RemoteApp & multiple collections

Hello everybody,

I'm having a small issue and i don't know if this is solvable in RDS. I'm assigned to setup a high-available RDS environment in server 2012. This environment will serve around 150 people and will contain several applications.

Now the problem i am having is the following, i have created several collections each containing several session hosts. Each collection hosts different applications. These are split up because of compatibility issues or for security purposes. However some users need to be able to access applications hosted on different collections at the same time. The applications are published to the clients using an RDS connection URL to the connection broker implemented in the control panel setting. All applications from the different collections are published in the start menu of the client.

This is were the problem starts. When a users as an active session to collection A and needs to starts an application on collection B, an error pops up saying that the program is not listed in the list of authorized programs. I assume this is because it wants to start up the application on the session host that is currently hosting the session.

Is this solvable that the connection broker opens a second session to another session host?

Thanks for looking into this matter!

Terminal Server Licensing doesn't assign user licence

Hi,

We've Windows Server 2008 R2 as Terminal Licensing Server, without Remote Desktop Session Host server on the network. Licensing server is member of domain and SRDLS configuration says everything green.
On Licensing Server I can see a lot of Added licences (column "Total licences") but for all of them there is 0 Issued, and a lot of clients are using RDS service. There is no any specific Terminal event logs.

How I can start troubleshooting this issue?

Potential ideas:
- how can I check if Terminal CALs are activated?
- how can I check if my clients are using that wanted Terminal License server?

Removing Remote Desktop Services Installation from Windows Server 2012

I am currently having trouble removing 'Remote Desktop Services' from my Windows Server 2012 datacentre server. When installed, I installed it through the option of Remote Desktop Services Installation. With this when I go to remove the role, it says it is already uninstalled, although I can access all the launchers for Remote Desktop Services, including the licencing section is installed as well.

So how would I remove Remote Desktop Services from my Server.

RDP not working properly

I have a Windows 2008 server. Once the Standard 2 RDP sesssion are in use, trying anohter RDP sessions returnes this error, "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator."

On the other 2008 servers when a third RDP session is attempted the message received is something to the effect of "Both RDP seesions are in use, which one would you like to disconnect?", showing the two connected sessions.

What needs to be done to the first server so that it responds like the others?

Connect to RDWeb through RD Gateway

Is there a way somehow to make RD Web accessible through RD Gateway? For instance, opening a browser and typing the hostname of the gateway server in the address bar, and getting connected to a RD Web Access page.

RDS Connection Broker HA – Could not create database (Master database offline)

$

I have the following servers in my RDS environment all Server 2012 with the following roles,

  1. RDS-Services01 (RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker, RD Gateway)
  2. RDS-Session01 (RD Session Host)

Our internal domain is DOMAIN.local and our external domain is a DOMAIN.co.uk because of this we want to use our already paid for SSL certificate for this new service. I have set the RD Gateway to use our external name DOMAIN.co.uk which works fine.

The problem is when connecting to our session server remotely we SSL error due to the Connection broker being RDS-Services01.DOMAIN.local. To get around this before I have created a High Availability RD Connection broker.

So have installed SQL 2012 Express on our RDS-Services01 server and also granted the server permission to create a database. DBcreator. When I run the HA wizard I get the following error,

The Remote Desktop Connection Broker server could not install the database named RDS by using the connection string:

DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER= RDS-SERVICES01\SQLEXPRESS;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;DATABASE=master.

The database name in the connection string is shown as [master] because in order to create a new database with admin specified name, a connection must be made to master database.

Error: Database is offline.

And also this error,

Database Creation - Failed: Could not create the database 'RDS'.

Cannot add -connect to the Network Printer via FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) - PrinterName + DomainName

Dear colleagues, I need yor help.

There is a print server in our organization - PrintServer on Windows Server 2003 in the domainDomain.Local. AD is on Windows Server 2003. Users connect to the Terminal Server on Windows Server 2012.

The problem is that some users can't add printer via FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name)

For example,

1) can add printer via SMB (share) name \\PrintServer\PrinterName

2) can add printer via IP of the server \\IP_of_PrintServer\PrinterName

3) BUT cannot add printer via FQDN (complete server name with domain) \\PrintServer.Domain.Local\PrinterName

Errors occur:

Cannot connect to printer. Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation failed with error 0x00000006

or

Connect to printer. Windows couldn't connect to the printer. Check the printer name and try again. If this is a network printer, make sure that the printer is turned on, and that the printer address is correct.

Printer is available (prints successfully).

If I ping -a PrintServer Iping actuallyPrintServer.Domain.Local [IP_of_PrintServer]. That means server is available via FQDN, and i can see the list of printer, but attempt to connect the device brings to ERROR.

What is strange:

First, problem appears for all Terminal Servers but NOT for all users. It happen selectively with different servers and different users from day to day. Can't discover some rule or regularity. But now at one TS for one user this problem appeared, and i can't resolve it. I tried to restart spooler, restart DNScache, ipconfig flushdns. Nothing helps.

Second, such error appears, if i try to add printer via wrong path, for example,\\WrongPrintServer\PrinterName

Third, there is no such a problem with local printers. At least, i don't know about this problem, because TS is a new project and not all bugs were collected.

Four, I have no such a problem on Windows XP local machines.

I think something wrong with user profile setting on this TSwithProblem, because the same user that have problem now on TSwithProblem, can add printers via FQDN on different TSWithoutProblem. Moreover, other users can add printer via FQDN on this TSwithProblem.

I will repeat, problem appears not only on TSwithProblem, but with other TS it happens too.

But I need to add printer exactly via FQDN (because AD use FQDN and users use AD to search and add printers).

Please, help me solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

WTS addin not loading on 32 bit, but works in 64 bit

I have written a terminal services plugin with virtual channels. The server and client code work fine on 64 bit Windows 7. The server side code runs on 32 bit Windows 7 too.

However I can't get a TS plugin to work on 32 bit windows. I launch MSTSC and the plugin does not get activated. The DLL is compiled for 32 bit, no missing dependencies.

I tried the most basic code for testing :

#define WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN
#include <windows.h>
#include <TsVirtualChannels.h>
#include <Cchannel.h>

#include "ts.h"

BOOL VCAPITYPE VirtualChannelEntry(PCHANNEL_ENTRY_POINTS pEntryPoints)
{
    OutputDebugStringA("VirtualChannelEntry called...\n");

    return TRUE;
}

I register this with :

reg ADD "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\Addins\TEST" /v Name /d %CD%\ts.dll /F

I double checked the registry, it has the right path, but the DLL does not load.

i ran the Procmon tool and monitored mstsc.exe - it reads the DLL file, and does a "Loadimage" operation, but the VirtualChannelEntry function is never called.

What is wrong??

Thanks in advance

Vivek

Redirected Printer Settings Greyed out and Missing Finisher & Trays

$

Hi,

I have added a new local printer . The printer has 2 additional trays and a finisher added.

When I log onto the terminal server (server 2008 R2), the printer is redirected, but without the extra 2 trays and finisher. Most options are greyed out within the properties of the printer driver.

Same as this issue here:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/2eeeb270-9cbb-4628-ad22-0ef3df6549d6/printers-not-redirecting-properties-and-preferences

The driver is installed on the server and I have tried disabling the 2 GPO settings 'Use Terminal Services Easy Print printer driver first' and 'Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first'.

Does anyone know a solution to this??

Access to drives in RDC session

I have no problem creating a RDC session originating from my laptop (local) to my desktop 600 miles away (remote) (both Win 7 64-bit). Drive access is enabled and all the laptop (local) drives are visible in Windows Explorer on the remote computer.

However, I want the reverse too. I want the desktop (remote) drives to show up in Windows Explorer on the laptop (local) computer ... but they don't. How can I get the remote drives to show up on the local laptop?

Thanks.

dllhost.exe COM surrogate high cpu

$

Hi forum,

We have terminal server running Win 2008 R2, and recently i have seen spikes in CPU usage. For example a user could be using 50% of the cpu.

When I took a closer look at the process causing high cpu it as listed as dllhost.exe COM Surrogate.

From my understanding this process is used to extract thumbnails when a user chose to preview the picture. This process also has been listed when using faulty codecs.

No my question is is there a patch or another way to tackle this issue. it is really annoying to be terminating process everyday.

I even tried to use a script that would do that job for me but I do no think it is the solutions.

Any advice, tips would help

Thank you

Windows Server 2008 Remote Desktop lag issue

$

Hello,

I have Widows Server 2008 R2 with all the latest updates installed and running inside ESXI 5.1 I am having some serious issues with lag when I remote desktop into this station. It seems as if screen is not refreshing fast enough. I am experiencing this issue both on LAN and WAN. This morning it was so slow my screen literally froze. After I have restarted this box, it started to work fine again. I noticed that I have to restart it every 2 days in order to fix this issue. I know there are a lot of threads with the similar issue but nothing seems to help here. I see no errors or events that can pertain to this problem on both Windows and ESXI sides. My CPU and Memory are running very low so doubt that's the issue. IPv6 has been disabled on Windows station.

windows 2012 rdp login credentials are not used on Remoteapp connect dialog box

$

2012 servers are all patched to current levels. Most of the rds services are on one vm. The rdsh server is a separate vm. We have successfully run remoteapps. I am trying to nail down multi-user issues on a desktop.

Using a windows 8 desktop logged in as a@domain.net user. On this desktop I open IE10 browser to rdwa.domain.net/rdweb and login in as b@domain.net user. I complete a remoteapp, the remoteapp is closed,  the rdweb page is logged out and closed, and the"Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\RemoteApp and Desktop Connections" is used to disconnect all connections.

Now when I log in to the rdweb page as c@domain.net user and select a remoteapp, the Remoteapp dialog box opens, I click "Show Details" and it shows that it will use the b@domain.net credentials from the previous session.

Where have I asked for this behaviour? I did ask the browser to save passwords but surely not for this purpose.

Gerald.

Windows Server 2012 RDS Sessions don't logoff after being disconnected when using protocol other than RDP

$

Using Citrix XenDesktop 7 App Edition to launch seamless applications on a Windows 2012 Server. When sessions are disconnected, they do not log off after the specified period of time in the GPO --> Session Time Limits.

I am assuming this is because it's using the ICA protocal instead of RDP because RDP sessions die after 1 minute (what it was configured to do).

Is there a registry setting somewhere that can alter this for ICA as well as RDP? In the past this was altered by going to the Session Host Configuration Dialog box in Windows Server 2008 R2, but that dialog does not exist in Windows Server 2012...

Thanks in advance!
