RDS design limitations ?

$

0

Hi

I am doing a POC on RDS and I am currently running into some limitations that I hope someone here on the forum can help answer if those are indeed limitations or if what I try to do can be achieved in another way.

Explanation of environment.

1 datacenter site (6 RDS hosts)
11 large branch sites (2-3 RDS hosts in each branch)

Datacenter is publishing applications from central systems running in the datacenter

Branches are publishing applications from system running locally on the branches. Most of these local systems for several reasons have to run locally in the branches and it is mission critical for thin clients and computers running at the same local branch to have access to those local published applications 24/7. That means also when the WAN link to the datacenter should go down.

Published applications must be able to be launched from computers and mobile devices, from the internet. This should be archived with gateways and web access servers placed only in the Datacenter. We don't want to have internet facing servers running on our branch sites. Of course those local published apps on branches can only be launched from internet when the WAN link to the datacenter is up, but this is ok. Critical part is for local clients on the same site as the RDS hosts to be able to launch them if WAN should be down.

Design considerations

Since we don't want an individual deployment for each branch, where we would need internet facing gateway and web access servers on each branch, those should be placed in the datacenter, so the best fitting design here would be the below.

Datacenter: 2 x RDS gateway/Web access servers, 2 x connection broker, license server and 6 RDS hosts.
Branches: 2-3 RDS hosts
Collections: 1 for datacenter and 1 for each of the 11 branches.

This setup however would not allow clients to start locally published applications if the WAN link is down to that branch, since users in that branch cannot reach the Web access and broker in the datacenter.

Questions:

Is there any way around this or any way it could be designed to allow users to start local published apps (not desktops) when users cannot reach the broker and web access servers.

Can you setup that if a broker is not available, the remote apps will still launch, just without load balancing and the feature to reconnect to disconnected sessions. So it should just launch directly against RDS host servers (You could probably use DNS RR to then still get some kind of client distribution across the hosts) ?

When setting up remote desktop clients on phones and computers, they require a URL feed. This is pointed to the Web access server "https://server.domain/rdweb/feed/webfeed/xxxxxx.aspx" does this mean that the web access server is mandatory to even be able to launch remote apps or is there another way to launch them that doesn't rely on the Web access server ?

Thanks

Martin

Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services - RDP client gets black screen, System Event ID 4005, TerminalServices Event ID 36

RDP users (Citrix XenApp) are getting connections refused/dropped and a black screen. This is Citrix MCS spawned terminal services on Windows Server 2012 R2. On the server seeing these messages:

After extensive Internet search with these symptoms I am coming up empty.

I reviewed EventTracker and related MicrosoftHelp but these recommendations do not seem to apply in this case or are too vague to be useful. Those articles suggest a server resource constraint (we do not see this, unless it was temporary and is no longer present when the system event occurs), registry corruption (this seems very unlikely, but even if true, how do we determine which registry hive or key is corrupt?) or a service that needs restarting (which service? we do not see any errors showing failed or stopped services).

Any other tips?

Office 365 Activation prompts on Server 2016 RDS Host

Platform

  • Server 2016 Session Host
  • Office 365 Pro Plus 2016

Hello

We successfully installed Office 2016 Prop Plus on to the session host some months ago. We have a random problem that has occurred twice now, where a user is prompted toactivate the product when they open a document first thing in the morning. The user can successfully activate the product by signing in. But if they close all products, they are promoted to  activate again when opening any of the products. The only way I could fix this for the first user a few months ago was to delete the profile  including the UPD.  The issue has begun again for anther user, and I'm trying to find a solution. There are other people having this issue out there in tech land, but with no firm answers that I can find.

Many Thanks

I already posted this question in Server2016 section - they had no idea - but they suggested to try and find a solution at the RDS-Section

I have 3 Win2016 Terminal-Server - all show the same Problem:

In the Eventlog i get:

Local printer only prints intermittently through remote desktop

Hi,

We have a very odd issue with our RD setup, and I have searched high and low for a solution, but no luck so far.

So, here's the problem.

We have a local domain with a local server running win server 2016, 5 workstations with win 10 pro and a shared network printer. Locally everything works fine and as expected. Every user also have a remote desktop into an off site server running win server 2012 to access a specific application.

Printing to our locally shared network printer through this RD session works fine sometimes, and sometimes nothing happens at all. Sometimes restarting RD helps, sometimes not. Sometimes restarting the local workstation helps, sometimes not...

The same thing happens even if we set the workstations up with locally installed printer drivers, and not run it through our local print server.

What gives me the headache is that it sometimes work, and sometimes not. There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern either. It can work well for a whole week, and then fail 3 times in a day. All the users fail to print independent of each other, meaning that even if two users can't print, the other three still can...

I hope some of you may have an idea of what the underlying problem may be or where to start troubleshooting.

Thanks a lot!

Thomas

Hi,

I'm building a RDS environment based on Windows Server 2016. When i connect via RDP i get the message below.

I need a simple way to get rid of this. I know i can tell users to just check the box to don't show again, but i want to deliver a clean configuration. Downloading the shortcut from the web access page solves it as well, but in this environment it's not simple to enroll this on hundreds of thin clients.

Can someone help me?

Printers from GPOs causing slow login times to RDS environment

Have an odd situation.  I've already loaded the printer drivers for all the printers onto each of the RDS servers, which helped decrease login times, but for users who do have printer mappings via GPO, their logins are much greater in time than those without printers.   I thought eliminating drivers would be the fix but it only helped a bit.  any other tips or tweaks anyone could suggest to try?

Problem with Windows Server 2019 RDS License

$

Windows Server 2019, Russian version, clean installation, licensed, activated, in the workgroup.

Installed the role of Remote Desktop Services, Remote Desktop Licensing Service and Remote Desktop Session Host.
RDS license server is activated, a license for 5 users is installed.

In group policies, the license server is specified and the "per user" mode is selected. The licensing diagnostic tool does not find any problems, but it shows that the session host server and the licensing server are version 2016.

With a terminal connection to the server, the following message is displayed:
"
There is a problem with your Remote Desktop license, and your session will be disconnected in 60 minutes, Contact your system administrator to to fix this problem"

There are no error records in the logs, the license manager shows that no licenses have been issued and 5 licenses are available.

Which way to dig? Where to look for the cause of the error?

Windows Server RDS Freezing with Flickering "Not Responding" in the top bar

$

We have around 15~ Remote Desktop Session Host servers of varying versions (2012 R2, 2016 and 2019) which are experiencing freezing and flickering issues with "Not Responding" appearing in the top bar and the program being unresponsive when switching between tabs. Other symptoms include screen flickering and, when in Task Manager, the tabs sometimes disappear until you roll the mouse over them. These issues started appearing after the weekend of 23rd March 2019 (23/03/19).

I have been scouring forums looking for other people with the same issue but can't find anyone with similar symptoms except someone called Chris_UKDE and his questions haven't been answered either.

At first, we thought that this was caused by a Windows Update but we have been through all of the updates and cannot find any consistent update or lack of update across the servers that seems to have caused the problem. We thought it might have been KB4489889 but after uninstalling this, the problem still remains.

We have opened a case with Microsoft and we are waiting for them to analyse some logs that they gathered on Friday and they have advised various registry fixes and disabling hardware acceleration but none of these have worked. I am taking to the forums to see if anyone else is a. having any luck with their diagnosis and b. having these issues at all(!) and c. if we manage to fix it, to share it with you so you don't have to experience the same pain we have.

The issue does NOT appear to happen in Safe Mode BUT when running a Selective Startup from MSConfig, these issues still happen, eluding that it's still a Microsoft element causing the problem. We are mainly seeing the problems in Microsoft Office programs but we do get a few issues in other Microsoft programs, such as Internet Explorer/Task Manager and also Chrome.

Most of the servers are running on VMWare ESXi 6.0-6.5 but we do have one native Windows Server with the problem. We have tried updating/uninstalling VMWare tools but this does not seem to fix anything. We also thought this might have been related to the video driver, so we booted the server with "Base Video" options in MSConfig but this still didn't fix the problems.

I am hoping that there are others in the same position as me, looking for an answer but having no forum to discuss it on, hence this post. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Install mode not working.

Hi,

I have an RDS host in Windows Server 2016 acting as an RD Session host and my session collections has User Profile Disks enabled and "Store all user settings and data stored on the user profile disk" set.

I tried to install Zoom and Slack through "change user /install" mode and also through "Install application on Remote Desktop Server" and the software gets correctly installed in the users profile I used to install them on but the rest of the users only get the Windows Menu shortcuts that point to an inexistent .exe file.

Working shortcut for the user that installed the software.
  Target  : C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\slack\slack.exe
  Work in: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\slack\app-3.4.1

What the rest of the users get in their shortcut.
  Target  : C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\slack\slack.exe
Work in: C:\Users\<user who installed the software>\AppData\Local\slack\app-3.4.1

Anything I am doing wrong or I need to consider?
Any help will be welcome.

Thanks a lot,

Allow log on through Terminal Services Policy is not replicating to Session Host Servers

So Here's my oddball issue.

We have 3 RDS session host servers: RDSHost1, RDSHost2, and RDSHost3.  We followed the wizards to set everything up, but now, we cannot get teh Group policy for "Allow log on through Terminal Services" to work on the servers.  We've provided access to a new Global Security group named "Remote Desktop Site", and enforced/link enabled the policy.  When I do the Group Policy results, the machine shows as getting the policy and having the proper values, but upon logging into the server, the members list is blank.  I've been banging my head against a wall for 3 days on this.  am I missing something?  Does RDS break RDP?

"Disconnect" button in start - removed with GPO but still visible Windows Server 2019

$

Hello,

I have a problem to hide the "Disconnect" button from the Start menu on Windows Server 2019 - Remote desktop services.

I have enabled these two GPOs:

Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands under User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar

Remove "Disconnect" option from Shut Down dialog under Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\RD Session Host\Remote Session Environment

With these, the "Shut down, sleep, etc." buttons are now hidden, but the "Disconnect" button did not want to hide. It is still there.

The test user did not have any other GPOs enabled, just one, where these two settings are.

Please, is it a bug or is there anything else to have set up?

Thanks.
Regards,
Stefan
