Building a Windows 8.1 Gold Image for VDI

$

This question may become more of a discussion in the end as I'm after guidance, but we'll see how it goes. I'm in the process of adding pooled VMs to my existing RDS session based environment. The current environment runs on Windows 2012 R2 uses SCCM 2012 R2 and AppV 5 SP2 for all application deployments ... works perfectly. I would like to leverage this existing delivery mechanism on the pooled VM deployment as well, targeting the applications to the user on the VM rather than the VM itself. I'm planning to use Windows 8.1 x64 as my guest OS and I'm looking for guidance on building a good gold image. I would like to include the SCCM, AppV and SCEP clients in the image along with my Office 2013 AppV package. Can any one offer some guidance or resources to look at. Bing hasn't been very helpful (or perhaps I'm not asking the right question of it).

Thanks.

RDS Gateway - Why are RAP changes requiring reboot to take effect?

$

I have Win2k8R2 with RDS Gateway. I am using AD groups in a RAP to define which network resources can be accessed by users. For the most part, it's working as expected, but I am finding that changes to the AD group (e.g. remove a server) are not taking effect immediately. Users are still able to establish a new connection to a server that has been removed from the AD group. If I reboot the RDS GW, the change seems to take effect, and the users can no longer access the removed server.

While I haven't tested it extensively yet, the change may also take effect after a period of time, without requiring a reboot ... but this doesn't help me either. I need to have such changes take immediate effect.

I've searched the web without luck, this is an awkward topic to get meaningful results on. Can someone tell me definitively when changes to AD groups take effect in the RAP ... and how I can force it to take immediate effect (without a reboot)?

Thanks,
Rob

We have Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop farm with deployed RemoteApps.

We use Easyprint by group policy settings. No printer drivers are installed on RD servers.

But every time when client computer with HP LJ P2050 printer make connect to RD farm, driver for HP LJ 2050 be installed on RD server.

In result some clients print with Easyprint, and other  with HP LJ 2050 driver.

Only HP LJ P2050 printer driver installed to RD server automatically.

How to disable HP LJ 2050 printer driver installation to RD servers ?

Sorry for bad English.

Audio Quality Server Side Policy Takes Precdence?

Hello there I was reading the following article:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/36a6275f-a56f-4a01-a2d9-df44a777a682/streaming-audio-performance?forum=winserverTS

Where Dollar Wang provided an answer on Audio Quality settings. In his answer he stated that if you are going to set the audio quality it must be set on the server and client sides in order to work. What I am trying to understand what happens if we just set this on the server side only, or client side only what would be the expected outcomes?

We are hoping to be able to set policies on the server side and essentially force everyone to Medium quality without having to change RDP files; however I don't know if this will work or not.

Thanks for the answers and hope to hear from a few of you!

2008 r2 RDP SSL NLA problem "Local Security Authority cannot be contacted"

$

Hi!

I have run into an issue with RDP settings for 2008 R2 servers (all of them) whenever I enable NLA. That happens on user accounts that do NOT enforce password expiration (and so passwords are not expired) and MSTSC supporting NLA (client computers are win7 or win8).

In fact those same clients can use NLA just fine for connections to other win7/win8 workstations (domain members) using NLA, no probs!

SSL certificates are automatically issued by enterprise CA. All computers/servers have current and valid Computer certificates.

For some strange reason, I cannot enable NLA on RDP settings for any of 2008 R2 servers (various roles, ranging from physical DC running multiple roles, through dedicated virtual DC or dedicated virtual Print Servers up to dedicated Remote Desktop Services host), because all of them at once stop accepting RDP connections, always with same error message:

An authentication error has occurred.
The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted

Remote computer: server.domain.local
This could be due to an expired password.
Please update your password if it has expired.
For assistance, contact your administrator or technical support.
That same message also appears on DC (2008 R2) running the enterprise CA role ... irony ...

Please keep in mind that domain member computers running windows 7 x64 or windows 8.1 x64 can accept NLA enabled and SSL encrypted RDP traffic at same time without issues while using the same user accounts to connect.

To make it even funnier, I can set RDP on 2008 R2 acting as Remote Desktop Services server to accept only SSL RDP traffic and keep NLA disabled and all works just fine. So, it is strictly the NLA causing trouble here, but why? WS 2008 R2 unable to use Kerberos authentication for RDP?

WS 2012 R2 can accept NLA/SSL RDP connections without trouble, just as win7/win8 workstations can, so issue is narrowed down to only 2008 R2 servers (physical or virtual).

Is there a hotfix for this problem on 2008 R2? sounds to me like it is a bug in 2008 r2 regarding Kerberos authentication for RDP... is MS ever planning to fix it or we have to upgrade all servers to 2012R2 to "fix it" ...

How to make my Server2012 being a terminal server - Licensing

$

Hello,

I am very worried of how to get my Windows Server 2012 licensed as terminal server. There are several Posts but either about older Windows Server or doing something with remote sessions, but I dont want to license the clients but the server. I cannot find a feature named like '%terminal%'. There also was a manual from a blogger but there he used a kind of a hack or workaround (forcing erros etc.). That cannot  be the right way. I think there's a official way.

But maybe I just did missunderstand it. So I hope to get help here.

I have a Windows Server 2012 installed and acitivated. The problem is only two sessions for remote login are allowed. Thats why I got a terminal server license. But I do not really know what to do.

I often read about I need to install the Terminal Server Licensing Feature. I installed Features recommended in other Threads but I did not get rich of it.

Also please notice that I do not have most knowledge about Windows Server and its services. So some explanaition for "dummies" would be grateful (eg. explaination of abbreviations, shorter stepped advices, correct display name instead of "something-like-names" of buttons and menu entries, screenshots, etc.). Of course links to existing manuals are welcome but then I will have questions to this so please reply then, too.

Thanks for any help :)

RemoteApp Loses Focus - RemoteApp Window Drops Behind All Open Windows

$

Hi,

We have setup RD RemoteApp using Windows 2008 R2 for several applications within the company.

The programs that run as a RemoteApp on a client disappear, irregular. The connection to the AppServer is still active and visible in the task bar.It is just another program, which previously was located in the background, brought to the fore (eg Excel, Word, etc.).If programs are minimized, our RemoteApp is of immediate importance and it can be worked on directly.

If all other programs are minimized, and only the RemoteApp is in the maximized, the problem does not occur.

Thus, it appears that the focus is lost on the RemoteApp.Windows then puts the last used window to front.

This is happening on Windows 7 and XP Professional workstations.  I have applied all updates to the servers andinstalled RDP 7.0 on the XP machines and RDP 8.1 on the Windows 7 workstations.  I have also applied Hotfix KB 967885 on an XP machine but have not determined if this has worked yet.  If it does, great!  But this hotfix is only for XP and Vista. I still need a solution for the Windows 7 computers.

I have read the other threads but none of the suggestions have worked.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

How to check what TS servers are using the TS licensing server?

We have one Windows 2008 terminal service licensing server and many terminal servers are connecting. For some reason, we need to migrate this server to another one new licensing server. How to check what terminal servers are using this licensing server so that we can migrate this terminal server to the new licensing server before we retire the old one.

Moving RDS roles from a dead server

I've got an odd RDS 2012r2 issue here. All of the RDS roles are installed on one server and the local Server Manager keeps on saying a RDS deployment doesn't exist.  All of the services are up and running. I keep on getting these two errors in even log.

Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\havoc.gridowa.local for user administrator

Microsoft-Windows-TerminalService-RemoteConnectionManger is generating the above error. It generated this error for both of AD controllers.  That makes me suspect that some of the configuration is stored in AD.  See below...

and

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user GRIDOWA\Administrator.
Error: NULL

I had a 2012r2 server setup with all of the RDS roles. Then I had to promote it to a DC controller for a different project and removed all of the RDS Roles. I'm now trying to setup all of the RDS roles on a new server. The problem is that the new server Broker role keeps on trying to read the configuration from somewhere. Does anybody know were the broker role reads a configuration to figure out what server it should use? I've been scouring DNS and the AD configuration tree and not finding anything.

RDP audio TS 2008 R2

Hello,

We want to enable audio over RDP connection only for some users and not for everyone. Is there any chance to do that. If I go to RD Host configuration I will be able to enable sound for everyone but that is not an option.

RD Gateway 2012 r2 Custom port

Hi all,

When using custom port on RD Gateway 2012 r2, and adiding this port in RD Client protocol 8.1 RD Gateway tab, I receive error, certificate name mismatch. Certificate is ok, trusted, coresponding to FQDN. Is it possible that I receive this error because name is expected to include port number inside certificate? Or I am totally wrong...

Thanks,

Explorer.exe slow and right clicking slow

$

Hi all,

I have Win 2012 with Terminal Server running and another Win 2012 DC.

In a TS session explorer.exe takes about 20 seconds to open and the same to right click and right click on desktop has similar lag..

When on the server i.e. not in a TS session explorer.exe has no delay.

This is on a local network with GB LAN.

All other activity in the TS sessions are very fast including databases etc.

I have used procmon and it displays many "name not found" entries however I'm not really sure how to interpret and there doesn't seem to be any huge time delays when set to include explorer.exe and is not success.

Event Viewer shows no events that I could associate with this slow behavior

Any ideas on troubleshooting?

Thanks

Multiple RDS Gateway issues: Connect to remote computer not working, and certificate mismatch.

$

I have recently set up a 2012 RDS system using multiple servers.

Server01 is the RDWEB/RDGATEWAY server. Server02 is the RDCB server. Servers 03 and 04 are RDSH servers.

I have everything working fine on the inside, but have a couple of problems on the outside. I have the FQDN of the gateway server in DNS both inside and outside. The inside domain does not match the outside. I have a wildcard cert for the outside domain, and applied it to all of  the roles in RDS.

Users can connect to the gateway fine, and get no security warnings, because the cert matches. When they launch an app, the ActiveX warning comes up. That's normal. If you continue, another warning comes up because the cert doesn't match. It is showing the internal FQDN of the connection broker server. You can continue, but I'd like to get rid of that. I tried a script, Set-RDPublishedName.ps1, but then you can no longer connect, except on the inside. So I put that back.

The second issue is that the Connect to a remote computer tab isn't working. I get prompted for Gateway credentials, but then it doesn't connect. I fixed the DefaultTSGateway in IIS, but I can only connect to the RDSH servers, nothing else. But it all works on the inside.

I have ports 80,443,and 3391 open on the firewall to the gateway.

So, I am almost completely set up, but need to resolve these last issues. But I don't know what else to try.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks!

turning roaming profiles off

We have roaming profiles setup for users connecting into RD host session servers in our RD Farm.  What happens if roaming profiles are turned off in group policy for users.  Will the profile be copied to the server they log into?  Or will a new local profile be created next time they log in?

Remote App connection problem

In my environment, there are 2 servers (hkrdss01 and hkrdss02)

Cluster:hkrdss (including hkrdss01 and hkrdss02)

Server 1:hkrdss01 (also act as RD connection broker)

Server 2:hkrdss02

Remote app (VNC viewer) is offered for use.

- Everytime when establish connection, cert. need to install from hkrdss02. Is this means everytime connection to hkrdss02 first ?? And why no hkrdss01 ??

- By using XP to make connection, remote app will not launch automatically. I have to login then VNC viewer launch.

But this problem haven't in Win7. So anything wrong.

Thanks

IE11 on 2012r2 crashes when viewing PDFs in browser

Hi

I'm trying to deploy Foxit Reader Enterprise 6.1.2.1224 on our terminal services running 2012 R2 with IE11, but every time I try to view a PDF in the browser it just crashed with an access violation c0000005 in Foxitreaderbrowserax.dll (2.2.3.1216). I've also checked each setting in Foxit to see if that made any difference. I get to see the ATL 3.0 FoxItCtl message in the browser just before it crashes.

Also I found the logs from event viewer regarding Foxit PDF Reader.

Dear Team,

I'm using MsRdpClient to connect to a Remote machine through web. I wanted to capture the current stage of my MsRdpClient session. For instance, if the session is locked by the user, I wanted to get an alert " The session is locked". I have tried"IWRdsProtocolManager.NotifySessionStateChange()" method but it doesn't give the expected result. Can anyone help me to get it. Thanks in advance.

PrintIsolationHost.exe process show more processes that users

On my W2K8 R2 Terminal Server which runs Xenapp 6.5 the printisolationhost.exe shows more processes than users logged in and shows memory consumption.  The user that has the process is SYSTEM. Anyway to have this process stop, release the memory or am I stuck with it till a reboot. Also, is there a way to prevent this from occurring in the future?

Is this what's considered a memory leak?
