RemoteApp resolution very low

$

Hello All,

Weird situation here:

I have one TS server running 2008 R2.

One of our satellite offices uses it to connect to HQ to run an application. That office has about 10 workstations. On 8 of the 10 workstations, the remoteapp is very low quality resolution. Blocky text, mouse pointer is a black box, etc. On the other two workstations, everything is fine.

All 10 workstations are almost exactly the same make and model, if not exactly the same. Same OS, etc.

I initially pointed fingers at the settings on my terminal services server, but since not all workstations have the issue, I am now at a loss.

Everything was fine just a few weeks ago. I cannot confirm, at this point, if all workstations have the same exact MS updates, or, if it was an update that caused the issue.

Besides that, is there anything else I can check to see where my issue is?

maximum number of supported connection brokers in 2012 R2

Hi all,

just trying to get some clarity around the maximum number of connection brokers it is possible to have with RDS on 2012 R2.

Much of the documentation have seen states "at least two RDCB servers" - which makes sense...

however this document - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/rds-supported-config seemingly states that 3+ connection brokers in HA is not supported on 2012 R2 at all - which seems contradictory to other documentation.

Is anyone able to provide any clarity on that ?

Server 2016 End Disconnected Session for particular account not working

I am using a remote Server 2016 VPS from a provider and wish to configure a  user account Test to terminate after 1 hour of being disconnected. From the server Admin account I have accessed Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups-> Users -> Test and in the Sessions tab of account properties set Ends a Disconnected Session to 1 hr. However, the disconnected Test session does not close after 1 hr of disconnection. (As shown by Task Manager-> Users which shows the Test account in a disconnected state after more than 1 hr of disconnection.)  I have restarted the server and disconnection still does not occur after 1 hr. Is there something else I need to do?

Webclient (HTML5) issue connecting to Linux (Ubuntu) desktops

Hi,

In our environment we have a number of Linux, Ubuntu, servers (hosted on Azure) that admins need remote access to.  When a Linux desktop is needed we use X2Go opened to a XFCE session, the X2Go application is a published app on the RDS environment.  This works great when the “thick” RDP client is used however we’d like to use the new HTML5 web client and this is where we seem to hit the issue.  The X2Go application opens up nicely in the browser (Edge) and we can connect to the server where the Linux desktop appears.  However although the mouse works the keyboard does not, the only key that works is “enter”.   To check this wasn’t a X2go/XFCE issue we’ve also tried XRDP using the standard Windows RDP client and this produces the same result, although in this case it is not possible to enter anything into the XRDP login screen.  As a final sanity check we’ve also deployed a new Ubuntu server with nothing additional installed other than XRDP and the result was the same.

Anyone else using the new HTML5 web client and seeing anything like this behaviour?

Sizing guidance for RDCB, RDWeb and RDGateway

Hi all,

putting together a HA RDS farm design - and im having trouble finding guidance on sizing for RD Connection brokers, RD Web and RD Gateway servers.

I get the for the session hosts, it is very dependant on what is running within the sessions and hence, the lack of hardware sizing guidance.

For the other roles it would be nice to have some sort of general advice - i.e. 1 connection broker per 1000 users, 1 RDGateway per 200 users etc....

Does anyone know if sizing guidance such as this exists? (and I just haven't been able to find it)

Black Screen for Users in RDS 2016

$

Windows Server 2016 RDS setup with one DC and 3 session host servers, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer. This is a session-based deployment for RDP sessions.

Occasionally (that means approx every 7-10 days), new users logging in to RDS get a
black screen. That is, they can successfully log in but then see only a black screen, no task bar, nothing. Users can see moving mouse cursor, and they can bring up the Task Mgr with Ctrl+Alt+End. Sometimes, after 10-15 minutes the user desktop becomes visible, but most of the
time it never does.

Normally, every additional user logging in after this occured also gets the black screen. The only solution is to reboot this session host server.

The servers are updated to PT (July 2018).

Note - I installed an additional session host server recently and noticed that this phenomena does not seem to happen on that one (at least not as frequent). Same update status but was installed from later download media (evaluation edition download from internet, then converted to Standard edition by inputting a license). They do, however, all show the same build number in the settings app: 14393.2248.

So is it recommended to make a new install for all session host servers? Do not really understand why I would have to do that. They have the same update level, just one was installed from a later base media - but it's the same edition. Doesn't a server end up with an identical setup no matter what original media file was used, with all the updates? That should be the point of the updates, or not?

Or is there any other underlying reason for the black screen phenomenon which I should address?

2012 R2 RDS double login

Hello

We have been running RDS for years and years without issue. Back in march we decided to hold of on all patches for this credssp patches to smooth out. We just recently started testing out fully patched clients however now we are receiving a double prompt trying to log into anything with RDS. I am only ever seeing this on patched clients. We tried patching 1 TS box but that did not help.

Any ideas?

RDP Farm SAN Certificate

Hello,

I set up an RDP farm with Broker.  We are running server 2008 R2.

I tried to make a SAN cert in our Enterprise CA but every time I adopt the cert for the RDP connection it still says Certificate Mismatch.  It shows the server name on the RDP Cert and not the farm name.

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/isablog/2011/10/09/how-to-generate-a-certificate-with-subject-alternative-names-san/

This is the article I used.   Has anyone else had this problem before?

Thanks,

Windows 7 using Remote App & RDP logging into Win 2012 Server - Corrupt colors

$

The colors are off (yellow text & black back ground in Windows Explorer) on some users when they log into a Windows 2012 server via RDP & using the Remote App..  It only happens from a Windows 7 machine, and only on that particular Server, and only certain users.  When I use RDP or the Remote App from a Windows 10 machine (same user), no issues.

I've tried updating the registry key via GPO to go with the Aero theme

I've tried deleting everything in the  C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\aero\VSCache folder to let the server rebuild, but there was nothing there.

I've changed the C:\Windows\Resources\Ease of Access Themes\basic.theme file to only go with the Aero theme not the Aero.lite theme.

I've done this "SFC /scannow" and "DISM /online /cleanup-image /resorehealth"." -

Nothing has worked..  I'm about a week away from just creating a new server and migrating the data... but that's not giving me a reason why or a way to prevent it from happening again.

Start Menu Not Working Frequently for Users (RDS 2016)

Windows Server 2016 RDS setup with one DC and 3 session host servers, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer. This is a session-based deployment for RDP sessions.

On 2 of these servers, the Start menu does not work most of the time. Users logged in to RDS cannot use it. You click and nothing happens, not even after many minutes. Search function does not seem to work either at this time, so it might be a general UWP app problem.

Seems that it does work for a short time after a session host server has been rebooted but latest the next day it doesn't work.

I find lots of posts, mostly years old, on Windows 10 start menu not working but cannot necessarily apply the "fixes" in a RDS scenario. And most of them seem to say (years ago) that the latest Windows Updates fixed the issue. But it isn't fixed as of right now, July 2018.

What is the reason for this and is there any fix or handling for it?

Administrator lock out when RDP to trusted domain

$

If I use my Domain1\Login1 to RDP into a trusted domain server (say Domain2\Server2), I receive a lock out message on the Domain1 Domain controllers that Domain1\Administrator was locked out from "Server2".

For one, we don't use the Administrator account in either domain.  It has been renamed.

Secondly, I can't figure what is going on with Domain2\Server2 that it would be trying to do something back to Domain1 as Administrator.

On Domain2\Server2 I see a corresponding:   Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME"  -- I am not sure if this is a cause or an effect.

This happens on servers in Domain2 where we are running RDS and it also happens if we just RDP into a server desktop.

Any ideas?

Remote App Blackscreen, RDP works fine

$

I have an external user who connects to a remote app via RdWeb. They had no issue until last week and no changes were made on the terminal servers.

THE ISSUE:

When they launch the remote app, the user gets a black screen if you click details. They can RDP to the server fine (using the Connect to another PC tab in IE).

The mstsc.exe process has to be killed via Task Manager.

Another user in their office is having no issues.

Things I have tried:

1. Had the user with issues try from the PC of the user without issues. Same problem.

2. Had the user connect to 3 instances of this remote app in 3 different collections. 1 uses User Profile disks. 1 does not and sits on the same network as the previous. 1 does not use profile disks and sits in our DMZ. The user can get a successful connection from the server in the DMZ but the speed is an issue.

3. Looked for a profile disk for the user on the network share and there was none (the user is in our Guest child domain which is not a 2 way trust), there was no profile disk, but there WAS a profile with the username and .backup on the actual terminal server.

4. Deleted the local user profile on the both internal servers and had the user try again. Same result.

5. Had the user RDP to the server and launch the app and it worked without issue.

I am thinking it is related to the user's terminal server profile because the issue is repeatable from another user's workstation. However, the user is able to RDP to any of the terminal servers and work fine.

The difference in the server in the DMZ and the internal servers is that the server in the DMZ uses a different encryption/compression policy. The internal policy forces the encryption level to "low", does not use an encryption algorithm and is set to not require NLA. The server in the DMZ was specifically created with a different encryption policy to resolve a previous issue with external users getting a black screen to the internal servers. The internal servers go through a Cisco WAAS in some cases and the internal policy was set to the recommendations for this setup.

Keep in mind though, that everything worked fine last week and everything still works fine for everyone except this single user.

Any insight or steps for further troubleshooting would be appreciated.

Hide Settings Pages Windows Server Datacenter 2016

Hi

I am currently setting up a 2016 RDS server deployment using version 1607. The problem we are having is the trying to hide individual settings pages in the immersive control panel when using gpedit.msc Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates> Control Panel > Settings Page Visibility. However it doesn't work with version 1607. Is there anyway to get this to work as we need to open up display and screen saver settings as would like our users to access this. Currently we are having to lock down both the control panel and the immersive control panel using User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Prohibit access to control panel and PC settings as we dont want them to access other stuff in PC settings such as windows update

Can anyone provide any suggestions\workarounds

Flickering of Icons on the Desktop

$

Hi there,

I have asked this question many times before as we seem to be experiencing some problems with icons flickering on the desktop on our RDSH Servers.  It started way back in server 2012 and since upgrading to server 2016 we still have the same problem.  The flickering occurs on the local LAN and from remote locations.

What have I done so far and it doesn't resolve the situation:

1.  Ensured that bitmap caching is turned off.

2.  dword NoRemoteChangeNotify.

3. Always show icons, never thumbnails

4. Enabled Always show menus

5. Enabled Display file icon on thumbnails Enabled Display file size information in folder tips

6. Enabled Display simple folder view in Navigation pane

7. Enabled Display the full path in the titlebar (classic folders only)

8. Disabled Hidden files and folders Do not show hidden files and folders Hide extensions for known file types

9. Disabled Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) Enabled Launch folder windows in separate process

10. Disabled Remember each folder's view settings

11. Enabled Restore previous folder windows at logon

12. Disabled Show drive letters Enabled Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in colour.

13. Enabled Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items.

14. Enabled Show preview handlers in preview pane Disabled Use check boxes to select items Disabled Use sharing wizard (Recommended) .

15. EnabledHKEY_CURRENT\USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5} on user logon.

16.   RDP client version is current and up to date on all client devices.

As I have stated none of these have worked.

Here is a video of the flickering:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/EvNp8jHLG2Z6Hsjh6

Quite frankly I am completely lost about this situation.  On normal services servers which maybe one or two people connect to the problem is not there.  With servers that have many connections it is there.  This also occurs regardless of the OS you are connecting from.

Many thanks in advance.

Chris

Flickering RDP Server 2016

For some time I have been investigating flickering both in our 2012 Terminal severs and now the same thing in our 2016 Terminal servers.  I know that flickering problems are well documented around various forums and help portals but every suggested fix has done nothing for our situation.  Here are the fixes so far that have not worked:

Group Policy:

Always show icons, never thumbnailsEnabled Always show menusEnabled Display file icon on thumbnails Enabled Display file size information in folder tips Enabled Display simple folder view in Navigation pane Enabled Display the full path in the titlebar (classic folders only) Disabled Hidden files and folders Do not show hidden files and folders Hide extensions for known file types Disabled Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) Enabled Launch folder windows in separate process Disabled Remember each folder's view settings Enabled Restore previous folder windows at logon Disabled Show drive letters Enabled Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color Enabled Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items Enabled Show preview handlers in preview pane Disabled Use check boxes to select items Disabled Use sharing wizard (Recommended) Enabled

HKEY_CURRENT\USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5} on user logon.

As I have stated none of these have worked.
