Can I add a new server to test RemoteApp without disrupting the current remote desktop services?

$

My current Remote Desktop Services deployment consists of two servers. The first has the following installed roles:

  • RD Web Access
  • RD Connection Broker
  • RD Session Host (although it doesn't currently host any sessions)
  • RD Licensing

The second has only RD Session Host installed and hosting sessions is its purpose within the deployment.

I would like to configure and test RemoteApp with the intention of eliminating the second RD Session Host server from the deployment.

I have had limited experience configuring Remote Desktop Services and I want to be sure I do not disrupt existing services during my testing.  Can it be done?  What steps do I take to guarantee I don't cause disruption?

The current servers are running Windows Server 2012 Standard.  The server I intend to use as to test RemoteApp has Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Evaluation).

TCP Socket RST on the port TCP Port 3389

We are making the RDP Connection using TCP Tunneling on the port 3389 in C#.  But the TCP Socket is disconnecting in 50 seconds.

4145 213.992742000 source(my pc) destination (remote server) TPKT 71 Continuation
4146 213.998031000 source(my pc) destination (remote server) TPKT 981 [TCP Retransmission] Continuation
4167 219.778181000 source(my pc) destination (remote server) TPKT 85 Continuation
4191 224.575355000 source(my pc) destination (remote server) TPKT 1354 [TCP Retransmission] Continuation
4246 238.663506000 source(my pc) destination (remote server) TCP 54 49322 > ms-wbt-server [RST, ACK] Seq=173138 Ack=27613 Win=0 Len=0

In addition to that, I have gone through following the solutions provided. But it not worked for me.

RDP connections might fail due to a problem with KB2621440 – MS12-020:

Actually i have tried  this patch in the windows 7. But it already deployed in the machine.

Socket.Disconnect Method (Boolean):

We are not disconnecting socket through code Explicitly. But the socket connection to the end machine (on the port 3389) is disconnecting internally after couple seconds. We have monitor this one using the wireshark. Eventhough, we have send the Keepalive packet in every 10 seconds, but its disconnecting the Socket after the 50 seconds. Due to this we are not able to send the datapacket to the end machine socket which is received from the  Tunneling.

Please help me to resolve the issue.

I have the gone the RD Gateway manager and Remote desktop services. Since I am testing the feature the in the corporate the network, I don't how to setup the RD Gateway Manager in the Windows 7 Machine.

Please forgive me for grammatically mistakes

Thanks

Remote Desktop session disconnect

We have a number of thin clients and standard PC's that access a Windows 2012 R2 server using Remote Desktop.  Each of these sessions start a common program so that the client never sees a desktop on the server just the running program.  Our problem is that after a successful logon if the user walks away from the workstation and the connection sits idle for ten minutes (exactly ten minutes) the session disconnects and the user is required to ctrl-alt-delete to restart the session.  The application program is never affected it is still at the same spot when the user re-establishes a connection.

Black screen at Remote Desktop login to Server 2012 R2

We are running RDS on a Windows 2012 R2 server. RDP connections hang at a black screen every couple of days (approximately 7-10 days) and can only be resolved by rebooting the server (I have configured a scheduled task to do this every night as we have a lot of users connecting to the servers remotely).

This seems to be a known issue and pressing CTRL+ALT+END, Cancel seems to bring up the login screen again but is only a workaround. Does anyone know of a permanent fix?

RDP Closes Abruptly

I can access my remote PC via RDP outside the network once and everything works seamlessly. However, when I disconnect and try to reenter, RDP closes without connecting to the remote PC. When I restart the remote PC, I can log in once more then the issue repeats.

- I've tried connecting from multiple devices and get the same issue.

- I am prompted to enter the remote PCs credentials. But after I put them in, RDP loads for a few seconds and then closes.

I hope someone can help me, its becoming nearly impossible to log in remotely and I use that other machine to maintain a second business remotely.

When connecting to a locked (but not disconnected) session from same PC, RDP client does not ask for credentials and unlocks

Hello everyone!

Today, a customer asked me to fix a problem that they consider a high security risk, and I cannot seem to find a solution for them.

They have a Windows 2012 (first release) RDS farm (but have already confirmed same problem exists with Windows 2012 R2 RDS farm). Security is important to them, so they have disallowed saving passwords for their RDS sessions. When a user connects, he is asked for credentials. If they reconnect to a disconnected session, they also have to give their credentials. So far, so good.

However, recently users have discovered (you would think they have better things to do…), that you can reconnect to a connected session without credentials if reconnecting from the same client. The first RDP window will disconnect from the session as the second window connects.

So now consider this scenario:

  •  A user has logged in to RDS (using his credentials)
  •  The user goes to lunch and locks his screen with Ctrl - Alt – End. He does this because IT department has repeatedly asked him to do this. His session is locked but not disconnected.
  •  As soon as he is gone, his colleague walks over to his desk, and minimizes his locked session using the connection bar or Ctrl - Alt - Break. The session is minimized, but not disconnected.
  •  The user uses the same RDP file again to connect to RDS a second time. He is not asked for credentials.
  • The first RDP window disconnects as a second RDP window comes up.
  • The user finds the RDS sessionunlocked In the second RDP window, so he can use this method to unlock someone else's RDS session without credentials.

I have confirmed this problem exists with both type of clients they have: Windows 7 PC’s and Windows 10 PC’s.

The IT department has identified this as a major security problem in their company. I cannot find a way to force the Windows clients to ask for credentials in this situation. Also, I cannot find a way to prevent people from minimizing an RDS session. Ctrl - Alt - Break always works.

 Do you have any suggestions?

RemoteApp: problem with certificate

Hi,

I have an expired (self signed) certificate on my remoteapp.
Used this link to renew it: https://ryanmangansitblog.com/2013/03/10/configuring-rds-2012-certificates-and-sso/

And it seems fine, certificate is valid till end 2017. However I still get the error when I add my remoteapp-server into my "remoteapp and desktop connections" (W10 client, in order to have the remoteapps in my startmenu).

Already rebooted the server.

Screenshots to clarify:

Please advise.

RDS 2012 Remote App Active Window not coming to the front

We are working with RDS 2012 and publishing a remote App.  The App has many windows that open within it and a few windows into their session the active window stops coming to the front.  Since this window opens behind the old window the user thinks the app locks up.  If they click off to the side and then open the Remote App window back the windows does come to the front, but this cannot be a solution.

We have tried changing the HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ForegroundFlashCount to 3

and the HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ForegroundLockTimeout  to 0

Anybody else encountered this?

Unable to Remote into Server: Windows 2012 R2

We have a server on our network that we use primarily as a network share server. I've been able to remote into it for as long as I can remember, but this last week I tried to remote in and it gave me the generic "Can't connect for one of these reasons" pop ups.  I have not changed any settings or added new software, and have confirmed that it is set to allow remote connections via control panel.  Everything else is working the way it is supposed to, and I am able to remote into my PC through the server.

What could have changed to not allow me to get in?

Hi,

Simple question: what would be best practises to reboot a RDS 2012 server (in a 4 server farm with broker) on which lots of applications and users are. I guess a daily reboot would be best, right?

Please advise.

Dear Sir,

I was encountered the above issue. I was using Windows 7 client, access to Remote Windows 2012 R2 Essential Server application. After successfully logged in the server, the remote server screen did not display Ctrl+Alt+Del key. It mean did not protect the privacy.

It show the screen to the remote pulic worker.  The remote office worker can view what i am doing.

May I know what does it cause?

I'll appreciate for your kindly reply.

Thank you.

No input from redirected RemoteFX USB device (Symbol Barcode Scanner)

$

Hi,

We have set up redirection of a USB Symbol barcode scanner to a Remote Desktop and a RemoteApp using RemoteFx. Thus when connected to the remote desktop, the USB barcode scanner appears as a USB HID device and HID keyboard device in the Device Manager on the server and as a device in "Devices and Printers". Similarly the device appears as "redirected" in "Devices and Printers" on the client and it is no longer available as a device on the client.

However, when scanning a barcode with the device, not data (string/characters) appears on the server - for example when testing with Notepad.

Are we missing any vital permissions/grants/registry values, etc. on either the server-side or the client-side in order for the barcode readings to be passed on to the Remote Desktop?

It should be noted that when not using RemoteFx, the scanned barcodes are transferred to the server as any other standard keyboard input. However, then the device is not available as "device" on the server or excluded from use on the client.

Let Domain User Manage RemoteApp connection

$

Hello,

I have a client who needs to disconnect/log out domain users from the Server. We are using the RemoteApp on our Windows Server 2012 R2. This server is only meant for the RemoteApp. I need to give her permission to only let her manage the remote connection. I had searched the internet but i don't get my answer.

Any chance of doing it? Please let me know.

Thanks.

Temp Profile Over wireless Connection

I have majority of my users using laptops (Win 10) through wifi connection to logon to the server (2012 R2), most of them face issues with temp profile being used but when same user logon on a desktop computer they get their profiles and shared drives working.

What could be this reason and how can I resolve this.

Thank you

Remote Desktop Farm 2012 - network config

$

I'm looking for some help understanding the networking of an RD farm.

The farm has connection broker, session host, web access server and a gateway server. My understanding (right or wrong?) is that external clients connect via a browser to the WA server over 443. They open apps and the traffic goes back to the client via 443. What I do not understand is where the traffic is from. WA or GW?

I've heard different explanations:

  1. The traffic is proxied back through the WA. So Client -> WA -> GW -> WA -> Client (all over 443)

  2. The WA hands over to the GW. So Client -> WA -> GW -> Client.

The reason for this is so I can get the firewall configured. Do I need to get the FW opened (443) for only WA or both WA and GW?

RDP into Black Screen then Disconnects 2012 R2

$

I have several servers that the last few weeks all randomnly have started causing connections via RDP to go to black screen for about 10-15 seconds then close the session.

I have checked roll up updates such as KB2887595 are installed, I can console into them from my VM Console, however RDP does not let me in unless a full Reboot occurs, sometimes multiple times.  The fix may be temporary for a few hours, but may quickly revert back from not allowing new connections to log in.

These servers are part of a collection farm, I have disconnect sessions set to 1 minute, idle set to 15 min, active set to never for the connection properties for these farms.

I am at my wits end, cause I have roughly 6-8 servers all behaiving the same way with roughly 600 users hitting this set of servers on a daily basis, this is overflowing my help desk guys and I need a fix or solution...like last week.

Please help!
