Pen input over RDS Remote App

$

We have a client-server application. We want to move it to RemoteApp. It is heavily reliant on handwriting using the Microsoft Ink framework.

The pen input for handwriting is very poor. We have tweaked many things but are not seeing any improvement that would make the software usable in this environment.

We setup everything with Server 2012. Windows 7/8 clients.

Any suggestions on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

RDS 2012 Remote App Active Window not coming to the front

We are working with RDS 2012 and publishing a remote App.  The App has many windows that open within it and a few windows into their session the active window stops coming to the front.  Since this window opens behind the old window the user thinks the app locks up.  If they click off to the side and then open the Remote App window back the windows does come to the front, but this cannot be a solution.

We have tried changing the HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ForegroundFlashCount to 3

and the HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ForegroundLockTimeout  to 0

Anybody else encountered this?

Add/Change User Assignment (-UserGroups) throught PowerShell

We're running RemoteApps on WS2012. Hundreds of .rdp RemoteApps were published using PowerShell.

When I want to add additional groups through User Assigment in the GUI I get: "Cannot bind argument to paramter 'VirtualPath' because it is an empty string".

How would I do this in PowerShell, if I use the below command it doesn't add the UserGroups, it replaces the group:

Set-RDRemoteApp -Alias "rdp1" -DisplayName "rdp1" -collectionname remoteapps -connectionbroker rds.domain.local -UserGroups ADGroup1

Allow multiple, concurrent RDP connections for particular users

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew how to control the restriction / allowance of multiple RDP sessions at the user level.

Trying to give certain users the capability of connecting concurrently, while restricting others to a single session (via GPO).  At the moment I am not having success, any advice would be appreciated.

RDS Deployment Port Change

Hi.

I installed RDS as quick setup (hosts, brokers and web access), changed 3389 port on

RD Session Host and RD Connection Broker. But RD Web Access site generate .rpd file with default port.

If I change it manually everything ok.

Is there a way to change the default RDP port in RDS deployment (Windows Server 2012)?

Server Manager - RDS/RDWeb Session Idle Time

$

I am running 3 Server 2012 RDS Servers hosting RDWeb application sessions. In the old Terminal Services Manager the Idle Times of the RD Session displayed correctly but in the new Server Manager RDS Tools they always display 0:00. Even after hitting the Refresh button. Is there a fix for this? Is there a setting I have missed?

Also, because of the physical locations of these servers and their clients I prefer to run each as a independent fully contained entity. In the old Terminal Services Manager you could add additional Terminal Servers and see those clients connected to it. I don't seem to be able to do this with the new Server Manager RDS Tools. Is there a way to do this?

After a couple of months of working with Server 2012 there are some things I really like about it, especially RDWeb; but I really miss the TS/RDS Management Tools of the Server 2003 - 2008R2 era. They gave a Systems Admin. a much better picture of what was going on during the business day and thus better information on how well things are working or not. At this time Server 2012 is step backwards in this regard. I hope MS will take a serious look at fully reinstating these tools.

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Remote Desktop Services

Hi Experts,

I was hoping someone would be able to provide me with some guidance.

We have recently purchased Windows Server 2012 Essentials as well as 5 RDP user CALS.

We do not have a domain or any other servers. We only require 5 people from various locations to be able to remotely log into the server and work on a program that is installed on it.

However, the setup and configuration of the Remote Desktop Services did not go as planned. After many attempts and various configuration settings, it still doesn't work.

What I am lead to believe is that the Essentials version of Server 2012 doesn't support being the RDP Gateway and License Server and Host. However, nowhere can I confirm this, I have searched many forums where people are experiencing the same problems, but nowhere can I find answers.

If there is anyone out there that might be able to shed some light and maybe point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Wynand.

How can I programatically configure Remote Desktop Services Session Host in Windows Server 2012 without a domain?

We build turn-key solutions for customers, and for years, we have been doing this. What I am looking for is a script-based method of performing the following actions:

  1. Install Remote Desktop Services Session Host
  2. Configure some "standard" settings: IdleTimeOut, Disconnected session behavior, temporary folders, encryption levels and such

My understanding, with w2k12, is all of this must be done to a Session Collection.  I have a PowerShell script that performs the install of Remote Desktop Services - Session Host, Connection Broker, and Web Access (Add-WindowsFeature RDS-RD-Server, RDS-Connection-Broker, RDS-Web-Access) while NOT on a domain, and now I am stuck trying to configure it.

When testing with this server on my production domain, I can get the following command to run: ($strFQDN is populated in the script)

New-RDSessionDeployment -ConnectionBroker $strFQDN -WebAccessServer $strFQDN -SessionHost $strFQDN

Once off of the domain (which is a requirement for customer server builds, not allowed to be on my domain, or any until it is at the customer site) I cannot get this command to function as expected. I am presented with the following output:

New-RDSessionDeployment : Validation failed for the "RD Connection Broker" parameter.
<ServerName> Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell remoting. Verify that you can
connect to the server.

The answer provided here (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/thread/cbffb2d4-ff9d-49ee-a9ce-a60db2262422) is simply a cop-out, as to why this was so poorly designed. Yes, more people are moving to the AD world. Why in the world could that be used a justification to just completely bend over your smaller customers? Or, customers that provide a value-add on your products? But, I digress...

Thoughts? How can I accomplish this VERY simple task WITHOUT putting this system on a Domain? (Well, very simple in Windows Server 2003/8/8R2)

Error adding RDS role services on a SQL 2012 host

$

Hello there,

I am not being able to add the RDS role services on my server which has SQL 2012 installed.

I had problems with SQL before, I had RDS installed and couldn't install SQL correctly, i was getting an error at the end, found no solution from MS online only workarounds that users found . Now I have an SQL and I cannot install RDS...

After adding RDS and the server restarts I get a pop-up window on server manager stating that it was not possible to add RDS role services. The only eventviewer error that I'm able to relate to this is:

I already checked the Microsoft technet library and there aren't references concerning SQL installations on hosts with RDS role services installed.

Any help will be great!

Server 2012 RDS Licensing Server Issues - Unable to discover licensing server

$

I am having issues getting the terminal servers in our district to leverage the existing RDS license server.  I have run through all the KB articles, blogs, etcthat I can find but nothing seems to assist with this issue.  Here's some background on an example setup:

RDS Host Server Name: NETREQUEST

RDS Licensing Server Name: KMS

The KMS server handles all of our KMS activation and has all of the 2012 Per-User CALs installed on it.  It is a Server 2012 installation and it is not a Domain Controller.

NETREQUEST is a basic 2012 Enterprise server with a single application installed.  During the grace period this server is working flawlessly other than the licensing issues.  When attempting to add the licensing server, KMS is never discovered. When manually adding the KMS server as a licensing server I receive the message "The license server specified is not valid. Verify the server name and specify a valid server name before saving the settings".  The same message is displayed whether I use the FQDN, NetBIOS name, or IP address of the KMS licensing server.

In the "Review Configuration" page in RDS Licensing Manager, everything is green and appears to be set up correctly.  I have attempted to change the discovery mode from Domain to Forest but it had no effect on the issue.

I verified the published data in Active Directory via ADSIEdit and ADDS.  TS-Enterprise-License-Server is set to the KMS server's FQDN.  In ADSIEdit, CN=TS-Enterprise-License-Server siteServer is also set to the KMS Server's LDAP path...

I have tried running the RDS services as both machine accounts as well as domain accounts with no change to the issue.  It is currently set up to run as Network Service as it was the default setting upon installation of the role.

These two servers are on the same subnet and VLAN.  Both are virtualized utilizing Microsoft Hyper-V within the same host server.  The Windows Firewall is turned off on both servers and network communication between the servers is perfect.  They both also utilize the same DNS servers and are of course joined to the same domain.

I have attempted to recreate another virtual machine to replace KMS and NETREQUEST to see if it was a faulty installation but this had no effect on the system...

I am running out of ideas and the resources online have been limited for the 2012 installations.  I am hoping the MS Community can assist me in coming up with a direction to go with my troubleshooting or have an answer that I may have missed.  I have other terminal servers that I need to build (and have built), but I cannot move forward until this licensing server is up and running like it should be.

If you need any other information, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank You!

Windows 2012 Workgroup Server Remote desktop Session host Performance issues (Pauses While Typing)

$

I have a Windows 2012 Standard server (Dell T620) running as a workgroup server for 8 people with some file shares and Remote desktop installed. Server specs are a single 6 Core Processor, 1.5TB of HD space RAID 10, 32GB of RAM. Users have access to Office 2013 and old access based utility billing software (Caselle) Qbooks 2013 for a single user, Adobe Reader and Acrobat, Chrome. Installed Desktop experience on the system and use Classic Shell so that users will not have to commit seppuku by trying to use metro on a non touch environment.

Users are reporting that throughout the day while they work on the system there are pauses in performance. They may last a few seconds, 30 seconds or a couple of minutes. For example the user could be typing a document in Word, or Outlook and there would be a pause and then the characters would come up at once.

Troubleshooting steps:

Looked at the logs for the times the users reported issues and I cannot see a smoking gun.

Server has the latest possible drivers and updates.

Performance meters: Did not notice any issues with network bandwidth or memory usage issues or CPU usage.

Made sure caching on controller was enabled to eliminate any possibility of performance issues when a user logs on or off the terminal session. That issue affected Windows 2008, but did not know if it applied to Windows 2012.

Tried disabling numerous Microsoft office maintenance Tasks that would occur during normal operating hours.

Disabled search indexing.

Checked Antivirus settings. We Use ESET File security that automatically creates exclusions for server operating systems and added our own exclusions as well. Disabled any advanced heuristics on ESET.

Verified that the licensing heartbeat task for Office executes correctly every morning at 12:00am. What I am seeing in the logs quite a bit is Security-SPP source events (on the Application Log) every time a user runs an office app. The office had been activated and working fine. In the licensing option for Remote desktop I see only 1 license assigned and 7 available.

The only other log of concern is the Event 17890 Source MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID We do not have SQL server installed on this machine so I assume it is the windows internal database. The error is a significant part of SQL server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration 7243 seconds. Working set: KB 90044, Committed KB: 359960. Memory Utilization 25%%. the figures may vary a bit. Some events are spread out over an hour others one after the other.

Updated the drivers on all the machines (some Windows XP SP3 running the latest terminal services client) and some Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit SP1.

Made sure that user log off their sessions at the end of the day.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a XA 6.5 Farm on W2K8R2 SP1 servers.  One of my new server builds is not creating the session properly.  This is a Windows issue, not a XA issue.  I recreated group membership for local users.  When launching any application the session runs through applying policies, gets to 'Preparing your desktop', then 'logging off'.  Neither of the below apply.  This occurs for users and admins.

Disable 3389 in TS/RD gateway so it only use 443

Hi, i have a rdweb server and its working 100%. I use HTTPS from the outside and have forwarded port 443 to the server and its working 100%, i dont forward any other ports at all, ONLY 443.  BUT if i in my router/firewall setup port 3389 to forward to another server or pc in my network the rdweb stops working. I can reach it with HTTPS://rdweb.domainname.no/rdweb and the published programs show correct, but if i start a program then it say that the ssl sertificate is incorect and it points to the server/pc that is on the forwarded 3389 port. As soon as i disable forwarding of 3389 it starts to work again.

I need a solution to disable/prevent rdweb rd-gateway to try to use 3389, i want it to only use 443 and dont try to use 3389 at all.

Is it possible?

RDWeb access single sing on

I have one RDS server 2008R2 with one application.

I want our users to go to the remoteapp icon without specifying their password.

If I set the RDWeb authentication to Windows authentication is still displays the form authentication. Certificates and all other actions like putting the site in the intranet zone and use the current username and password security settings are all taken care off.

Is it possible to achieve this goal?

Many thanks in advance!

Cannot use remote assistance on sessions other than console session with Session Based IP Virtualization

I've been implementing VIPs in a test RDS environment.

I've hit a few roadblocks along the way:

  1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259
  2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2619880

But now I have another issue, I would like to use the msra tool for supporting the staff. If I have an administrator logged onto the console session (so there is no Virtual IPs assigned yet) and no other sessions then I can shadow that session with msra.

However if I have just one more session then msra fails to connect to the server.

Anyone know how to fix this issue?

RDP Issues

Hi There all,I;ve been having a problem with RDP on a Windows 2012 Server. RDP worked when I first installed the OS and then after I installed all of the patches it stopped working. I have another server that exhibited the same issues, although once I promoted it to a domain controller, the problem went away, Unfortunately I can't have this other server running as a dc so I wondering if anyone else has run into this issue...I'm not using the full blown remote desktop services or terminal services...I just wanted to be able to rdp into the server for administration purposes.

RDS in Server 2012

I am installing 2 Server 2012 servers. 1 will be the DC, running File Share, DHCP, DNS, RDS Licensing.  The 2nd server will be the RDS server running SQL Server 2012 Standard, RDS Session Host, RD Gateway, and RD Connection Broker.  There will be 15 local users and 15 remote users.  All users will be accessing the SQL.  The remote users will have access to the shared folders on the DC as well.  My question is:  Is this the ideal configuration for what I described?  Do you forsee any issues?

Thanks!

Server 2012 RDS - Windows7 Virtual Desktops - activation?

$

Hello,

I have a machine running Server 2012 Standard with RDS enabled and Win7 Pooled Desktops.  The Virtual Desktops work fine, but noticed that they aren't activated.

What is the process for activation?

What key should I use?

Do I have to purchase a Win7 key for each Virtual Desktop?

My Boss spearheaded this type of setup and said that our RDS CALs should be enough for them to activate, but I'm not sure how that is suppose to happen.  I have 3 RDS CALs in installed in the RD Licensing server, but no change to activation status to the Pooled Desktops.  I have read of some people saying that we need a KMS server, but I would rather not go that router if I don't have to.  All the other physical machines use MAK keys provided by the OEM.

And forgive me if this is hard to understand - there are likely better words to use, but I'm new to Server 2012 & RDS & VDI, etc., so I hope you understand.

Thanks!

Server 2012 Won't install RD Session Host

Very frusterated trying to install RDS on a brand new installation of Server 2012 Standard.  A fairly simple and straightforward powershell command (after failing the GUI with the same results) of "Add-WindowsFeature –Name RDS-RD-Server –IncludeAllSubFeature -Reboot" goes through the preliminary steps and then restarts - gets to 64% of "configuring windows features, do not turn off" and does a second reboots touting the message "preparing to configure windows" and then counts to 64% again and the message "failure configuring windows updated reverting changes". pops up which it promptly does returning me to a machine that has RDP access for remote administration only.  I'm really not seeing anything related in the Application, System or Setup log files.  There is nothing special about this system.  It is not a DC nor does it have any other roles and services.  This was the first and only role I installed after a brand new setup and it failed.  It is, a virtual server running on a 2008R2 Hyper-V host but that shouldn't be a problem.  Any thoughts?
