Printing Chaos!

Hi,

I'm having serious headaches with deploying printers to my users and I'm after some advice please..

I have two 2012R2 RDS servers deployed in a farm configuration.

I have two printers that all users need a connection to. I've previously deployed them via GPO using the (old fashioned?) Deployed Printers mechanism.

Recently, I moved the two printers from one host to another. I deleted the printers from the Deployed Printers GPO setting, and then added the printers again (this time on the relocated host). Initially, it seemed to have worked OK. However, ever since, I've been getting hammered by users saying they can't print/can't set printer as Default/several versions of same printer etc etc.... I've noticed myself, the shared printers from the original deployment seem to re-appear - even though, the host is no longer physically sharing said printers...

So my question is, how best to proceed? Do I need to create GPP to remove all the printers and start again?

The only requirement I have is that all users can see both printers, and they can set whichever they wish to be default. The default setting should persist throughout logoff/logons.

Many Thanks!

RDP Issues

I am running Windows 10 PRO.

I set up RDP on my host computer.

I downloaded the RDP app and installed it on my ASUS T300FT tablet

If the host and remote tablet are on the same network all works as expected.

If I move the tablet to a different network it cannot find the host computer.

Both the host computer and tablet are connected to the internet.

After failing to connect, I added the Port to the host IP address and it still failed.

I thought that maybe I have a blocked port but I am using Norton Security 2016 and it works on the same Network but not when both items are on different networks.

Thanks for any help given.

VDI Windows 7 x64 not enforcing timeout on disconnected sessions

I have a Windows 7 x64 VDI collection that doesn't end a disconnected session after X amount of time. On the same RDS deployment, I have 2 other collections (Windows 7 x86) and the timeout settings apply without any problems. Both CAP and RAP are ok at the RD Gateway level. It appears this issue is only x64 related. Anyone else encountered this? All RDS server are running Windows 2012 R2 (Web Access, Gateway, Brokers, License, RDSH, RDVH)

Internet Explorer on 2012 R2

Hi all,

I have set up a 2012 R2 server with RDS.  Recently, when we try and browse portal.office.com (or any other Office 365 site) using Internet explorer 11, we get a blank page.  It works fine with Chrome no problem.

Here is what I have tried up to now:

  • Uninstall IE 11
  • Reset all Internet Explorer Settings
  • Add all Office 365 related websites as Trusted sites (also tried as intranet site)

I am at a loss and do not know what can be causing this.

Any clues?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Hi

We have old Win 2008 SP2 Terminal server licensing server. Is it possible to migrate licenses from there to 2012R2 licensing server and how to do that?

Terminal Server license

I had 20 terminal server license and I bought an additional 50 but my users still only have access to 20 terminal server licenses... I have added the new license to the terminal server and the license manager say I have 70 available. Any ideas on how I can get access to the other 50 would be greatly appreciated...

RDS 2012R2 - HA (RDSH) testing

$

Just thought I'd document a few more observations during HA testing of the Hosts....

Picture the scene;   2 x RDSH servers in a single collection publishing applications.  Collection is configured for HA.   Lets call them RDSH-01 and RDSH-02 (imaginative I know!).

Client fires up application and this time the Collection Broker selects RDSH-01.  Connection is apparent in RDS Server Manager > Connections.

Now pull the NIC/Disable NIC on RDSH-01

  • At immediate application launch, new users or those with active or disconnected sessions may attempt to connect to the 'off-line' server (active/disconnected to the previous session directed by the Collection Broker) but this will fail as a connection cannot be established.  Two error messages appear at app launch, firstly 'Remote Desktop cannot connect to the remote computer.....' followed by 'There are no available computers in the pool....' This second message is presented for users attempting connection after around 5 minutes.
  • Approximately 10 minutes later RDS appears to have acknowledged RDSH-01 is 'off-line' and at application launch, new or previously disconnected/active users are correctly assigned to RDSH-02.

Lessons learned:

RDS 2012R2 takes around 10 minutes to identify a failed RDSH and to inform the CB.

Questions

1.  Am I correct in thinking there's an RDSH heartbeat of some description using a 10 minute time frame?

2.  Is there documentation providing a detailed explanation of the RDS HA implementation?

Thanks

Lea

Users Seeing Other User's Printers

We currently run an RD farm with 5 RD hosts.  Users are distributed to the hosts based on load balancing.

When someone logs into any of the 5 servers, they can not only see the printers they've mapped, but printers other users (on the same host) have mapped.  It will even show duplicates.

For instance:

User A logs in and maps Printer 1

User B logs in and maps Printer 2

-At this point both User A and B can see both Printers 1 and 2.

User C logs in and maps Printer 1

-All 3 users now see 2 copies of Printer 1, and Printer 2.

Is there any way to hide other users printers, so each user ONLY sees the printers they themselves have mapped?

Thank you,

Nickolas

Bootable USB/DVD client with 2012R2 RDS Gateway

Server 2012R2 RDS Farm using an RDS Gateway.

I'd like to find a way to build a bootable USB/DVD image that'll automatically connect to our RDS Gateway. I'd like it to boot into whatever the OS is then automatically start an RDP session to our server via the RDS Gateway.

I've found a lot of different bootable Linux etc distros but none of them seem to have the ability to connect to an RDS Gateway (straight RDS is what a lot of them offer).

Can anyone advise me on how they would go about building such an image please?

Thanks.

Remote Desktop Services are currently busy (blank username sessions)

We have two 2008 R2 servers that have started randomly throwing up the "Remote Desktop Services are currently busy" error every 2-3 days and users are unable to connect.  When you run a "query session" from CMD prompt you see lots of disconnected sessions with a blank usernames. Only way to fix the situation is to reboot the server.

I have already installed the following hotfixes but it has not helped.

KB2661332

KB3014783

The current client to host (RDP to RDP) setup is that our client is using a Server 2012 R2 terminal server in house and connects to our Server 2008 R2 terminal server.   It may be of note that it didn't start happening till the client upgraded their RDP server to Server2012 R2.

Any ideas as to how to stop this from happening?

Problems with RD Gateway / RD Web Configuration and Two-Factor Authentication

Hi All,

Not to long ago we decided to upgrade our older 2008 R2 Terminal services to 2012 R2 remote apps. Originally we had planned on having one machine with the RD Web and RD Broker roles installed and then two Session host machines. Something else different about this setup than our previous is we wanted to use two-factor authentication.

We setup two-factor authentication on the RD Web server and it works fine. The problem is once a user has downloaded an RDP file, they can run it and get around our two-factor authentication and just have username/password authentication.

After some reading I found that a way to fix this was to add the RD Gateway role to our RD Broker / RD Web server to force the connections to go through it and then block 3389 to the session hosts from anyway besides the RD Gateway / RD Broker / RD Web server.

One thing I have noticed that is quite odd, in the settings for the RD Gateway, if I have the "Bypass RD Gateway for local addresses" checked, everything seems to work (as long as I am not blocking 3389 to the sessions hosts from anywhere but the gateway, which is something I should be able to do if the gateway was working correctly) but I still have the same problem of the rd app files being usable to get around the two-factor. Then, when I have the same thing unchecked, I seem to be unable to run the apps. This leaves me to believe I have the RD Gateway configured incorrectly?

I have a valid certificate from a known issuer configured on the server. The vendor we are using for two-factor is Duo Security.

Any input / thoughts are appreciated. If there is a way to get RD Web to work on it's own and have the rdp file's only be usable once or something I would also be okay with that solution.

Thanks,

RDS LICENSE FAILURE

When attempting to install RDS user cals, retail version we get the following error in the Install Licenses Wizard of Windows Server 2012 R2 RD Licensing Manager: "Error, unable to validate the following codes:". This is a new Lenovo server and the RDS licenses were purchased from Lenovo. There are 2 of the 5 user licenses for a total of 10 users. These are the retail versions. We get the same result on either of the license codes. We are currently in the grace period but need to get the terminal server licensed as soon as possible.

Server 2012, RemoteFX, Devon IT Thin Clients

We have Server 2012 set up with a 1GB HD5450 GPU and connect to the Remote Desktop Server from the Devon thin clients. If users are watching YouTube, or similar small/compressed video streams everything works well - we have the GPU visible in Hyper-V. If a user tries to watch a video recorded on an iPad, or with a video camera, the video and sound become very choppy and often hangs. Can you tell me where the bottle neck in the system is likely to be - would it be the video card we have installed and would more memory on a better card help? Is there any guidance on GPU memory requirements for streaming video within desktop services ; specifically any guidance on video screen size vs memory - we are not using VDI - just the old fashioned traditional Terminal Services model.

the role of SCVMM2012R2 in deploying VDI

Hello

i am not sure about the role of SCVMM 2012 in VDI (dekstop virtualization).

i have read many articles about VDI, but in non of them i have seen anything about SCVMM.

SCVMM is always discussed in "private cloud" articles.

so does SCVMM has a role in deploying VDI?

let me clarify my scenario, in my organization, we want to purchase thin clients for our users and we will deploy about 200 virtual machines on our hyper-v Host servers. here do we need SCVMM 2012 R2 ?

note that i don't want to create a private cloud which is complicated process.

in fact i need to know, about deploying VDI, whether we can use SCVMM only to bulk create VMs and for managing those VMs with more capabilities ?

thanks in advanced

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

Printing sorted over remote desktop / terminal server

Hello.

We have a customer that uses a terminal server (windows server 2012 R2).
Office users connect thru remote desktop for normal use.
Most printers are installed on the serverside and no issue's there.

The reception however has a local printer (HP 2055d) over USB.
So she uses this one for some documents that are for her eyes only.
Computer OS is windows 7 pro 64bit.

Problem that happens is when she wants to printed sorted. So a contract that has to be printed 2 times. She wants page 1,2,3 and then page 1,2,3. if she does it local with a pdf or notepad it works. If she does it from the remote desktop session it's not sorting. It's printing, but not sorting, so page 1,1,2,2,3,3. I thought it was the printer but at my office with a different (hp) server that is connected over the network (IP) it also isn't working when connected to the terminal server.

When connected to a different server (the file server / dc) it IS working as expected.

I have installed latest HP Universal Printer Driver on the local client, and @ the terminal server.

What could be the reason sorted printing is not working?

Troubleshooting RDS solution

Hi

We have a RDS 2012 R2 solution in place.

it is highly available, with dual Gateways in the DMZ, dual Session hosts, dual connection brokers.

we use MFA.

when a user connects into the system via any device, we are authenticated via MFA, but then the login hangs at the initialising connection.

is there any RDS tools / step by step guides for troubleshooting RDS and its connection steps?

Thanks
