RD session connections windows server 2016 - two computers couldn't connect in the amount of time allotted

$

we have RDS installed in Windows 2016 standard edition and use session-base desktop deployment.

It was working fine for about one year. About two weeks ago, we started to have the following issue:

This computer can't connect to the remote computer.
The two computers couldn't connect in the amount of time allotted. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support.

When this issue happens, we find some users are disconnected in the RDS-Collections-QuickSessionCollection. But we cannot log/sign off those users, they are always showing there.

BTW, we can sign of those users in the Task Manager-Users.

We can solve this issue by restarting the server. How to fix it without restarting the server?

Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

When making NLA based RDP connection to Windows Server 2008 R2 member server ( RD Session Host without any license server etc), I am getting an error An Authentication Error has occurred (Code: 0x800004005). It happened for no reason, i.e. no configuration changes at all.  It registers no event ID inside Application and System event log.  RDP without NLA is fine.

Let me know if someone managed to resolve similar issue?

CPU fair share scheduling - What CPU ?

I understood that fair share is based on CPU load. But what CPU ?

Currently administering a farm of W2008 R2 RDS. Fair share being enabled by default. Each server having 12vCPUs.

On occasion some users are complaining about sluggishness (network and Disk I/Os being ridiculously low). I have no explanation about the sluggishness except for different threads from different users running on one single overloaded vCPU. Despite the fact that the 12vCPUs are not all overloaded

So, How Fair share actually works across multiple vCPUs ?

Is it a mature/better technology in Windows 2016  ?

Remote Desktop users getting disconnected every 9-10 minutes

I have a server running Windows Server 2016 Standard in a WORKGROUP environment.  This server has the Remote Desktop Services role installed with 20-CAL's.  Users can login remotely to access applications.  Everything works great for the first 9-10 minutes  The problem is after 9-10 minutes their RD session is disconnected.  Sometimes it reconnects and other times they have to log back in.  All the server gpedit.msc settings for timeouts are defaulted and have not been changed.

On the same network we have another old server running Windows Server 2008 in the same WORKGROUP environment with Remote Desktop Services and 5-CAL's and the users don't experience any disconnections.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might be able to resolve this?

Problem with RDS server 2016 and dwm.exe crash

Hello!

After windows update last weekend our user complains about freezing RDS sessions. After some investigation in the application logs on the RDS session host (windows 2016 server standard) i can see that the Windows Desktop Manager restarts for the users repeatedly. Sometimes as often as every 5 minutes.

The windows update was KB4343884. I have tried rolling back, but the problem remains.

I have checked the version of the local dwmcore.dll and its 10.0.14393.1715.

On the other servers that are patched the version is 10.0.14393.2457

Its really annoying for the users, anyone had this problem? Any ideas what to do?

The following fatal alert was received: 40

I have a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 which I use as a Remote Desktop Server. Following a reboot yesterday morning the System event logs are full of the following entries "The following fatal alert was received: 40" and "The following fatal alert was received: 70".

I have rebooted again but this hasn't cleared the issue. The server is fully patched. Can anybody suggest what is causing this?

Kind regards

David

Having to restart RDS Service each morning

Hey,

We are running Server2012 Standard, with all patches installed.

Each morning I need to restart the RDS Service as users get a 'Cannot connect to the remote computer as an error occured' message

There's nothing in any event logs, and once i restart the service it it's fine for the whole day... Until the next day, when it happens all over again

Has anyone dealt with this before?

Thanks For your help!

Hi,

our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Thanks.

RD Virtualization Host - Multiple Domains

Hello, we current have a full RDS deployment (Connection Broker, Virtualization Host, Web Server, etc.) in our corporate domain, serving up VDI RemoteFX VMs for our corporate users with no issues. We also have another domain that is untrusted (currently physical machines) that is used by non company users.  We want to move these machines into our VDI Deployment using our existing RD Virtualization Hosts. We are not sure how this works with multiple domains? (Can RDS serve up VMs in multiple domains?)  The new VDI desktops (and I assume so would the Thin Clients) would be in untrusted domain.  Do we need / or can we, setup a second connection broker in the untrusted domain?  Or how do we make the connection work?  I can't find much documentation on this to see how this would work.  I know in VMware View you just setup a second Connection Server, but not sure in Hyper-V/RDS world?  Anyone have thoughts on this?  Thanks!

How do I setup session based desktop deployment?

I am quite new to this and had one previous failed attempt so I'm going to go here for help. I would like a simple tutorial to set session based desktop deployment.

I am currently running windows server 2016 with only AD DS added.

Azure MFA only for external users coming from RD Gateway and no MFA for internal Users

Team,

Thanks in advance, I've configured RDS environment with session host, web access, connection broker and a RD gateway server.

I've enabled MFA calling through Azure MFA Server using the below link which Microsoft suggests. But I wanted MFA calling for external users and not when users coming from internal IPs.

In MFA console we have trusted IPs tab where we have to put in the users IP or IP range, but here as the authentication is sent by the RD gateway server everything is ignored by the MFA server and for internal users as well I'm getting MFA Calling.

Has anybody tried it before? This cannot be achieved through Azure MFA but can be achieved through NPS policies but unable to achieve it.

RDP session disconnected reason code 214750036

Remote desktop users keep getting disconnected for no reason, no error is received on the client's computer and they are not able to reconnect until the local administrator logs in.

Looking at the event viewer, "RDP session disconnected reason code 214750036" is logged when the problem happens but I haven't been able to find anything related to this message.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

RDP won't connect to IP or DNS name unless .local is added but ping resolves the name

I'm having an unusual issue and I'm not able to pinpoint where it is coming from.

We have a network with Hyper-V servers and VLAN tagged NIC cards on the servers and routing between them.

I am able to RDP directly to our second DC but not to our PDC.

If I ping DC1, I get a response.
If I ping DC1.domain, I get a response.
If I tracert DC1.domain, it follows the relevant route.
If I nslookup DC1.domain, it pulls the correct IP from the DC1 itself and DC2 if I specify it.

If I try RDP to DC1, connection times out.
If I try RDP to DC1.domain, connection times out.
If I try RDP to DC1.local, it connects fine.

Anyone know where to start my search for how to resolve this issue?

RemoteApp on Windows 2016 VM Server on Azure

$

We are looking to move our current hosted solution to Azure.

Our  current solution in the cloud consists of  three Windows 2008 R2  VM’s in a workgroup   One SQL Server VM – heavily dependent on SQL Database Mail and SQL Scheduled Jobs , One Web Server VM, One RDP server that uses RemoteApp to distribute a Windows Client application after connecting to a VPN.  We also use the RDP server to run several windows applications (windows service and scheduled task).   I had originally posted to the Azure VM forum and was referred to this forum for RDP issues.

With Windows 2008 R2 server I was easily able to create RemoteApp. .rdp files (without RDWeb)  for our Windows application and use those .rdp files to distribute to our customers.  The user accounts were created using Computer Management / Local Users / Groups.

From my understanding is that the functionality changed with Windows 2012 R2 and later.  To be able to set up RemoteApp, the machine must be joined to a domain as this give you a setup UI to publish your application(RDWeb to create rdp file).  This would mean two additional servers (domain controllers) and incur additional costs. The user accounts would then have to be created on the Azure DC Active directory.  Is RemoteApp supported on a Windows 2016 workgroup VM in Azure without using RDWeb to publish the application?   I found an article on the forum that talks about creating / editing  your own rdp file and registry entries in lieu of a UI.  I also found a third party application (RemoteApp Tool) which creates a .rdp file.   Could we use those methods and still be supported by Microsoft?   I also see there was a RemoteApp Service on Azure that is been now discontinued.   It has been replaced with Citrix Virtual App Essentials.   From my understanding, this too would require domain controllers at additional cost.  Are there any better solutions to achieve our goal? Will we be able to set up a VPN connection for our customers to the RDP (RemoteApp) server on Azure with any of the solutions?

Thanks,

Installing software on Remote Desktop Server Farm

Flickering of Icons on the Desktop - Fix Question

$

The solution below obviously fixes the issue of flickering desktop icons when you open a word, or excel document from the desktop of a redirected folders environment:

add NoRemoteChangeNotify registry entry(REG_DWORD) to/with value 1 in below location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

But .................. and a BIG but ....

It creates another issue with mapped drives.  We have applications that write data to the UNC path of the mapped drive.  Obviously with the fix mentioned above the file does not appear in the mapped drive location without pressing F5.  Because the functionality of our applications rely on the respective file being present, pressing F5 is not a workable solution.

What else can I do, is there some kind of function, script, GPO or registry entry that will continuously take care of mapped drive refreshes?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Everything was working well but we had to restart our servers because me moved them physically ( 1 meter further ) . So we restarted our 2 servers ( DC & RDS ) and after the restart , users could login on the RDS but all the mapping to the DC are lots ( user has to give each time their login adn password to map )

When looking in the RD licensing manager we saw 2 red buttons

What could be the oriin of this problem and how could we solve it ?

Thanks in advance

Best regards
