

    2. I have a Server 2003 R2 server that I want to upgrade to Server 2008 R2, and it has all kinds of user and device CALs loaded for Server 2000 and Server 2003.  It looks like the "Server 2003 TS per device CAL token" is all that is in use.

With #2, the type in the TS licensing manager indicates "Volume License".  What other information might I need to be able to make sure I can get the proper code after I upgrade?

What might I also need for #1?  Am I missing some kind of code?

I'm just hoping for any tips that might help me "crack the code"...
