RDS 2012 R2: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the (name-of-service) service

Hi guys,

On a random base (daily, weekly) we're experiencing major log-in problems on our Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services farm. The VM's are hosted on Hyper-V 2008 hosts and we're not using Citrix techniques etc.

Users are reporting that they cannot log-in, the log-in sessions hangs with a blank screen when loading their user profile (e.g. Please Wait For The User Profile Service).

In the System event log of the server on which the user is logging on the following errors are shown:

Source:        Service Control Manager
Date:          23-12-2014 7:28:01
Event ID:      7011
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Description:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after 30 (or sometimes 60) seconds, the same error only another service (in random order):

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after exactly 30 seconds, the same error only another service:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UxmSms service.

etcetera, with the following errors:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AudioEndPointBuilder service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the WPDBusEnum service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service.

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrkWks service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

These errors are logged continuously.

An administrator cannot solve this since he isn't able to login in as well (console or remotely), only a hard reset of the VM is possible to use the affected server again.

I took different steps to solve this problem without any success, like:

- Installing the latest Windows updates
- Removed unnecessary printer drivers, print monitors and print processors (no local printers/drivers are installed, only Remote Desktop Easy Printer driver is used)
- Searched different forum posts, but found only hotfixes for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Can someone please help me with this annoying problem?

Many thanks!!

EDIT:
Of course is increasing the time-out not really an option here... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13765.event-id-7011-service-timeout.aspx

RDS 2016 RemoteApp not going correctly fullscreen

Hi all.

Im testing out RDS 2016, so far its been very nice and performance is great.

But im having a wierd issue when trying to run RemoteAPPs in maximized windows (fullscreen)

It sort of looks like the window is in a incorrect placement. The top and leftmost part of the window is sort of moved out 5-6 pixels when running fullscreen. The buttom part of the window is also below the processbar of the workstation im using.

On my client i am running 2560x1440 and im not sure if that is the issue, but it just seems strange.

Have anyone experienced anything similar, and do you have a solution for the issue?

RDS per-device CALs when connecting from another RDS server?

Hey I wonder if somebody can help me answer a bit of a conundrum!

We use a number of Windows based RDS jumpboxes to manage various parts of our network.  However we also use an RDS environment for our day-to-day business operations.  So to connect to a jumpbox we would log onto our PC, then connect the primary business RDS environment (which is where we can access files, Outlook etc.) which is fully licenced with per-user RDS CALs and then from there we RDS to one of the jumpboxes if we need to manage that part of the network.  These remote jumpboxes, for various reasons are not joined to the domain and are completely isolated from the business network (other than RDS over 3389) so we cannot use the one RD licence server for all of them.

For the first jumpbox we happened to have some old 2008 per-user RDS CALs so I used these, but we now need a couple more jumpboxes and I'm contemplating how to licence them.  Given that we will only connect to these jumpboxes from one of our two "business" RDS servers it would seem we only really need to installed two per-device RDS CALs?  Note that we could have multiple users connecting to these jumpboxes from the business RDS servers, rarely more than 3-4 at a time however.

Am I right do you think?

Thanks!

Windows server 2016 - Software Restriction Policies - Designated File Types

Hi

After applying a software restriction policy GPO, servermanagerlauncher.exe won't run.

This program is scheduled to run "At logon of any user" (rather Administrators) and it returns the popup error "This file does not have a program associated with it". ???

Any other executable runs fine, in particular ServerManager.exe runs well.

This GPO reset the list of "Designated File Type", in which EXE is present.

This GPO was set (a long time ago for W2008 RDS) to remove LNK (i.e. shortcuts) from the Designated Files Types. So any shortcut can be run from anywhere (i.e user's dekstop), while the real executables (Designated File types) are allowed only from specific locations (Basically C:Windows\ and c: \program files).

What's specific with servermanagerlauncher.exe ?

ADS & DNS Server with Hyper-V

Dear All

I have the following setup.

1. Host Server which is also ADS server and DNS Server. This is the physical server. WS2012R2 is the Base OS.

2. 4 x Hyper-V Guest Servers running WS2012R2 Std Edition configured  onto this server.

3. One of the Hyper-V Servers is a Terminal Client Server. We have about 50 Thin Clients connecting to this server. Another is the application Server.

4. The Thin Clients have Win7 OS embedded on them. The Thin Clients connect to TS server first and then they can access the application server.

Problem :

Sometimes when Thin Clients try to log in ; they get message TS-Server could not be located ; i.e. the TS-Server is not accessible. But when the Thin Client is rebooted

Some times the problem goes away after a few minutes. Without doing anything.

Sometimes we have to reboot the TS Server ( Virtual).

Sometimes we have to shutdown all servers and reboot the physical host server and restart everything all over again. But the problem comes up again in next 2-3 days.

We have installed all the windows updates and patches and we do it weekly for all servers.

Any suggestions ?

Windows server 2016 RDS - Printer driver installation

Double clicking on a print server queue, a regular user can trigger installation of a printer drivers through "point and print".

This shouldn't be allowed. Only administrators should have rights to write (or trigger writing) in C:\Windows\system32\spool\DRIVERS\

At least this was not allowed in W2008 R2 RDS.

RD Gateway Credential Delegation?

$

WS2012 RDSHs and WS2012 RD Gateway. Clients mostly Windows 10 Pro. All fully patched.

Users connect via webfeed-published RemoteApps.

Credential Delegation is set up and working on the LAN.

On WAN, when accessed from the same domain users on the same domain computers, with connections through RD Gateway, the RDG prompts for credentials. Users enter their domain credentials and connection proceeds. SSO is working; they're not prompted again as long as at least one RemoteApp is open.

In Deployment Properties, these options are set under Gateway, but I don't think this is where this would be set:

  • Server name: remote.domainname.com (resolves externally and internally to the RDG).
  • Logon method: Password Authentication
  • Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers: On
  • Bypass RD Gateway server for local computers: On

I enabled Credential Delegation on the RDG as a test, but was still prompted for credentials.

Is it possible to set up the RDG for credential delegation?

Remote Control of Remote Desktop Services Sessions

I do not find this option.
Configure Remote Control of Remote Desktop Services Sessions.

This link (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771538%28v=ws.11%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396) is about the process in Win server 2012. And here (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725700(v=ws.11).aspx) remotely control a user session.

Windows Server 2008 WEB will not allow KB3080079 to run and it is required to disable TLS 1.0 so RDP still works

Windows Server 2008 WEB will not allow KB3080079 to run and it is required to disable TLS 1.0.  Also please note that this is Windows Web Server 2008...on SP2

When I disable TLS 1.0 and enable TLS 1.2, it not only breaks RDP, but it also prevents access to my website (built on C#).

When I try to run KB3080079 I get a message that says update does not apply to your system. I also already tried KB3140245 with the same result...does not apply.

How am I supposed to meet PCI compliance if Microsoft's update to fix this will not run on my licensed and PAID FOR product?

Can someone from MS tech support please help here before I go out of business?

Thanks

Temporary profile & (.BAK) file in server 2008 R2

HI,

Response will be appreciated.

I have 150 users in my office. Sometimes they get temporary profile sometimes not. It happens with mostly all users. I have broker server installed with 4 VMs. sometimes if I try to log in to individual VM, I am still getting Temporary profile on it. When I checked registry files, then I saw some (.bak) file generated for some of the user profiles. I tried to rename it ( with different foormate like .ba ) or deleted it but issue is still the same. I am confused what is wrong with profile. Is the issue is due to Roaming profile  or i need to switch to local Profile.

Thanks.

Task you are trying to do cannot be completed because remote desktop services is currently busy

I have an odd issue connecting thin clients to a new 2012r2 RDS Farm.

I have ~200 Wyse thin clients using remote apps to a farm of 5 Term Servers..  Connections work fine, no issues with connectivity.

We are wanting to use a pure RDS environment, so we have provisioned a 2 server farm for testing.  All connectivity is internal.  Thin Clients are in Appliance Mode, so they power on, user logs in, Client starts RDP to server.

At first connection, the trust warning is provided.  If we check the box to not display the message again, this first connection is made, user logs in.  All is good.

When the user logs out, connection is cleared from the collection, and client powers down.

Next login, user logs into client, RDP session starts, message "Task you are trying to do can't be completed because remote desktop services is currently busy".  Note that there is only this test user connecting to servers.  It shows that user has logged into the collection.  At this point, we have to log the user out of the collection, and have them reboot the client.

Now at the above mentioned Trust warning, if we do NOT select the "do not ask..." box, and it displays the warning, we select continue, it makes the connections without issue.  So we only receive the message if we select the "Do not ask for future connections" button.

I am at a loss.  I am NOT a term server guy, and my consultant that has done our original setup here, and the new setup is stumped as well.

Any help appreciated!

James

Hello,

I have a terminal server at work and it uses from external but also from internal people.

I disabled clipboard by using this GPO :

Do not allow Clipboard redirection

For both access, users can't copy from their desktop to remote session.

I would like to know if its possible to allow it for internal access but not from outside.

Thanks for your help,

Terminal Server loads temp profiles

$

Hi Guys,

We are experiencing an issue with one of our terminal servers were if we have more than 60 connections they all load into temporary profiles. We have done the usual of removing the sid from the profilelist in regedit, Remove the user account folder and we have replaced the default profile many times. It just seems once we have that magic 60 number it refuses to let another load his profile. The server has loads of resources and it's not under any load.

I have a license of 75 per device cals installed so im within my limit. It also shows 4 temporary device cals are issued is this normal?

Its Server 2008 r2.

Sorry any profiles beyond the 60th connection loads into a temporary profile.

I also get these messages even though it says i have 15 licenses available.

The Remote Desktop license server "MSK-TERMSERV-04" does not have any remaining permanent licenses of the type "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : Per Device CAL (TS or RDS)". As a result, the Remote Desktop license server cannot issue licenses of the type "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : Per Device CAL (TS or RDS)" to the Remote Desktop Session Host or Remote Desktop Virtualization Host server "MSK-TERMSERV-04". To resolve this problem, verify that the Remote Desktop licensing mode configured on the RDSH or RDVH server matches the type of licenses installed on the Remote Desktop license server. If required, purchase and install additional licenses as needed for this Remote Desktop license server.

RDS - Session Virtualisation - How to open App in users own desktop

$

Hi Guys
I am hoping to get some clarification.
I am in the middle of deploying a RDS FARM (Session Virtualization) for a client.
I will be presenting a bunch of URL in the "Remote App" page once a user authenticates via the webaccess URL.

I understand when a user clicks on a URL from the Remote App page it fires up a RDP session for the user and hides the RDP window so the user gets a feel that they are using a Web app. But this means, the user is using the RDS Farm resources when they click on the URL.

Question

Is it possible to have a Citrix like experience, ie, when the user clicks on the URL from the Remote app page
rather than opening an IE browser window from the Session Host server the IE session opens from users own desktop?

Thanks in advance
J

Multiple RDS deployments same forest

$

The setup has:
-2x 2012R2 server with the session host role configured
-1x 2012R2 server with the gateway, webaccess and connection broker installed
-1x domain controller
-1x application server running a SQL database

A application is published on the RD Web Access server, the users are only using the remote app to connect.
-The web access URL: tenant.fabrikam.com
-The gateway URL: tenant.fabrikam.com

The plan is to setup a multitenant environment, the others customers need to access a different domain/URL, for example:  tenant.contoso.com

An option would be to add a second RD Web access website to the existing RD Web Access server, however the preferred way is to add a second RD Web Access server. But the problem is the RD Gateway is also installed on the same server and has the wildcard certificate.

For the reason above i think the best option is to deploy a new RDS infrastructure (Gateway, Web Access, Connection Broker and Session hosts) that uses the same AD domain and is able to use the same application server.

Is it possible to deploy multiple remote desktop services in the same forest?

Corrupt Windows 2012 RDS Basic Color Scheme

$

We have one Windows 2012 R2 server that has been functioning fine up to a couple of weeks ago.  After a reboot the screen colors went haywire.  It seems somehow the “Windows Basic” color scheme got corrupted. Black text becomes yellow text. White backgrounds become black backgrounds. The right-hand scroll bar becomes black with white outline. And in some cases white text will replace black text on a white background, rendering the window contents invisible.

Following a number of suggestions online I have been able to get this server back where users can use it.  What I have read online indicates that a reboot (due to MS Updates or whatever other reason) could cause this corruption again.

What I want to know - has MS come out with a permanent fix for this issue?  Just because the basic color scheme gets corrupted is no reason to have to reload a server (one suggestion I found online).  As I see things, this should be a situation like installing a new updated graphics driver to fix a resolution issue.

What about it MS?  Care to pipe in with your thoughts on this matter?

What does the community have to say?  I am hoping you tell me there is at least a hot fix for this.

Thanks
