RDP to Azure AD joined computer

I am trying to connect to a remote computer that is Azure AD joined. Both the client and host computer are running Windows 10 version 1809. Currently I am connecting without NLA to be able to authentication myself, but I would like to connect with NLA.

According to this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/connect-to-remote-aadj-pc this should be possible, providing you use the username format "AzureAD\JeroenDeWit" to connect. However, this results in an error stating "Your credential did not work. Remote machine is AAD joined. If you are signing in to you work account, try using your work email address." I can't post a screenshot because my account is not verified yet.

Other guides like https://cloudbuilder.io/documentation/Windows10Pro-RDP-AzureADJoined/ also suggest authenticating without NLA.

Am I doing something wrong or is Microsoft doing something wrong? :)

Hello

I´ve installed Windows 2019 Server to our RDS environment, and for some time it worked well. We´re using 6 RDS servers and every day one of that freeze and needs to be restarted. Users who is logged to server works normally, but user who need to login just got black screen and freeze on that. In event viewer i found error 4005 The Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated.

If im trying to connect to server via console (on dell servers) as server admin i cant do anything because login screen is freezed too. Only way is to restart server. Remote powershell looks like working, but cant log off user. There wasnt installed any updates when it start freezing :(

Any idea how to fix it ?

SSH over RDS?

This is the opposite of the usual "tunnel xxxx service through SSH"

I'm looking for a way to tunnel THROUGH an RDS server, in order to make outbound SSH connections.

I've done some research and found some advice on creating a new collection in RDS, and a separate FQDN and port.

But this doesn't answer how to authenticate against the RDP service through SSH (I don't want an open proxy tunnel)

Need help! I have to move a small RDS server from Win2008R2 to Win2016 this weekend! Easiest way?

i need to move Remote Desktop Services off of Windows Server 2008R2 and onto Windows Server 2016 over the weekend.  It's a very basic server.  It has just the "Remote Desktop Services" role installed, and the "Remote Desktop Session Host" and "Remote Desktop Licensing" role services installed.  Nothing else is installed related to RDS.  The server does exactly one thing.  It lets about 10 users log in with remote desktop connection from their windows desktop and get provided a "remote desktop" that has exactly ONE application on the desktop.  They run that ONE application and then log off.  While the server is a member of our Active Director domain, the users are local users (local to the server).  I already have built the new Win2016 server and have installed Remote Desktop Services (with only Remote Desktop Licensing and Remote Desktop Session Host installed).  I havent done anything else beyond that.  I suspect i will have to do at least a) migrate the user accounts (I dont care if i lose any user profiles as they shouldnt have anything in them of value); b) migrate the licenses.  Can anyone help me get started? I have almost zero RDS experience! :|

Problem with Strategy group to mount printers on Remote Desktop Host

Hello everybody,

We got a problem in our company about strategy group to mount printers for users in RDS 2012 R2.

We need to set printers for user. We use Security Group for this. The user belongs to a security group, and in the strategy group, we configure a printer for a security group (with common targeting).

So we add a user to a group like that he gets printers. The user log in to the RDS, and he sees the good printers.

The problem is, when we remove the user from the security group, printers stay in the session.

In the RDS, we use roaming profile, and I think the problem come from here. When we delete the profile on the file server, to get a new one, the user does not have anymore the printer.

I also tried to create a GPO to delete all shared printers in order 1, before to mount the printers. This is working the first time, but after this, when you add the user to a group, and remove him again, he also sees the printer.

It's a big problem, because a user which doesn't belong anymore to a security group, can use the printer.

Please, could you help me to solve this problem ?

Thanks by advance

Virtual IP issues with server 2019.

We've attempted to set up up Virtual IP for our RDSH in Windows Server 2019 for a tricky application that requires it (NetDocuments NDClick). However, it appears that it doesn't work. Has this feature been deprecated in Windows Server 2019?

We did the exact same setup on our 2016-servers, and there it works perfectly fine.

Any ideas, or some updated documentation on the subject available?

Problem with mapping redirected client printers to server drivers at RDS Server 2016

Hi,

I've problems with slow printing in our new RDS 2016 environment. The problem is related to the Easy Print driver which works but is very slow in most cases. I have set the policies to not use Easy Print driver first, so if a matching driver is found it works well. But since there are numerous of printers/drivers being used in our company I would like to avoid installing every single driver needed. In our old Citrix environment we map client printers with server drivers via a Citrix policy. But I have not been able to find anything like that for RDS 2016 except using a NTPrintSubs.inf file in C:\Windows\System32\TSPDRW\ folder. But I do not get that to work and I'm not sure is it is because I have configured it the wrong way or if it is not supported anymore. I have registered the registry REG_SZ keys PrinterMappingINFName (C:\Windows\System32\TSPDRW\NTPrintSubs.inf) and PrinterMappingINFSection (Printers) in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd. And I have entered information in the file like:

[Printers]

"HP LaserJet 4200 PS" = "HP LaserJet 4200 PS Class Driver"

Is this solution still supported and is there any detailed guide somewhere regarding exactly which steps is needed? Or is there any other way of resolve this issue?

Most grateful for any help

Pelle

Is there a supported one drive client available with the new released Windows Server 2019, for using it with RDS Farm?

Especially for on demand capability, this will be a biiiig improvement for RDS Farms, since using roaming profile.

Thanks for insight

From Time to Time, some users are experiencing task bar freezing.

The only way is to log off and log in again.

It there a solution ?

RD Web Access Apps only displaying after hitting Show Details.

Hello,

We currently have a setup where we have a server with the web access and RD gateway roles installed.  They point back to a broker that has multiple applications defined that users can use through a browser (using the web access URL.)  The issue we are having is that the user will click the application, it will establish a connection, but hang until you click show details.  Once that has happened it will show the domain page and load the application.  Does anyone know how to make the application automatically display instead of having to click show details?

Thanks

Local user connected through Remote Gateway Server

Hello Everyone,

I recently took over our Remote Desktop Services and am trying to familiarize myself with it. I am noticing that some of our users while on the local network connect through the gateway server. I noticed some of them are Mac users and use the MS RDP client to connect to Remote Desktop Services. I realized that the latest update of the client forces users to go through the gateway no matter if they are on the local network or at home. Where the RDP client before the latest update didn't do that.

Also, I have a few windows users going through the remote gateway server when they are on the local network. I am not able to explain why that is happening. If someone could help me understand that it will be greatly appreciated.

Third I have noticed after the last windows updates the shift key when opening an Acess database is no longer working when using Remote Desktop. Is there a workaround for opening the Access database using the shift key?

Thank you,

Vince

Issue chaging RD Database Connection String

Hi

I'm in the midst of replacing our high availability database, moving to a new machine, and have run into an error when attempting to use Set-RDDatabaseConnectionString, getting back an error saying Exception calling "SetStringProperty" : ""

Background:

all servers are 2012 R2, fully up to date

RDS set up as High Availability

Running on the CB, Powershell opened as administrator

I initially found an issue in the SQL logs stating that the NT Authority user did not have access and corrected that - no further events appear in logs when I run the poweshell command

I changed the connection string in the registry, and upon reboot RDS did not recognise the CB

Any help greatly appreciated!

RDP Broker / Host session freeze

$

Hi Everyone,

We have one of are larger clients that was recently transitioned into a server farm using Broker with 10 hosts (approx. 75 users). Broker and hosts are all on Server 2019 Datacenter. The issue seems to crop up randomly, some users are effected after 10 minutes, some after 5 hours, regardless of host but either way their session hangs (completely unresponsive).

They have 9 offices, all are point to point VPN'd to our Datacenter where the servers are and all of them work fully out of RDP. I've turned logging on the Broker but doesn't seem to be catching much, on the other hand I am getting the following error from the hosts when a user has the "freezing" issue:

EventID 1401: The server is using version 0xA0600 of the RDP graphics protocol (client mode: 0, AVC available: 1).

EventID 266: RDPClient_SSL: An error was encountered when transitioning from TsSslStateDisconnected to TsSslStateDisconnected in response to TsSslEventInvalidState (error code 0x8000FFFF).

Event ID 1105: The multi-transport connection has been disconnected.

They always seem to get this string of reports under Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RDPClient/Operational when the hang happens. We've tried restarting all of the hosts and broker, all firewalls, etc but the issue continues and needless to say they are getting frustrated. The only two "fixes" seem to be booting their session, or waiting the 30+ minutes for the session to come back.

I've done a fair bit of research but most paths seem to lead to a dead end, any insight provided would be massively appreciated. I can upload all the logs I've collected if need be.

Thanks

RDS sessions freeze, Able to shadow (With given permission)

Hi Everyone,

I have been working on a problem with our single RDS server for a while now and hope some of u are able to help me out. (just remote app, no desktop sessions)

Alot of users are reporting that their sessions are getting stuck/frozen and need to reopen the application from the RDweb/RDP file to continue working. I saw that once a user experienced this i could take over the session with shadowing and permission could be given from the user while the session is frozen. So i'm guessing it has to be something about the graphics? There is no black screen however. Just a still image of the last frame. If i take over i can move it around and do stuf but stil not visible to the user.

The problem usually starts when they lock their workstation and come back from a short break 5/15 minutes later. Unlocking the workplace would then show the stuck session. Idle times and disconnection times are not to worry about. All above 6+ hours.

I could post lots of logs. But if u would like to see any in specific i would post them.

Specifications:

  • Windows server 2016 with latest updates from March. (KB4489889) & (KB4485447)
  • All roles are on one server. Broker, Gateway, Session host, RDWEB
  • Licening is on another server. And shows no problems with diagnoser. (Just to be sure)
  • Clients work on windows 10 1803. RDP version is: 10.5 using HP thin clients.
  • 80+ users in terminal.
  • It's a fysical server with enough space, memmory and CPU. Speed 10gb.
  • The problem usualy happens once a day er person. Good weeks show only once a few days

Windows 2016 RADC URL rejects credentials. An Error has Occured.

$

Good Morning,

Hoping to get some insight on troubleshooting this.

I have a brand new single instance Windows 2016 Standard Remote Application and Desktop Server.

The server hosts the following roles;

Gateway
Licensing
Connection Broker
Web Access

The server is protected via a public CA Cert and works as far as being a Gateway, and Web Access is concerned.  Users can connect thru it to other servers via gateway and can open and launch applications via the Web page.

When users try the add the URL https://servername/RDWeb/Feed/Webfeed.aspx  in the RADC applet in control panel,  they receive an error that they are using Incorrect Credentials.  When they type in their credentials in either DomainName\username or username@domainname format it errors out and they need to try again or cancel.

I have looked in the event log in the server and while I can see the transactions happening in the IIS logs,  the end user never is allowed to log in or receives apps.

Could use some insights here?

If I type the URL correctly in a web browser,  I receive a login prompt which once submitted provides me what appears to be an encrypted token.

Guide for transitioning from Win2008R2 RDS to a Win2012R2/2016/2019 RDS?

$

I have a Windows Server 2008R2 server that i installed Remote Desktop Services on many years ago.  It only has two role services installed.

Remote Desktop Server.  It is as basic a configuration RDS can be.  It only has Remote Desktop Session Host and Remote Desktop Licensing Server installed.  Nothing else.  And all i do is create local users, put them in the Remote Desktop Users group and i let them remote to this server using "Remote Desktop Connection" in Windows 7/10.

How do i replicate this environment as closely as possible in Windows 2012R2/2016/2019?  I see that those versions introduced a bunch of new features and role services, all of which look like stuff I DONT NEED. :) I dont need a connection broker or a web server!  None of that. I just want what i already have today and nothing more.  Is that possible?

Has anyone written a guide for building a bare bones RDS server on the newer OS that doesnt have all this new stuff?

VDI Shutdown inactive machines

Hello,

Is there any documented approach to minimize the number of running VDIs?

I'd like to :

  1. Schedule starting the machines early in the morning.
  2. Schedule shutting down the machine after working hours.
  3. Allow the users to start their machine without admin support.

1 and 2 are easy, my concern is with 3. or any other recommended approach.

Thanks
