Remote desktop using Azure NPS extension

Hi

not sure if this is the correct area or if it needs to go to an azure forum

I have recently installed Azure NPS Extension onto our current remote desktop gateway setup. everything seems to work fine, I am able to enter my credentials and then approve the connection on the phone however after that the credentials prompt comes up again. it does go through after entering it again however it is an extra step which doesn't happen when using it without 2 factor.

I cannot find anyone having the same issue. please let me know if you have any ideas why the prompt would come up twice.

thank you.

Hi Guys,

Will it work if add an RDSH 2016 to my RDS 2012 R2 Environment?

Just to clarify as it seems I'm unable to make my additional RDSH 2016 to work. It can hosts RemoteApps but I cannot launch any of it. It says:

This computer can't connect to the remote computer.

Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator.

Connection to a RemoteApp program from within an RDP session does not work if the user has a startup program defined in the user profile

Hi,

Connection to a RemoteApp program from within an RDP session does not work if the user has a startup program defined in the user profile.

I'm using Windows Server 2012 R2. I used calculator as the RemoteApp program to verify that it's not a problem in my custom program.

1st scenario - works:

1. Connect to the server using RDP (no RemoteApp) --> Desktop opens
2. From the RDP session, try to make an RDP connection using RemoteApp. I'm using a pre-configured RDP file with remoteapplicationmode and remoteapplicationprogram parameters and I'm connecting to the same server in this example --> The RemoteApp screen appears and after entering credentials the RemoteApp program opens

2nd scenario - does not work:

1. Using an admin account, on the server, go to local user management and set a startup program for the user that is used for the test, cmd.exe for example (Environment tab --> Starting program --> Start the following... --> Program file name ="cmd.exe").

2. Connect to server with the test user --> cmd.exe opens

3. Try to connect with RemoteApp like step 2 in the previous scenario --> the RemoteApp screen appear but the program does not start, after a while the session closes.

I checked using ProcMon and the Event Viewer and I see that a connection is established, but for some reason the program does not start (rdpinit.exe should start the program, but it doesn't - I don't see any call for CreateProcess).

Is this a bug in Windows?

Thanks,
Gabriel

I currently have a 2016 RDS Virtualization deployment and would like to also expand to have a session host as well. Im unable to add a session host as theAdd RD Session Host Servers button is greyed out. When running a powershell command:

add-rdserver -Server SH01 -Role RDS-RD-SERVER -ConnectionBroker CB01

add-rdserver : A session-based desktop deployment is not presentI receive the error:

Can a session host and virtualization host be in the same deployment? If it can, how do you add a session host?

The virtualization and session host are on different servers (virtualization host is a physical while session host is a virtual)

TS: firewall failed due to missing firewall credentials

So out cert expired on our ADFS and we did not change it in time. this is now fixed but after this we cant connect to TS servers from outside company. Internal access is working fine.

Error from outside: Your computer can’t connect to the remote computer because authentication to the firewall failed due to missing firewall credentials. To resolve the issue, go to the firewall website that your network administrator recommends, and then try the connection again, or contact your network administrator for assistance.

Anyone have an idea? i get only a few hits on google

Administrator lock out when RDP to trusted domain

$

If I use my Domain1\Login1 to RDP into a trusted domain server (say Domain2\Server2), I receive a lock out message on the Domain1 Domain controllers that Domain1\Administrator was locked out from "Server2".

For one, we don't use the Administrator account in either domain.  It has been renamed.

Secondly, I can't figure what is going on with Domain2\Server2 that it would be trying to do something back to Domain1 as Administrator.

On Domain2\Server2 I see a corresponding:   Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME"  -- I am not sure if this is a cause or an effect.

This happens on servers in Domain2 where we are running RDS and it also happens if we just RDP into a server desktop.

Any ideas?

Remote Desktop Connection

I am having trouble logging into my remote desktop. The system says my credentials and password are incorrect yet I have never changed them. I fail to understand how this happened and why.

During RD session, video-window, on remote desktop, interferes with the GUI events of the app that hosts the video...

There is a Windows PC which is running an application that displays video from a camera. The video updates at between 10 and 25 Hz. When I'm at that PC, the application is very responsive. If I remote-desktop to that same PC, then the application becomes extremely sluggish; scrolling over the app's menu-bar reveals that the app is not responding to mouse-events (while scrolling over the menu-bar of, say, Windows Explorer behaves normally). However, if (within the RD session) I reposition the remote application's window such that the embedded-video is off-screen, then the application starts responding to mouse-events normally.  Similarly, dragging another window (on remote PC) over the video-window also causes the app to run freely.

This behavior makes it impossible to use the video-application on the remote desktop.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

I need to allow four users to work remotely by connecting from outside the organization to Server 2016.

Which role is needed to accomplish this, is it Remote Desktop Services or Remote access?

Thanks in Advance.

Unable to delete the Userclass.dat as it is open in SYSTEM

I have tried to delete the Userclass.dat file precisely as it is annoying to get deleted throwing pop up as : the userclass.dat is used by SYSTEM.

Here are the troubleshooting that I did so far:

1. Tried to delete the user from the User Profiles in System Properties but cannot fine that profile precisely as there are so many Unknown account.

2.deleted the profile from Profile List in registry and rebooted the system.

3. tried to disable inheritance to the .dat file and removed the SYSTEM from the Security.

Let me know what needs to be done next.

RDS 2016 - Outlook 2016 issue

Just want to know if anyone has seen this problem before:

I have an RDS Server (2008 R2) with Outlook 2016 as RemoteApp connecting to an Exchange 2010 on-prem server. It was working fine until we did some updates on the Exchange server (Server 2008 R2 Updates + Update Rollup 21 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3). Now we are getting the following error for any new users:

"Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete the action"

I've spooled up a new Server 2016 for testing. Outlook works perfectly fine until installing the RDP Service. I'm not sure if this is some sort of conflict with RPC of HTTP, which I believe RDS and Outlook will use.

Any suggestions??

RDS 2016 session host .local /wildcard certificate mismatch

$

I have 3 2016 servers.

Server1.domain.local is the gateway/broker/rdweb  server

Server2.domain.local is a rd session host

Server3.domain.local is a rd session host.

The problem is I have a wildcard cert, in dns the clients connect to rds2016.domain.com (which points to server1.domain.local/the gateway) but when the gateway redirects the cilents to either server 2 or 3 the .local name shows up and prompts them with cert errors.

I found this post that allowed me to change the certificate on the session host servers to the wild card cert using wmi
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/cfa7d283-4b1b-4da6-8589-82059b31d258/local-fqdn-shown-when-connecting-to-session-host-through-rdgateway?forum=winserverTS#d2db4606-ee08-4e8d-ad1f-44ba16b0eceb

Get certificate thumbprint using powershell:Get-Childitem Cert:\LocalMachine\My

Set new thumbprint on server:wmic /namespace:\\root\CIMV2\TerminalServices PATH Win32_TSGeneralSetting Set SSLCertificateSHA1Hash="Thumbprint"

But the problem after running that the rdweb published apps show an error 0x607 and the .local servername again when trying to connect.  Since the wildcard cert does not match the .local name it won't let the client open the rdweb published app.  Basically running the wmi command fixed the cert errors for the full remote desktop session but broke rdweb.

Anyway to change the name the session hosts are exposing to the clients from (ie from server2.domain.local to server2.domain.com)?

RDP randomly disconnects and you can not reconnect

Hello, I have this problem and I have no idea how to solve it. Windows server 2016 has been installed for several months. Now for about a month there is a problem that for no reason during work it disconnects the remote desktopsand you can initially connect again until the end of the day but the next day, you can no longer connect through the remote desktop and the only thing that will help is the server restart. What can be done with it, had someone such a problem that after disconnect and after some time you can not reconnected?

All users connect from outside to this server. It has license for 4 users (and exactly 4 users are connecting to this server). And all four users has the same problem.

RemoteApp Disconnected 2012R2 Environment

Hi,

I have scoured the internet for a solution to this issue however I have had no luck and have spent a lot of hours trying to get this sorted.

We have a client who uses RDS via RemoteApps.

Their environment is as per below:

Broker Server

Licensing Server

Gateway Server

4 x RDS Host Servers

All servers are running Server 2012 R2

Users experience issues of receiving the below error message when they try to launch an application via the RemoteApps webpage:

When they sign out and back in it works fine.

I have investigate the error logs and only receive the generic Microsoft event ID's 40 / 41 and reason codes which give no valuable information.

I am leaning towards this being a networking issue but am unsure.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Cheers,

How to force RDS to use TLS1.1 or 1.2 for Windows server 2008 SP2

$

Hi All

Is there any way to force the RDS of Windows server 2008 SP2 to use TLS1.1 or 1.2?

Microsoft has released an update to add TLS1.1&1.2 support for RDS of Windows server 2008 SP2, we can safely disable TLS1.0 without breaking RDP connection after installed this update. However, since many other applications on server still need to use TLS1.0, we have to remain TLS1.0 for other applications and force RDS to use TLS1.2 to meet PCI DSSv3.2 policy.

As checked RDP-TCP property with "tsconfig", there is only 3 options for security layer(RDP security layer/Negotiate/SSL/TLS1.0) and cannot set TLS1.1 or 1.2 here.

Is there any way to set it in registry, group policy or other places?

Delegate standard user ability to log off RDS Sessions - RDS 2016

$

From researching there doesn't seem to be a clear cut way of delegating this role.

The best idea I've came across is something like this but would probably require the user to connect to the server still.

https://idefixwiki.no/2016/02/12/delegate-logoff-permission-rds-2012/

Anyone have any better solutions to this? Really must be a better way than that.

thanks,

Andrew

RemoteApp "Jumping" to Second Screen

$

Setup

I have Server 2016 set up with Remote desktop Services.  Its primary function is to deploy one particular application, installed on the server, with RemoteApp.  The Configuration for the workstations is being pushed out with a GPO, and RemoteApp shortcuts are successfully being placed in the Start Menu.  We have approximately 50 Users utilizing this application, and for 95% of them this works perfectly.

Issue

While running the application on one monitor (right), under certain circumstances, the application will jump to the second monitor, maximize, and "appear" to be frozen (no response to mouse movements). We have a remote control software used for troubleshooting.  When we shadow the console on the users workstation, you can clearly see the application is open on the second monitor (left).  When we shadow the users' session on the server, the application appears to be maximized on the right.  Restoring the window restores the window to the right monitor, both on the workstation console (jumps) and server session, and regains control.

Attempted Resolutions

We have attempted video driver updates, alternate graphics adapters, complete windows updates, restoring older versions of mstsc.exe (for Windows 10 1803 users, per another hotfix), and switching primary monitors and resolutions.  The problem still arises.  Problem only exists for particular users for dual screens.  User A and User B have identical hardware and dal screens, but problem only exists for User A.  User C has a different make & model desktop, and User D has a laptop with a docking station, and both C & D experience the same issue.  We cannot duplicate the issue on workstations that aren't experiencing it already.
