RDS 2012 - Connection issues when selecting "This is a private Computer"

We recently cutover our corporate RDS system the Windows 2012 version and it was pretty smooth, only  few issue that where resolved quickly.  In the last 3 weeks I nave had 4 differnet users working from home on personal WIndows 7 system that they use to connect to their computer in the office using Windows 2012 RDS telling me that they can't connect any longer.  Doing some basic troubleshooting I discovered that if they select the option on the RDS Webaccess page "This is a private computer' they can't connect to their computer in the office.  If they select "This is a public or shared computer" It works fine.

Anyone seen this before???

Customer query Licensing query on Windows 2008 R2 Std edn. (3 Servers)

There would be 2 terminal servers are in same domain then can we apply/activate the RDP license for 10 user CALs on Domain Server and redirect these RDP licenses through the domain to share the 10 user license across these servers (the Database Server (T1)) & (the Application server (T2)).

Is it possible? Can you please suggest us the best licensing practice in this scenario.

Win Server 2008 R2, RDS w. Session broker: Mulitple session for specific users [Ticket#1002957]

$

Hello!

Currently we're using RDS without session broker. We have user accounts for specific purposes, i.e.  for users in the warehouse or general sales areas. These users are permitted to have multiple concurrent sessions. We imlemented this solution using tscon in a script. It checks for those users who only have permission to have one session, if there is a running one and connects automatically to it, if true.

Now we plan to build a RDS farm. During my tests, I had to find out, that you have to enable the single session mode on every RDS to have running sessions reconnect. Of course we do want to have this feature for all "normal" users. But we need those functional users as well.

Thus I'm lookin for a way to...

1. ...enable my script to find out whether there is a running session for those "normal" users within the whole farm and reconnect it (tscon only works within a single RDS), so I don't have to activate the single session mode and have those funtional users working like before.

OR

2. ...any other way to solve my problem... ;)

I hope I explained the situation thoroughly. Unfortunately I'm out of ideas and google didn't help either...

Best regards,

Thies

Application name does not update on taskbar when using RemoteApp

$

0

We have a problem with an applications' name not being updated when using RemoteApp. It's called Visma Global and when you run the program you can sign into different customers, which we organize by giving them numbers. This number is then added to the taskbar name of the program after you have logged in. After we switched over to using RemoteApp (We previously used Citrix XenApp) this number doesn't show up in the application name on the taskbar anymore.

Most of our users need to have several customers up at the same time, which they switch between periodically, and that means running several Visma Globals each connected to a different customer. Which works fine, except they can't see the difference between them when they hover over the Visma Global stack on the taskbar.

I tried it by using Remote Desktop (which our users do not use and do not want to use) and there the number does show up in the application name on the taskbar.

In programs like Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office etc. there is no issue with this. If you switch between for example Inbox and Contacts in Outlook the application name in the taskbar gets updated.

Another thing we've noticed is that we have one user that is still using Windows 7 without any service pack, and when he uses the application in RemoteApp the client number does show up in the name.

The rest of our users use mostly Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, a few use Windows 8 or 8.1

All our servers use Windows Server 2012 R2.

Has anyone encountered this before? Is there a fix or a workaround for it?

I am experiencing an issue connection to an RDS farm from another machine.  The client tries to connect then gets the generic error 'Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:' etc.

In the Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RDPClient/Operational log I get the following message when the client does not connect:

RemoteApp Randomly locks up, user unable to reconnect again

A certain user is experiencing problems with RemoteApp.

I'm using Windows 2012 Server and the first issue which occurred 1 week ago was that the session got into a disconnected state and could authentication again....error was "The task you are trying to do cant be completed because Remote Desktop Services is currently busy....".

Now the server should automatically kill disconnected sessions after 10 minutes and this has been working however in this instance the session wouldn't die,  even tried to kill the shell process for that user returned "Access is denied" (I've got full permissions) ....needed to reboot the server to resolve the user.

Second issue is that the User was still connected (wasn't really), I noticed the RemoteApp Shell was eating 10-20% CPU and again the user couldn't reconnect and couldn't kill the shell process and needed to reboot the server again.

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Relation between RD Connection broker and RD session host farm in 2012 R2

$

Good Day

I have configured standard RDS session based deployment recently on 2012 R2 servers
Everything is working as expected
The setup has TWO RD Session host, 1 Session Broker, one RD Web access and one RD Gateway
I have created 2 DNS records named Rdsfarm.domain.com for my RDS1 and RDS2 session host servers and if I connect to thisrdsfarm.domain.com with RDP from TS clients, i am able to connect to any one of TWO rds servers without any problem
However some part is not clear to me
I have not added rdsfarm.domain.com any where except my RD Gateway server RAP policy
Also I have added my RD Broker server in RAP allowed group above.
I don't see any config where this farm name is associated with my RD Broker server

I have tried to connect to RD broker server from client, but it didn't redirect me to RD session host servers
If I try to connect to my RDS servers with their FQDN , it gives me error that I must connect thru farm name

Can you please help me to understand relation between RD session host servers farm and RD broker server ?
Also I would like to know what exactly happens in background when user start RDP session by entering RDS farm name

Note that RDS farm name is generic DNS Host(A) record pointing to my both RD session host servers

I wanted to know is there any command or configuration I missed out as I don't see any config where Generic RD Session Host Farm name (DNS Host(A) record) is associated with my RD Broker server ?

Thanks

Best Regards

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

RemoteFX Poor Performance

Hello,

I am experiencing poor performance with a virtualized Windows 8.1 Enterprise. When I do not have the "RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter" added to the VM Windows 8.1 is more responsive (with simple things like moving windows around the desktop) but of course I don't get the benefits of RemoteFX.

I have a bench system setup to test RemoteFX in Server 2012R2.

Host Server:

  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Core i5-4570 (3.2Ghz)
  • 8GB RAM
  • SSD for VM's
  • nVidia GTX750 Ti (tested with other nVidia and ATI cards with the same result)

The VM:

  • Windows 8.1 Ent
  • 4 vCPU's
  • 4GB RAM (non dynamic)
  • RemoteFX 3D Video ADapter w/ 4 Monitors and 1920x1200 resolution

The RDP clients I have tested with are Windows 8.1 Enterprise and Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (RDP client says version 6.3.9600 and Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 supported). This is all tested on a Gig LAN and the quality of the connection says "the remote computer is excellent and UDP is enabled".

The event viewer on the 8.1 VM shows RemoteFX being used as does the performance counters on the host. Everything is slow and does not really run as expected other then Windows Media Player. Playing HD movie on Windows Media Player it looks great but if I open the same video in VLC it is choppy. Youtube is also choppy.

I have tried disabling the NIC offload in the adapter and in the registry as seems to be recommended in a few different forums without success.

It seems to me that Windows Media Redirection works however the RemoteFX Media Streaming is not kicking in when required or it's not working well.

Using Windows Media Player I am getting average encoding time of about 2ms and frames skipped/second - Insufficient Server Resources is average 18. The other frames skipped options are 0. The total CPU utilization on the server is about 6%. (subjectively quality seems a little less then with VLC but audio is in better sync)

Using VLC I am getting average encoding time of about 51ms and frames skipped/second - Insufficient Server Resources is average 0.1. The other frames skipped options are 0. The total CPU utilization on the server is about 25%.

On other higher resolution movies using VLC I get some average encoding time is almost 100ms.

I ran the Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 test the DirectX performance on the VM with RemoteFX. With the VM I got a score of 392 and it's pretty jerky. On the host, not using RDP, I got a score of 1108 and it was nice and smooth.

I assume that the perceived slowness is because of the Average Encoding Time. What can I do to improve this?

Thank you for your time,

Seamus

Local printing using remote desktop not working

Hello,

The situation is this: I've got a server running on a different network (using windows server 2003) and a host at home (running windows 8.1 x64), and I use both to edit work documents and print stuff at home. The printer used is an HP Deskjet F2480 Series.

Now in the past when this pc was running win 7 everything ran just fine. But I recently upgraded to win 8.1 and now the remote desktop connection is refusing to print stuff. The printer doens't even show up in the printer and scanners thing in the control panel.

I've tried multiple things, checked everything there is to check:

checked the printers box in "local devices and resources" of the remote desktop connection app

restarted the printer and remote desktop services on the local and remote pc

installed both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers on the local pc

added the LTP1 port to the printer so the remote server could use that port to print (connected to usb locally)

Now the farthest I've got is installing a dummy printer (print to file) using drivers from HP (no real driver for windows server so I used the ones for xp), and then reconnected to the server and the real printer showed up (as HP Deskjet f2400 Series on ....). So I thought problem solved but now he just plain refuses to actually print stuff. You can select him and print to him but then he gives an error in the print queue and just stays there, doing nothing.

Is there anyone with the same situation as me? Has anyone found out what the problem is?

Thanks in advance, hope I can fix this thing :)

I have an SBS 2011 (2008R2) server. RWA error when trying to connect to a remote computer or just accessing network shares in RWA.  All services on server show running, no problems.  But to fix this issue temporarily i have to restart the WWW publishing and remote desktop gateway services on the SBS server.  Anyone having this issue? it seems to be happening on 2 of my clients sbs servers, same OS.  Both servers are current with windows updates too.   The error when accessing the share folder says: An unexpected error occured, please try again, if the problem continues contact the person who manages your server.

Thank you in advance if anyone knows the permanent resolution.

How to track who done what when on a Windows 2012 R2 RDS Cluster

$

HI All

We have build a Windows 2012 R2 Cluster of 5 servers for a customer. However, settings keep randomly changing with regards to the config of the Connection Broker, Collections etc. We are convinced the customers admins who don't know anything about RDS are randomly messing with the config.

Are these changes logged somewhere in particular or can we enable some kind of auditing. Any assistance here would be a great help.

Thanks in advance.

Server often fails to communicate in NLB cluster

$
0
0

I'm a system administrator at a library in Holland. Our personnel uses thin clients which are making a remote desktop session to our session servers. We have two session servers (Windows 2008 R2) configured in a NLB cluster. Both servers are virtualisized. One in Hyper-V (RDS01) the other one in VMWare ESX (RDS03).

The NLB cluster is configured to work in unicast mode. Both servers in the NLB cluster have two network adapters. One for the NLB cluster and the other to use for Peer-to-Peer communication.

The problem we are having is that making a remote desktop session to our NLB cluster often fails (same error as trying to connect to a not existing IP or hostname). After some digging I found out that when I'm trying to view the cluster in NLB manager on RDS03 it often fails to "discover" RDS01. The other way around works just fine (from RDS01 to RDS03).

<I will add images of the NLB Manager on RDS01 and RDS03 as soon as my account is verified>

As you can see on the first picture I disabled the RDS03 in the NLB cluster. Only RDS01 is the active server in the NLB cluster. This solves the connection problem to the NLB cluster for now (so I assume the problem lies around the RDS03).

I learned the NLB Manager uses ICMP to "discover" other hosts in the cluster. So I decided to use a packet sniffer (Microsoft Network Monitoring) to inspect the packets being send out by the NLB Manager. And I noticed in the packet being send out by the RDS01 that it uses the IP address of the Peer-to-Peer adapter on the RDS03. In addition to that, the RDS03 sometimes uses the NLB cluster IP address of RDS01.

Below the packet details captured on the RDS01.

  Frame: Number = 2812, Captured Frame Length = 74, MediaType = ETHERNET

+ Ethernet: Etype = Internet IP (IPv4),DestinationAddress:[00-15-5D-63-97-23],SourceAddress:[00-15-5D-63-96-2B]

+ Ipv4: Src = 10.81.129.159, Dest = 10.81.129.161, Next Protocol = ICMP, Packet ID = 8406, Total IP Length = 60

+ Icmp: Echo Request Message, From 10.81.129.159 To 10.81.129.161

Next, the packet details captured on the RDS03. When the NLB Managers sends out this package the discovery fails.

  Frame: Number = 211, Captured Frame Length = 74, MediaType = ETHERNET

+ Ethernet: Etype = Internet IP (IPv4),DestinationAddress:[02-BF-0A-51-81-A5],SourceAddress:[00-15-5D-63-97-23]

+ Ipv4: Src = 10.81.129.161, Dest = 10.81.129.167, Next Protocol = ICMP, Packet ID = 11326, Total IP Length = 60

+ Icmp: Echo Request Message, From 10.81.129.161 To 10.81.129.167

As last the packet details captured on the RDS03. When the NLB Manager sends out this package the discovery is successful.

  Frame: Number = 2095, Captured Frame Length = 74, MediaType = ETHERNET

+ Ethernet: Etype = Internet IP (IPv4),DestinationAddress:[00-15-5D-63-96-2B],SourceAddress:[00-15-5D-63-97-23]

+ Ipv4: Src = 10.81.129.161, Dest = 10.81.129.159, Next Protocol = ICMP, Packet ID = 21180, Total IP Length = 60

+ Icmp: Echo Request Message, From 10.81.129.161 To 10.81.129.159

Below the IP configuration for the NLB cluster and its servers.

10.81.129.165 ... NLB cluster IP

10.81.129.167 ... NLB IP for RDS01

10.81.129.169 ... NLB IP for RDS03

10.81.129.159 ... IP RDS01 (second NIC for Peer-to-peer)

10.81.129.161 ... IP RDS03 (second NIC for Peer-to-peer)

Why is the RDS03 using the NLB cluster IP of RDS01? And why does it also uses the peer-to-peer IP of RDS01?What is causing this inconsistent behavior?

RDWeb Certificate Problem

I have a RDWeb host. I'm testing it as a user, when I click on the icon of an application it asks me for credentials and then this error is shown:

This computer can't verify the identity of the RD Gateway ...

and client can't connect. However I can connect to the host by mstsc.exe without any problem. Why this happened? Do I need to ask users to install server certificate on their devices? (Which isn't easy!)

And also I wanted users not to be asked for credentials twice.(once on the webpage and once when connecting) Does it need to certificates be installed on clients?

Hello experts:

My RDS Environment Have the following servers:

1- Two web access server ( RR DNS )---> virtual machines

2- Two Connection brokers servers (RR DNS) ---> Virtual machines

3- Two host session servers combined as a farm ---> Physical machines with 128 GB of RAM for each server

4- There is no gateway server.

5- The Active Directory is 2008 R2 while the RDS is 2012 R2

My problem is when the users try to access published application they faced a long time ( around 1 min ) to open the first app, the subsequent app open quickly, the problem on when launch the first app.

I tried the following in order to solve the problem with no luck:

- Edit the registry and add DisableTaskOffload with value =1.

- Disable the large send offload v2 IPv4 on all NIC's.

so the problem still exist and i didn't found any solution for it, any help or suggestion will highly appreciated.
