RDS 2012 (An Authentication error has occurred 0x607) - WINDOWS 8 ONLY

Hi - please help. I've read many posts relating to this error, but none have fixed my issue.

We have an RDS 2012 setup.  2 Servers.  Both session hosts.  only 1 is the broker.  Cert from official CA.

My authentication is set to ONLY allow devices with Network Level Authority.  I don't want to remove this.

Windows XP and Windows 7 can connect both internally, and externally via the RDWeb address perfectly fine, but all Win8 machines get the error "An authentication error has occurred. Code 0x607.

Can anyone please advise why?

Many thanks

I have a RDS 2012 R2 environment with three Active Connection Brokers configured. I am looking to determine which Broker is currently set as active through a SQL query to the RDCB database. Is anyone aware of how to do this?

I have looked into the tables and cant see an obvious way of determining this

Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services) - Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable error

Hi,

After doing lot of research and reading lot of discussions, still i am not able to fix this issue.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/0e340938-309c-415f-997c-5ca3d3051160/rdweb-getting-remote-desktop-gateway-server-is-temporarily-unavailable-error?forum=winserverTS

-Environment:Windows Server 2012 R2 (Remote Desktop Gateway, Session Server, Rdweb, Rd Licensing, Connection Borker, NPS -all in one).

-wild card SSL certificate with gateway SAN on it from Go-daddy.

-External RdWeb is accessible as internal Rdweb, internal rdweb is working for all remote apps but external Rdweb gives "Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable" error.

-Tried to use MSTSC internally to remote into local  server through Remote Gateway Server, but same error.

- I am using port 8443 for RDweb (is that the problem?); I already mentioned 8443 port under Gateway Server Properties\Transport Settings\ IP : local Server & HTTPS Port: 8443

-NPS policies are configured by default.

-Gateway is already mentioned under rdweb/pages/application settings

-Default Website is only configured for one port that is 8443

-CAP & RAP are configured for domain users access. "manage local computer groups" has alreadyassigned to RAP with preferred group.

Can anybody please help: this error is a problem for most of the people who are configuring RDweb first time.

*************update**********

I got it working internally through Remote gateway server with rdp and rdweb, but externally still having the problem...

Metro RDP Does not support back/forward mouse

It looks like the metro8 version of remote desktop does not support back/forward mouse buttons. Regular RDP does, but for whatever reason the metro version does not. I like the metro version better, but it's missing features. You also can't do drive sharing?

RemoteApp sends WM_LBUTTONUP incorrectly

This issue has been documented by several developers, but I haven't seen any responses from Microsoft. Wanted to bring it up again on this forum to see if anyone has gotten any further on this issue.

The issue is that RemoteApp client is sending WM_LBUTTONUP messages even when the user has not released the mouse button. Below are several other posts regarding the issue. In my testing, the problem only seems to occur when running Windows Remote Desktop Connections from Windows 7 and 8. Windows 10 client does not cause the issue. Oddly neither does the Microsoft's own Remote Desktop Client for the Mac!

Remoteapp security issue

$

Win 2012 R2 remote desktop services; we would like to deploy remoteapp with security in mind.

I published a couple of remoteapp, including Excel. I gave permissions and all stuff to restrict users following "least privilege" vision.

Opened Excel from Win7 client. Turns out that when saving a file from excel, if I write "cmd" into the name file textbox, command line opens. The same if I write "Control Panel" or notepad or .. whatever I want.

I wonder what's the purpose of publishing remoteapp and fine tuning permissions when you can use every application installed on  session host.

Also, there isn't a way to hide local disks, network discovery pc, deny logon to remote desktop on session host.... and so on.

How can I manage all of the above with a bit of security in mind ? I understand that I will have to "fix" these issues with a combined set of tricks (logoff.exe as custom shell, hiding disks with registry, probably applocker integration ... ) .. but what if I (and I will of course) forget something ?

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Sound in Remote Desktop Session stops working

$

Hello,

I have a sound issue with a 2008 server (32 bit). I'm monitoring the server via an RDP-Session that's up and running 24/7. Sometimes, the audio-output on the Client PC (Win 7 pro, 32 bits too) fells silent. Sound on the ClientPC itself (outside the RDP-Session) is fine, within the Session everything seems to be okay (volume control, Microsoft RDP Audio Device), just there is no sound. If I close the Session and reconnect, sound is back - sometimes for a day, sometimes for a week... Audio in the Console-Session or in other RDP-Sessions at the same time is flawless.

The WAN-Link between the two sites is a bit shabby, but as long as the session itself doesn't break I don't see a reason why a few beeps shouldn't come through.

After searching for a solution for a while now I have found hundreds of threads and solutions for no sound in RDP-Sessions at all, even a MS-Hotfix for shabby sound - but obviously I'm the only guy with such a problem.

Ideas anyone?

Thanks.

Unable to disconnect session 0

Hello,

In our company environment we have RDS farm server based on Win 2012. Everything works fine, but time to time we are not able to log off disconnected users from remote session. Error message appearing when we try to do this.

I also have tried to log off user via powershell "Invoke-RDUserLogoff" but it still with no success.

Only server restart helps to solve this.

Maybe it some other solutions exist for this problem. Also it will be good to know the reason of this problem.

Thank you.

Session setting "When a session limit is reached or broken: End the session" does not function since Server 2003

$

We have been getting off of Server 2003 and have upgraded some terminal servers to 2008 (R1) as well as 2012 R2 and both no longer function the same as 2003 with this setting. With 2003, it did exactly as one would expect. When a session was disconnected, the session was immediately ended. With 2008 (R1) or 2012 R2 terminal servers, this setting seems to do nothing at all. Even if I connect to a session locally using the 2012 R2 server's MSTSC.exe and disconnect, the session continues to be in a disconnected state. Now, the "End a disconnected session:" after a certain amount of time works like it used to, but I need to immediately end the session so that running applications end and restart when the user connects back. This is in a factory environment where a thin client runs a single application. When support personnel need to troubleshoot the application, a common technique has been to restart the thin client which also restarts the application. Now, the application no longer restarts and the support team now has to take additional steps to end the session. This is also problematic for applications with serial port redirection because whenever the thin client loses connectivity to its session, say for power interruption during planned downtime maintenance, the application pegs a CPU of the terminal server as soon as the session is disconnected. The only way to get out of this condition is to end the session or restart the application. This wouldn't be an issue if the session ended immediately after disconnection like the option is set to do.

Why can I not make this option function like it used to? Is there some additional configuration step I need to perform on these operating systems? Or is it just broke?

Remove User Profile Disks from a Botched RDS Install

$

I and my company inherited a Windows Server 2012 (not R2) Datacenter server at a new client that has User Profile Disks enabled.  The UPD is a problem because the local disk that results from the mounted VHDX file cannot be snapshotted with VSS. The VSS failure causes our disk image backup software (Replibit) to fail whenever a user is logged on when a backup job starts.

More background:

This server is not part of an RDS cluster, is not actually used as an RDS server in any way, and has an incomplete and botched RDS install on it.  To make matters worse, the server is a domain controller, a DNS server, is a Hyper-V host server, file/print server, and hosts the company's QuickBooks databases.  In short, it has almost everything in the kitchen sink on it except SQL Server.

What I want to do is disable User Profile Disks.  I've searched long and hard for instructions for doing that but can't find anything other than the settings for User Profile Disks under the Session Collection properties in Remote Desktop Services Management. But, remember that I said the RDS install was incomplete and botched?  The only choices I have in Server Manager under Remote Desktop Services are "Overview" and Servers," no "Session Collections."

This server does not have the RD Connection Broker or RD Session Host roles/features/services installed.  (Or RD Gateway, RD Virtualization Host, or RD Web Access.)  The only RDS features it has installed is Remote Desktop Licensing with actual licenses activated.  But there are no other RDS or terminal servers in the domain.  Go figure.

If I try to install the remaining Remote Desktop Services, either by selecting them in "Role-based or feature-based installation" or "Remote Desktop Services installation" the installation fails.  (The only thing I haven't tried along those lines is to try the install with the server in safe mode.)  So I'm prevented from getting to the Session Collection properties.

Does anyone have any guidance on how to get rid of the user profile disk settings in this instance?

My only other immediate option to get reliable backups is to move the folder where user profiles are stored (not the UPD VHDX files) from C:\Users to a drive that's not backed up.  Then presumably the local disk that's created from the VHDX mount would be "F:\Users\username" rather than "C:\Users\username" and wouldn't need the VSS snapshot at backup time.  However, moving the user profile directory has other side effects that I don't want (like patches and updates don't work).

Thanks,
Milo Brown

RDWEB question

I am using RemoteApp.

The apps that I publish to users are delivered in form of Virtual Application (APPV) to RDSHs.

Everything works perfect with most of the programs.

I have couple of apps that are delivered as virtual package and works fine on RDSH but because of there Jurassic Park nature are not available for publishing as RemoteApp. I posted the question here on forum... For more than a week no answer. And I understand... it is not a standard app. Even APPV and RemoteApp can coexist.

I have another idea... Want to ask before trying.

As mentioned my APPV app is running well on RDSH. What if I will not publish it as RemoteApp but will try to provide access by RDWeb means.

What do I need for enabling RDWEB (no gateway complexity). Just let say the user will be in Remote Desktop Group on RDSHs.

Would broker/s manage this properly RDWEB access? I think it may work because apps actually are running on RDSH...

Thanks.

Connection Broker role in RDS 2012

$

Hi Folks,

Here's my scenario. We have a bunch of RDS servers hosting a client app. The nature of the app doesn't allow it to be load balanced at all so each of the RDS servers have the gateway, broker, session host and web roles installed on it. now that the servers are getting a bit busier, i've noticed a sqlserver.exe process jumping up in CPU usage regularly. From what i've read, its the windows internal DB specifically related to the connection broker. i'd like to eliminate it from the equation somehow. is it possible to do this with 2012? i did remove the role on one of my new VM's and i was able to connect to it, but the management tools disappeared, then i rebooted....and i couldn't connect any longer.

thanks

NULL SID Security Log Event ID 4625 when attempting logon to 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Session Host

$

This is a new deployment of Server 2008 R2 in a newly created 08 R2 active directory on a newlyt installed 08 R2 RDSH server.

A new generic user is created in AD. That user can log on to the terminal server on the console just fine. But that user cannot logon via RDP. Furthermore, the domain admin credentials also cannot logon via RDP.

When either set of credentials is used, the logon attempt registered in the Windows Security Even Log as a denied attempt with Event ID 4625 reporting a NULL SID.

Troubleshooting: The RDSH has already been disjoined and rejoined to the domain. Also, curious note, there are three ways to save the user account on the RDSH server as a valid user account which has permissions to logon. The one Microsoft recommends is to open computer management and edit the remote desktop users group. When I the accounts here and click apply, they immediately dissapear. Secondly, I can open the computer properties and go to the remote tab. There I find the user accounts added using the previous method are enumerated but not displaying correctly. They show up with the RDSH server name and a question mark. The last way, is to open the Remote Desktop Session Configuration tool and edit the properties of the rdp connection and go to the security tab. This was the only place I could get a user to ‘stick’ but the logon attempts still show a NULL SID and access is denied.

I have scoured every bit of RDS documenation I can find with no luck.

Thanks,
Chris
