Does remote desktop web access require registered domain name? Server Windows 2008 residential from dynamic IP connection?

$

I will put the question just as it was put to me.

"trying to see if remote desktop web access requires a registered domain name

my dad moved his server windows 2008 from his office to his house

he is now on a residential (dynamic IP) connection"

Like I said, pressed for time on this, just need pointer.  I honestly don't know that much about it, this is the first place I thought to come.

Thanks for the help.

Shadowing to different port

Hi,

I have an issue with shadowing, in that it doesnt work. Our IT provider insist on changing the RDP listening port to non default, eg 2888, so in order to RDP to a server I have to use 10.10.10.10:2888 in the mstsc gui, for command line this works fine too and I have setup RDS correctly to use this for the clients.

However when it comes to shadowing, it doesnt seem to work. I assume that the default shadow command just tries to connect to 3389

for example "mstsc /shadow:4 /control /V:10.10.10.10"

This brings up the accept dialogue for the user, but when they accept, nothing happens.

If I use "mstsc /V:10.10.10.10:2888" I can RDP to the server without any problem.

However if I use "mstsc /shadow:4 /control /V:10.10.10.10:2888" to shadow a user, it doesnt work and says invalid server name

what am i doing wrong?

Thanks

2012 RDS farm - 1 CB and 2 RDSH - General question to understand the difference between 2008 RDS and 2012 RDS

$

All,

I am trying to get a new 2012 RDS farm up and running.  The setup I am going for is a 3 server setup with 1 Connection Broker and 2 RDSH servers.

My question is does the 2012 CB behave the same way the 2008 Dedicated Redirector did?  Meaning should the farm point (DNS) to the 2012 Connection Broker and does it forward the connection request to the RDSH servers?

Thank you for your help and time, Robert Jaudon

HA Remote desktop Connections Brokers

Hi Microsoft.

I am looking for advantages and arguments to implement more than 2 RDCB in HA.

My costumer i asking if more than 2 RDCB will allow the solution access for more users.

I cant seem to any documentation on adding more RDCB in an Enterprise environment, and the benefits.

Are there anyone out there with enterprise knowledge that can assist with experience?

Temp Profiles in RDS 2012 R2 Farm with High Available Brokers

Hello Community!

I'm designing a new 2012 R2 RDS infrastructure for a customer.

The goal is to have a full high available system.

Actually, we have 4 virtual servers with RDHS and RDCB roles on each. We created a Session Collection. No problems.

The only problem we get is with RDC 7.0 on XP clients (v 6.1.7600). I know : there is no support on Windows XP since July, 14h 2014 but my customer got 2/3 of his clients on Windows XP.

When connecting to the Farm (identified by a DNS RR), the XP client is redirected to the least used server and get a temp profile.
When connecting to the Farm throught the DNS name of one of the servers : no problems.

I read multiple articles discuting about DNS RR or NLB, but I never found an simple explanation : is it possible to connect XP clients into the farm through th DNS Farm name (DNS RR) in order to get a full High Available system?

Thanks by advance for your help

Slow outlook 2013 using large office 365 mailbox in terminal server environment - Windows search edb file size

$

Hi all, we have this issue on multiple servers:

Customers with their own local terminal servers (15 users, RDP to a server sessio) that have office 365 mailboxes are having issues with the windows search EDB file where it becomes HUGE (80+gbs).

Reason for this is because all these users have large ost files in which they share the same shared mailboxes (site specific for example) and there goes something wrong with the windows search index database file.

Temporarly we solve this by deleting and rebuilding the search index but in mere weeks the database edb file itself is back consuming a lot of space.

We CAN NOT AFFORD to work in ONLINE mode of outlook: the whole experience for end user is horrible. the outlook clients just react real slow because you're constantly working in mailboxes of sizes larger than 20gbs combined. So we managed to cache it for one month.

is there any permanent fix to tihs, how can we make our outlook mailboxes work fine on this terminal server without caching? the experience is horrible if we don't cache.

edit: we tried a lot of stuff, archiving, hardware accelerations, ...

Server 2008R2 RDG Intermittant Connectivity Issues

$

Problem:
I can sometimes connect using my 2008R2 RDG (Remote Desktop Gateway), and sometimes not.  When I can connect, the connection is typically stable and performs as expected and will be so for hours at a time given that the connection is used (avoiding inactivity timeouts, etc.)  When I cannot connect, my only recourse is to keep trying, wait a few hours maybe, try again, try the other gateway, and eventually it'll work again.  Both gateways were setup the same, and they both behave the same.

When I look on the logs of the RDG servers (Event Logs > App/Svc Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Terminal Services-xxx) I see many "Info" logs that only indicate clients connecting and disconnecting.... in many cases the clients disconnect after 0 seconds; no errors/warnings.

When I look at the client logs (I've tried RD Conn Mgr v2.7 and mstsc.exe v6.3.9600) I see several entries similar to:
RDPClient_TCP: An error was encountered when transitioning from TcpStateConnectingTransport to TcpStateDisconnected in response to 2 (error code 0x80004004).  I'm identifying the RDG by IP address from the clients (certs are issued to the IP address).

I can ping RDGs no problem, and accessing https://<rdg_IPaddress>/ works just fine with no security warnings at all times.

When already connected to a client, a new connection attempt will sometimes trigger the functioning sessions to freeze, and I can no longer connect/re-connect to any internal clients.

Setup:
I have 2 2008R2 RDGs (Remote Desktop Session Host, License Server, Gateway roles/features installed) that are NOT farmed together (unique IPs/hostnames), but are part of a small local DMZ domain.  These are using self-signed certs that have been installed on the relevant remote clients.  They are used to connect to many different 2008R2 nodes on an 'internal' network.

Firewall is forwarding TCP 80, 443 for remote RDG sessions, and 3389 for the internal RDP nodes.

Some clients experience this more than others.  It's not consistent between clients... one client may be functioning properly, and another may be unable to connect.  Typically one RDG will be working, and the other not, however sometimes they both work.

Help!!!  Any other logs to look at?

Certficate warnings

Hi,

I've had some certificate warnings in the past and thought it was a good idea to fix it by assigning my public wildcard certificate to my internal RDSH servers.
as it turned out in this topic https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6a70ed2e-46af-4891-92ff-c8bab6ec94a3/customrdpproperty-use-redirection-server-name?forum=winserverTS it wasn't that good idea.

So that was rolled back.

But now the certificate warnings are back.
'This certificate is not from a trusted authority'

When I take a look at the certificate that is linked to the RDP-TCP listener it was issued to server1.domain.local and issued by server1.domain.local.
We have an internal CA, but that is currently not set up to provide certificates automatically.

To get rid of these warnings I need to request a certificate from the CA and again change the certificate linked to the RDP-TCP listener. (http://www.vkernel.ro/blog/replace-the-default-self-signed-certificate-on-a-rd-session-host-server)

Or is there a better way?

RDP Issues

I am running Windows 10 PRO.

I set up RDP on my host computer.

I downloaded the RDP app and installed it on my ASUS T300FT tablet

If the host and remote tablet are on the same network all works as expected.

If I move the tablet to a different network it cannot find the host computer.

Both the host computer and tablet are connected to the internet.

After failing to connect, I added the Port to the host IP address and it still failed.

I thought that maybe I have a blocked port but I am using Norton Security 2016 and it works on the same Network but not when both items are on different networks.

Thanks for any help given.

Windows Search EDB file very large on Server 2012 R2 RDS

$

Hello experts.

We have hundreds of users on 2012 R2 RDS session host servers and have a non-stop problem with the Windows Search .edb file growing extremely large and filling up all disk space.

This looks to be a major problem for IT departments everywhere, based on a few seconds of searching around.

The main items we have in place to try and combat this problem:

1.) We have enabled the "DisableSearchBackoff" and added the Corecount registry key found in this post:

http://www.cyberdrain.com/?p=116

2.) We have a batch file that runs the commands found below on a nightly basis, which defragments the search index database.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2838018

3.) We have moved the index from C volume to dedicated drives.

The problem is, no matter how much space we add, the files just keep growing. Is the only resolution to add a massive volume to each session host for this file to grow as large as it wants? I have seen many threads on various forums where people have reached out to Microsoft support on multiple occasions for this issue and the work around is to rebuild or defrag the database. I know there are lots of these threads out there but I'm curious if anyone has found a solution yet. Thanks in advance.

How to log off a user after closing an application on a terminal server through Powershell?

We have a few users that only uses one application.
In group policy I changed the shell to a powershell script and it starts the application perfectly.
But when I close the appliation nothing happens (of course).

Does anybody know how I can do this?
Perhaps provide a working script?

Thanks in advance!

Server 2012 - The program did not start on the remote computer for Non Domain Admins

$

I have deployed a RemoteApp from Server 2012. If run the RemoteApp as a user who is a member of the Domain Admins group it works correctly. If I run the RemoteApp as a user who is not a member of the Domain Admins group I get a message stating "The program did not start on the remote computer. For assistance, contact your system administrator."

If I log onto the Terminal Server and receive a full desktop, the application runs for for all users. There appears to be some difference on how security is handled through RemoteApp versus receiving a full desktop. I have searched over 30+ articles now and all seem to say the error occurs when the application is reliant on a shared or mapped drive which has not yet mapped. This application does not rely on a mapped drive. Thank you in advance for your help.

Printing sorted over remote desktop / terminal server

$

Hello.

We have a customer that uses a terminal server (windows server 2012 R2).
Office users connect thru remote desktop for normal use.
Most printers are installed on the serverside and no issue's there.

The reception however has a local printer (HP 2055d) over USB.
So she uses this one for some documents that are for her eyes only.
Computer OS is windows 7 pro 64bit.

Problem that happens is when she wants to printed sorted. So a contract that has to be printed 2 times. She wants page 1,2,3 and then page 1,2,3. if she does it local with a pdf or notepad it works. If she does it from the remote desktop session it's not sorting. It's printing, but not sorting, so page 1,1,2,2,3,3. I thought it was the printer but at my office with a different (hp) server that is connected over the network (IP) it also isn't working when connected to the terminal server.

When connected to a different server (the file server / dc) it IS working as expected.

I have installed latest HP Universal Printer Driver on the local client, and @ the terminal server.

What could be the reason sorted printing is not working?

Failure of Installation for Remote Desktop Licensing

Licenses are not available for this Remote Desktop Session Host server. Try to install Remote Desktop Licensing, but it was failed.

I also try to fix windows update errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool as below, there are no errors found.

What else I should try in order to install remote desktop licensing role.

Save As dialog box does not show file list

$
0
0

Terminal Server 2012 R2.  'Save As' dialog box for one user does not show the file list.  The address bar shows the path, and there is a form box for the file name, and the user can save the file successfully.  But the space that should show the files in the chosen directory is blank.  There is no form box for the file list, it is simply the dialog box gray space -- which is to say, it's not that it looks like an empty folder, there is simply no form box displayed.

The 'Open' dialog box looks normal, showing the file list in the chosen folder.

I had the user log off of the Terminal Server and access it from a different PC, though I didn't expect that to make a difference, and it didn't.  I also logged on myself, and did not experience the same issue.  So it appears to be user-specific.

Is this a setting the user accidentally selected, or an error of some sort?

Thanks for any help.
